Ubisoft's open-world action game Watch Dogs is the fastest selling game the French publisher, which also is behind the Assassin's Creed and Far Cry franchises, has ever released. The company announced today that the game sold-through more copies in its first 24 hours of availability than any previous title in the history of Ubisoft.

This data is based on internal estimates for all platforms as of May 28. Ubisoft did not share a specific sales tally for Watch Dogs, but its initial success comes as little surprise, as Ubisoft said last week that the game was its second most preordered title of all time. Watch Dogs was also GameStop's most preordered next-generation game ever.

Ubisoft expects Watch Dogs to sell more than 6 million units throughout its lifetime. That's the same mark that 2007's original Assassin's Creed did.

"Watch Dogs is an amazing achievement and our teams should be proud that the creativity, innovation, and long hours they invested in making this game are paying off," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "It's great to see so many players enjoying the game, and it shows that Watch Dogs has cracked the code for developing a new blockbuster IP and a thoroughly new-gen experience."

After more than 5.5 years of development, Watch Dogs launched yesterday, May 27, for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC, with a Wii U version to follow. Its release didn't go off without a hitch, however, as some users reported login issues yesterday.

Watch Dogs' release this week is just the beginning for the game. Ubisoft plans to support the title with multiple expansion packs through the $20 Watch Dogs season pass. In addition, there has been talk of a sequel, which--if it ever happens--won't take nearly as long to develop, Ubisoft said in April.

Hype can be a very good thing, and this is obviously not one of those cases. Not that the game flopped, but the hype surrounding it made it seem like the best thing ever. That doesn't seem to be the case at all. I just hope someone learned the lesson that you can never believe everything you read or hear. I'm sure most did believe what they heard and read, but if at least one person realized this, then it's a win. Do not believe the hype.

beat the game it's borring, sides missions are all all the same nothing special. Story sound cool on hype video but actual story and game is mediocre. The shopping part is pathetic, one type of clothes with 1000000000000000000000000000 variations. Why do people even compare this to GTA V ? it's not even close what amount of stuffs you can do alone and not even counting online.

The game doesn't live up to the hype.

I wonder what were the devs doing since 5.5 years .. Maybe history will repeat and 2nd one will live up to the hype.

@Creed02 The only thing I can think of is cash grab. I just wonder how much Ubi gave to hype the crap out of Watch Dogs.

The magic of marketing really has brainwashed far too much of the gaming community that mediocrity is actually good. Maybe far too many have been conditioned that way.

Watch Dogs is NOT a bad game. Far from it.

But compared to what was promised, it isn't even close.

"A fun romp" doesn't cut it when you are promising what they did, and then delayed it by as long as they did, only to end up with still a half baked result of what was promised. The hype simply did not equal the result.

And even though Watch Dogs is good, there are games out there released YEARS prior that are better.

Add in the problems with UCan'tPlay, and I am not impressed.

It's simply a game that is fun while it lasts, and then is immediately forgotten. 8 is a fair, possibly even generous score.

It's a good enough game, but it isn't anything special. Considering the hype behind it, the gaming community should have expected something better.

And whatever potential was there will be diluted and destroyed by yearly releases.

And of course, this post will be mercilessly attacked by the mediocrity apologists and that's fine. I guess this is where the state of gaming is, and will remain until we demand better.

This game is so much fun. I have GTA V and IMO that game gets pretty boring very quickly because it's the same as the previous games, Watch Dogs is different. I mean what other game can you hack traffic lights causing multiple pile ups in the process?

Don't hate i'm just stating how it is from my own personal perspective.

Story alone is worth it (played on PC), didn't really like the driving mechanics though (wasn't the best).

Reviewers seem to be a little luke-warm about this game, but over the past two days I've been having so much fun playing it. I love the game so far. Admittedly it will take quite a bit longer to know how "good" I think the game is after completing much of it, but so far loving it.

Considering that colleges are letting out and schools are as well Im shocked more developers don't take advantage of the summer time frame; this fall a whole bunch of games are going to get drowned out.

I kind of wish these games could use real cars. Why skimp on the cars just because GTA always did. Break the mold and make an open world city game with actual cars to aid in immersion. NFS meets GTA.

The mix and matched body part cars in this game creep me out. It's like I am in some kind of sick twisted automotive nightmare where I am looking for a bad ass Lambo or a sweet Trans Am and all I keep finding are twisted abominations that kind of look like what I am after only it's all hacked up and married with 4 other cars. Bleh.

Over all I dig the game.

It's because unlike Forza or NFS, car companies don't want their cars depicted in robberies, hit-n-runs or any other crime you can think of. Common sense.

Ah... advertising, marketing... publicity is what makes this mediocre game sell so much. Don´t believe the hype around it.

Decent, not great, or goty material, or even innovative or anything new.

It's a decent romp. That's it.

"Watch Dogs Becomes Fastest Selling Game in Ubisoft's History"

Same was said about the Wii...all front end hoopla and hype...and we all know how that turned out. (Everyone I know who has one is letting it collect dust since launch)

Watch Dogs is just a half baked GTA clone with a hacker theme. Trust me when I say I'm not happy about it. I was sucked into the hype too. Waited a long time for this.

7.0

(I seriously hope I'm not saying the same thing about The Division next year.)

Honestly I am very surprised at ubisoft so far this gen. Black Flag and Watch Dogs are both very good quality titles with hours of fun to be had. I look forward to seeing what else they have in store for us, its nice to see a company which used to put out poor titles have a change of pace. I would like to see them make an rpg (like skyrim or something), I have a feeling they would pull it off after the amount of effort they put into watch dogs. I mean seriously, I was playing the mini games for hours when I only first put watch dogs in the drive and thinking to myself "I'm not even bored yet, loving every minute of this. And I have hardly even played the proper game". Well played ubisoft, keep up the good work.

<< LINK REMOVED >> totally agree, Ive played about 24 hours so far, and I'm only 17% through..... As far as RPG goes, there is The Crew and Far Cry 4, but a proper one would be nice too, it would be interesting to see them put they're own spin on it

<< LINK REMOVED >> I have been wondering for years why companies don't put more (quality) games out around this time. There is never any competition unlike the holiday seasons where some great games get buried under the mountain of hype.
