The game that never was lives on in this new gameplay clip.

New gameplay footage that apparently stems from a playable prototype version of the canceled Star Wars Battlefront III emerged today, providing a new look at the ill-fated game.

Posted on Reddit by a person says they aren't a big Star Wars fan but does "take interest in prototype games," the footage showcases a somewhat rough version of the much-discussed game that was in development at Free Radical Design, the UK studio eventually folded into Crytek.

According to the Reddit user, whose name is "ProtoFaggot" ("I want to apologize for my name, as it was the name given to me from 4chan to ensure they know who I am when I post this"), a build of the game is playable on Xbox 360 development kits. A link to the game build was removed by Reddit mods on the basis that it apparently constituted pirated copyright material (via Kotaku).

No Caption Provided

However, videos from the Battlefront III prototype have popped up online, showcasing combat on Hoth.

"I hope you all have a nice time with this," ProtoFaggot said. "Some may be mad at me but the story behind this build is a disaster and not releasing it will cause more issues than anything else.

"After a lot of work I managed to get my hands on Star Wars Battlefront III and wanted to share the infamous cancelled game that I'm sure many of you wanted to play. I know not everyone will get the chance to play this immediately, but over time I expect the modding community to be able to change that."

Despite numerous and detailed attestments to its existence and development, LucasArts never actually confirmed that Battlefront III was in fact in production. The game has long been the subject of much rumor, speculation, and head-butting.

This isn't the first footage we've seen of Battlefront III, but what's different here is that this looks to be the first time it's actually been playable.

EA launched a new Star Wars Battlefront game in November for PS4, Xbox One, and PC--it was a big, big hit. Multiple sequels are apparently also on the way.

The New Battlefront is pathetic. Free Radical had built in space combat with perfect transitions from land to space including being able to dock at space stations while Ea can barely give us 3 maps with no space combat or single player period. F*** you EA, Sincerely the real battlefront fans.

I like the new one really well in a lot of ways. Amazing graphics and capture of the Star Wars universe feel. Variety of game modes. No classes but card customization instead. The partner system is great too.

But I am hoping hoping hoping, pleading, begging, that at least one of the new game modes in season pass is a return of the classic instant action checkpoint capture that can be played in single player or in co-op. Overall, more single player & co-op vs. the computer would be marvelously welcomed. I'm not buying the pass until I find out.

I also hope they add some more fighter levels / game modes. Don't get me wrong I have a lot of fun shooting down TIEs in my X-Wing now but there really feels like the potential to even turn the gameplay functionality they have into a new Rouge Squadron. The training mission through the canyon (and the speeder bike mission) were a lot of fun. I'd love to play more levels like that. PLEASE! Thank you.

Looks more like battlefront than the new one, and while I like the new one, It isn't what it could've been.

@jcogopogo: If you like butchered for DLC games that offer very little for the full asking price and expect you to pay the cost of another new game the rest of the dlc.

@neoprime: I haven't played too much of it, maybe 8-10 hours. It has plenty of content for its asking price - I still haven't tried half of the game modes. Whenever I hear people get upset over it having no content I think that it's nonsence from a bunch of hate-train conformists. Of course it would have been better if the game had 32 maps instead of 16. But it would also be better if someone randomly showed up at my door and gave me a million bucks. I try to stay on the realistic side. It's a fun arcadey online shooter with impecable visual-audio presentation and old school-ish gunplay.

@factory_666: well good for you, but I and many others expect more for our money especially from a battlefront game, and the fact it has no single player campaign is reason enough to hate on it, that in itself is a lack of content. Some of us have higher standards.

@neoprime: Higher standards should still be guided by realistic expectations. Expecting a single player in a Battlefront game is, no personal offence, a bit stupid. Battlefront's campaigns were always a selection of Bot Matches with a poorly written over-arcing story thrown into the mix. It was a Junior Game Designer's project just so the game box gets the "Has full fledged single player campaign" line on it. The PSP game was the only one with a half-decent story to those Bot Matches paying tribute to the 501st legion.

I probably have a different view on games because I've been playing since early 90's and I can't be happier with the state of the industry - amazing selection of games and dirt-cheap prices for everything regardless of platform. So when I look at new B-front I see great Star Wars presentation, a standard amount of maps, fun selection of modes and an incredibly fun 1v1 VS mode reminiscent of PS1/N64 era of VS Couch-shooters.

@factory_666: You have been playing since the 90's yet you cant be happier with the industry today?!

First of all, what are you smoking because i want some!?

Second of all, the industry is an utter mess today with developers being forced to pump out rushed, incomplete products (like Battlefront) and publishers that butcher the artists visions (like EA) of these developers and would rather sell everyone an incomplete mess of a game, charge full price for it and then sell the rest off at a later date as DLC for the same price that original game cost to start with!

