Legendary Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto, in addition to creating the Mario and Zelda franchises, also worked on the first Pokemon games as a producer. Now, Nintendo has released a nice video in which Miyamoto recalls his work on the series, shares some brief stories, and thanks fans for their continued support. Take a look:

The Pokemon series celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, but for Miyamoto, it goes back further than that. He worked with The Pokemon Company's Tsunekazu Ishihara for "about six years" before the release of the first games in 1996. And the reason for the lengthy development?

"The reason it took so long was because we were also working on EarthBound [released in 1994]," Miyamoto explains. "Once that was finished, we were able to move full speed ahead with Pokemon."

Miyamoto shares that his main contribution to the early Pokemon games was designing the system link feature that allowed players to battle their creatures on Game Boy systems using a link cable.

"Time flew by, and now there are Pokemon games in so many colors!" he says. "Twenty years. I almost can't believe it. Everyone, thank you for your support."

The exact 20th anniversary of the release of the first Pokemon games--Red and Green--was on February 27, 2016. The Pokemon Company and Nintendo have celebrated the milestone quite a lot so far, including with an ad at Super Bowl 50 and an afternoon soiree hosted by Drew Barrymore.

In other Pokemon news, the franchise's movie rights are reportedly in the midst of a bidding war. Meanwhile, the next mainline Pokemon games are Sun and Moon, coming to 3DS this year.

Ah yes, the man who's last great idea was in 2005, and he can't let it go. He is single handedly halting progression of just about everything at nintendo because he can't let go of motion controls.

I can't wait until this guy retires. He along with Nintendo have not made a great game since the N64.

Time to bring in some young blood instead of rehashing the same games with added gimmicks.

@stuff238: Of course, Nintendo needs new people and fresh ideas. Still, no good game since N64? That's bull.

@stuff238: Oh shut up and go back to playing your remastered PS3 games. If you've actually owned a Nintendo console since the N64, you won't be spewing such garbage. There's more amazing exclusives on Wii U than X1 and PS4 combined. Just because you choose to ignore them does not mean they're not great.

@xgalacticax: You gonna try and tell me every single major release from nintendo this gen hasn't been a remake, remaster, or half baked sequel? Three rehashed zelda games, no new metroid, 3D world is a 3D land rehash, half baked mario kart and smash sequels. They're not amazing exclusives unless you have nostalgia goggles surgically atrached to your face.

@stuff238: "I can't wait until this guy retires" so you want basicly the last person who came up with some of nintendos gratest games to be the death of nintendo?

@neowarrior793: That was 20 years ago, time to move on or collapse under the weight of the mistakes they continually made over the past decade.

@stuff238: Have you not heard of Splatoon? It's a brand new, completely unique game, and it came out less than a year ago. I think it fits most of your "criteria"...

At any rate, you should've at least stuck around through the GameCube era. Quite frankly, you've been missing out.

@Motobug321: How is it unique? You take paint and cover things. It's an arena mario sunshine. It's not as cool as every ten year old makes it sound. And the controls suck.

@obsidian_born:Every generation? I certainly wouldn't call NES or SNES horrible power wise, or N64 despite being behind PS, they were the early days of 3D graphics and all that. And Gamecube was above PS2 in specs, PS2 just got the traction and exclusives it needed despite actually being the weakest of those. Basically it's been just Wii and Wii U that've clearly been behind their generation

@obsidian_born: "But heir hardware is fucking horrible" Hardware as in what's inside the box, as in specs. That kind of indicates you're talking just about power in that case. I really don't understand what other things you mean when you say hardware is horrible

@Stebsis:

*derisive snort You quoted my spelling error? Talk about being pretentious.

Lets see... How can I explain this to you... Do you feel like you would rather be playing your Nintendo games on a PSP instead of a DS?? If yes, than you get my meaning. If no, than... I hate to break it to you... you are delusional.

For the record, I do not own any PSP system. I like Nintendo's handheld games a lot more, although I wish the DS was even close to as ergonomic, powerful, or as sexy as a PSP.

@obsidian_born: Spelling error? What the hell is going here :D There's no spelling error, you wrote that perfectly, unless you meant to type something else than "hardware is fucking horrible", and if you did, then I'm not a mind reader, I can only know what you've written :D

You said the hardware is horrible every gen, I pointed that not really. I still don't get the point you're trying to make, of course PSP performs better than DS and I'd like to play games on the best hardware possible, that's why I own a good PC instead of PS4 or X1. But DS hardware isn't horrible just because something is above it, take PS2 for example, best selling console ever but it was just weaker than GC or Xbox.

@Stebsis:

Hardware does not just refer to computer chips and electronic circuitry. i am talking about controllers, peripherals, etc.

For the most part I do not like any of the controllers or consoles Nintendo has put out since the GCN. They blow. The games are still out of this world but the hardware is hard to "put up with." The Wii U Gamepad is the worst product they have ever put out if you ask me.

@obsidian_born: If they actually wanted to make something innovative they could make a pokemon mmo. Choose your region and starter pokemon etc the battles would be like the ds games but decent graphics. For nostalgia sake the mmo should have an opening cinematic on start up with the song "I wanna be the very best like no one ever was" If I was in charge of nintendo then they would be printing even more money lol

Indeed! I was hoping for an MMO this year as a launch NX game... They could have went back to generation 1 and added a new region every year... But as always with Nintendo... it costs more money to make such a thing so why bother.

@obsidian_born: I've always wanted to them to make one since they had a 3rd region so they could include that region. The main problem with making such a MMO is that it more than likely would be more akin to World of Warcrafts current battle pet system. In all honesty it probably would. I kindof didn't care for that system as when they made that system they also made it easier to get the battle pets that were considered the rarest and worth alot of gold on the Auction House (the whelplings in particular). An MMO also takes alot of work and money and then consistent money to maintain if you haven't noticed with Runescape (yes its still around and its still strong and gets updates), WoW, FF14. Blizzard and Square Enix have the money to maintain the games and dedicate a good team to those things while also managing to keep making their other games and making them decent. Jagax the company behind Runescape though are a company that can only maintain Runescape. Unfortunately I think Nintendo, due to how they would treat a MMO, would be more akin to Runescape if they made a MMO.
