Watch Dogs 2 Won't Have Ubisoft's Formulaic Tower Climbing Mechanic

Watch Dogs 2 sounds like it will be a big departure from the Ubisoft formula.

Tower synchronization, a key gameplay element of Ubisoft's recent games, will not be part of Watch Dogs 2, creative director Jonathan Morin has revealed.

"It's not a game where you open your map and everything's there. There are no towers. You just explore the world," he said, speaking to Eurogamer.

Now Playing: Watch Dogs 2 Reactions at E3 2016

Introduced in Assassin's Creed, tower synchronizations involve players scaling large structures to get a lay of the land. From the very top, the player is able to see the surrounding area, which unlocks missions and landmarks on the map, allowing further progression through the game's story.

Variations of this design have been used in multiple Assassin's Creed and Far Cry titles since, as well as racing game The Crew and the first Watch Dogs.

Unlike in these games, progression in Watch Dogs 2 is not tied to moving through set locations and completing story missions within them. Instead, the game focuses on how many virtual followers protagonist Marcus Holloway, a vigilante and hacker, has accrued.

"Players start with a few followers in [hacking group] DedSec, but pretty soon you realise you're going to need more if you want to pull off big operations. So you start free-roaming," Morin explained.

"Every time you get followers, it's like you're unlocking the DedSec hivemind. You're also unlocking new knowledge, new operations, new co-op missions. And then organically you hit those end-game milestones."

Watch Dogs 2's release date has been confirmed as November 15. The game will be available on Xbox One, PC, and PS4. During E3 2016, Ubisoft announced all post-launch Watch Dogs 2 DLC will ship first on PlayStation 4 and will be exclusive for 30 days.

The tower thing has worn out its welcome for sure, although in watch dogs it didn't seem too contrived.

It sort of became a lazy design though, so I'm glad they didn't just go with it for WD2. There's plenty of ways to present and open up content in an open world that would be more organic.

it's totally because they figured we have caught on to their nonsense and after getting exposed for having no talent they decided to do something else instead

stick to your shitty scripted mp demos btw

So you're replacing one formulaic mechanic, with another; just one less well defined than go here, climb this, unlock that.......

First one was way over-hyped, didn't deliver and worst of all was extremely boring, started a bad year for Ubisoft doing that for several other games, glad to see at least ONE of their consistent designs not make it into the game, i hate tower climbing strictly due to them and how it makes all of their games feel the same regardless of franchise.

Still going to be incredibly skeptical and critical of WD2, maybe it'll be a surprise but, lately it Ubisoft doesn't inspire much optimism.

Oh thank god!

It's one of the things that made the Far Cry games seem so dull.

Good! That crap was annoying in far cry.

Wouldn't even make sense in this game anyways.

@asmoddeuss: I was once, old school rap and up to Eminem but modern rap has lost its soul and it's all the same thing with a slightly different beat/voice.

I have only played a few Ubisoft open world games, but I noticed this tower thing was a trend early on. Hopefully more of their open world efforts deviate away from this.

Despite that, i hope that will have a very good parkour system and able to climb buildings. That will be cool...

Until I see some semblance of a decent story. I will wait it out. Never got Watch Dogs for that same reason. Its now obvious I have not missed much. I might pick it(WD) up when it hits the $10 bargain bin.

@spartanx169x: Despite lackluster story, it really is a good game, if you like sneaking I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

@darksynced: I have been told by a few respected commenters here its pretty decent. I will get it. Its just a matter of when. If I go in with low expectations, then I'm more likely to enjoy the game. Did that with Far Cry 4 and was blown away at how good it is.

@spartanx169x: personally I thought it was OK but it lacked in varied missions, it was the same few things on repeat which is quite a common flaw in today's Ubisoft games.

@spartanx169x: Honestly I was hyped for the game and I wasn't let down, other than graphics it met all my expectations, but with low expectations I probably would've loved it.

Best decision from the franchise, never understood placing in artifical walls/FoW-type of design in a title like this, makes no sense. Hopefully this is the start of a seachange on their other franchises (AC, FC, ect..) as well.

In the ad that has been playing non-stop with the God-Awful music for WD2, that quadcopter lifting a 48U server rack makes me LOL. One of those things, fully loaded, weights well over a ton. Almost 1.5 if you throw some decent UPSes in them.

The more and more I hear about this game the more it sounds like Ubisoft is finally learning from their mistakes. Fingers crossed on this game being everything the first game should have been and more.

I'm not a fan of this hacking stuff and having my game screen full of waymarkers and other hud-markers, but i definitely appreciate getting rid of that old mechanic. it's had its time, it has been good fun at the beginning and was implemented in just slightly too many games and it's a good time for it to rip now.

Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Using it as a general rule to follow in all the big IP's from a publisher is probably not the best idea. Ubisoft used to be my favorite publisher back in original Xbox days and into the Xbox 360 days, but late in that cycle and into this one the annual releases and rehashed mechanics really killed it for me. I really wanted to like Watch Dogs, so I hope this iteration helps set them back on the right track.

It was also used in Mad Max and Shadow of Mordor because WB want to ape Ubisoft's open world design for some reason.

Finally... It was fun the first few assassins creeds because that was a game about climbing, but it actually made me sick of far cry 3 and I never finished it. It was so tedious climbing up those satellite towers.

in all honesty i never really thought the orginal watchdogs was a bad game, it simply wasn't that good. its negativity was more to do with its PR and how with was shown to be really good looking when it actually had a massive downgrade. aiden pearce was simply not likeable and the games had some simply flaws that never really did get fixed. tho i still think for an open world its was still fun and good to kill time with.

@neowarrior793: It was actually one of the best earlier titles on the platforms. It scratched the open world itch before GTA was ported. The story wasn't all that bad. And there were some really neat easter eggs (The snipe at Kinect being an NSA spy device being the cake-topper).

Watch Dogs 2 looks like Coca Cola got involved in the marketing and had to make it PC-multiculti. No thanks. I'll take the ever-depressed, monotone Mr. Pierce over this "Urban" fella' Mr. Holloway, who is designed from the ground up to be "cool" and "hip". Learn from Naughty Dog if you want to do characters right, Ubi.