Yeah that's much better than what we got in the 90's!

How is that a healthy industry? We have games being released that are so broken it takes 3 or 4 months (sometimes longer) before they even become playable! We have travesty's like Battlefront that are clearly just a quick cash grab to take advantage of peoples nostalgia for Star Wars during the released of one of the biggest movies in history. Pretty much every game you buy today has been cut up into little pieces so the rest can be sold at a premium down the line as DLC, and everything, pretty much literally, requires a day one patch these days.

If you are a gamer from the 90's you'd know that none of this asinine bullshit used to happen, and that games mostly released bug free and with all the content on the disc and you only had to pay once for everything! Hell, even the old Battlefront games are proof of that as they had bigger maps, better games modes, more content (galactic conquest anyone?) and even the tiny PSP had better offerings when it came to Battlefront as they even had proper campaigns!

If you really think we are in a better industry today than 20 years ago, you are well and truly kidding yourself.

Having an opinion is one thing but the notion we are in a better place today is just downright insanity.

Oh and wanting appropriate content for a full price game, like varied game modes, maps, character classes (something else present in the old games but missing from this new POS) and some actual depth and a single player campaign is not an unrealistic expectation. And when a game from ten years ago offered all that but we cant get that these days that is a downright unacceptable.

BTW £40+ for a game is not dirt cheap. Even if you live in the states you have to pay around $60 or more for a new game, how is that dirt cheap? I have no issues with the price of games today (unless they lack content) but whatever way you look at it that is NOT dirt cheap, and it never has been. (unless you buy used or find a bargain)

@neoprime:

The abundance of AAA games, independent games, niche products, retro titles, fan-made mods and games, gaming genres represented by new releases, distribution types, publishing methods, marketplaces, and methods of playing games of previous generations through remakes or emulators. The industry is thriving, whether you look at it from the perspective of an Investor eyeing the entertainment industry as an avenue for placing capital, a young gamer just diving into it, or a gamer with experience. The industry has something for everyone. And Battlefront, which seems to have become a scape-goat for all "gamers" thinking of the "good ole' days", is not representative of the entire industry.

Seems you are set on your opinion that the opposite is the case, so I'd rather end this conversation, it seems fruitless. I just thought my Steam, PS4 and Humble Bundle libraries and it warmed my heart: so many titles that I love, from old-school masterpieces like Doom and Fallout to fantastic mods, like Black Mesa or Morrowind Overhaul, to indy gems like Hotline Miami, small team hits like Divinity and finally to amazing AAA titles of the recent years like Witcher 3 and GTA5. Games are great, I just wish I had more time to play them, especially games requiring more of a big time investment with a steep learning curve: Elite Dangerous, Assetto Corsa or even Monster Hunter series.

@factory_666: Whilst I do agree that there are some great games out there, many of them recent and that there is an abundance of quality titles old and new, there is also a deep rooted problem with the industry, from the release it now and patch it later attitude, to downright broken and unplayable releases ( arkham knight for PC being one of the worst) to the rampant butchering of games'content that by all rights should have been on the disc only to be held at ransom by publishers to be sold at a premium at a later date, to the downright scummy actions of certain publishers like Konami and Activision, to shady pre release/ pre order DLC practises, to the objectification of minorities and women in games etc etc. These aren't opinions but facts, this stuff is going on all the time and shouldn't be ignored, justified, or allowed and it continues to put a dark mark on the industry as a whole so its not all sunshine and rainbows like you seem to think, as unfortunate as that may be.

@neoprime: There is also a different side to that coin, which is "boy who cried wolf" - once a certain group starts complaining too much, the society just dismisses whatever they say, stops listening and legitimate whistle-blowing turns into yapping. Example: being up in arms about Micro Transactions in Dead Space 3 (especially the SP campaign) - hard to argue with. Complaining that there is paid DLC for games like Fallout, Witcher or Elder Scrolls Online - ridiculous to any objective observer, given that each of the games provides content significantly above average for the respective prices. Yet people still complain creating an unnecessary white noise that prevents legitimate concerns from being heard.

I am gona say this, Battlefront 3 is not a total trash or bad game. Its just so simple, there could be much more. Wasted potential, thats what the game is. If you are happy with it, go on. Its your money, not mine.

Edit: yup i did a mistake in name of the game. forever in shame : (

To all the people telling all the people that the new Battlefront is trash, get a life. I like it, other like it - and some hate it. No one is right, everyone has their own opinion. It's a fun game to some of us, so let it go for goodness sakes
