Watch First Star Wars Episode 8 Behind-the-Scenes Video, Featuring Rey and Luke

Del Toro and Dern join the cast.

Star Wars Episode 8 has officially started shooting. Lucasfilm have confirmed that production began today (February 15), and released a video that shows director Rian Johnson and stars Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill on set. Check it out below:

The company has also revealed that Benicio Del Toro and Jurassic Park star Laura Dern have joined the cast. Del Toro, seen most recently in drug thriller Sicario, mentioned last year that he might play a "villain" in the film, but this is the first official confirmation of his involvement. They are joined by newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

A statement from Lucasfilm read:

Rey took her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and will continue her epic journey with Finn, Poe, and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the continuing Star Wars saga, Star Wars: Episode VIII, which began principal photography at Pinewood Studios in London on February 15, 2016.

Last month it was announced that the release date of Episode 8 had moved back from May 2017 to December that year.

In an interview with the LA Times in December, Force Awakens writer Lawrence Kasdan suggested that Episode 8 and 9 might differ from what he and JJ Abrams did with their film. "These movies will all be so different," he said. "Rian Johnson is a friend of mine--he's going to make some weird thing.

"If you've seen Rian's work, you know it's not going be like anything that's ever been in Star Wars. You couldn't have three more different people than JJ, Rian, and Colin [Trevorrow, director of Episode 9]. Those movies will have the Star Wars saga as their basis, but everything else will be different."
