Watch Dogs 2 Won't Bring Back AR Minigames

It's not clear if Watch Dogs' Digital Trips will make it into the sequel, either.

It's already been announced that Watch Dogs 2 won't have Ubisoft's trademark tower climbing mechanic, but now game director Danny Belanger has also revealed the sequel won't feature the first game's AR minigames, either.

"AR games from Watch Dogs are not returning," Belanger told GamingBolt. "We are offering more city exploration. So as you're walking around the city, you'll open Nethack, and you'll discover operations and secrets that will unlock side quests if you want."

The AR games in Watch Dogs included NVZN and Cash Run. In NVZN, you'd shoot AR aliens with a blaster, while Cash Run had you running after coins and dodging red skulls. The Digital Trips were another set of minigames where the player would be thrown into one of four different worlds. However, it's not clear if these will appear in Watch Dogs 2. We've contacted Ubisoft to clarify this information.

We got the opportunity to play Watch Dogs 2 at E3. GameSpot's Scott Butterworth said, "I definitely encountered some silliness during my hands-on time--including some out-of-touch pandering to millennials and some laughable abuses of technology--but overall, Watch Dogs 2 looks promising. Its world is sunnier in more ways than one, its hacking appears to deliver on promises left unfulfilled by the original game, and honestly, the soundtrack so far is impeccable. With any luck, the final product will live up to its E3 demo when the full game launches this fall."

It was confirmed at E3 that Watch Dogs 2 would let you play through the game without killing anyone. It was also announced that PS4 players would get all the DLC first.

Watch Dogs 2 releases for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on November 15.

The digital trips were the best part of WD 1, but maybe that's because the rest of the game was so dull. They could really integrate it with the whole "collecting followers" thing. Like if you do really well in a Digital Trip you get followers as if you were livestreaming it for all the people watching Dedsec.

Good...those AR things were lame and I never did them. Had a great time with the rest of the game though, especially once I got to play as the dude who bashed skulls in with that giant pipe wrench.

I'm literally just now playing the first game and the AR stuff is pretty wonky. It's not bad, it's just sort of odd. I'm not a huge fan of the online trophies, either, but that's always been a thing with me. I don't mind putting in an effort myself, but I don't like relying on others.

@Flyin3lvl: The digital trips I felt differently about. They were cool. Mostly the NVZN thing and the coin jump were awkward.

@snugglebear: the others were awkward played them a couple of times but the spider had the tetris/ pac man addiction - just one more go. just one more. should head back to missions but one more.

online though I thought I could invade a friends game when they were playing but never found an option to do, thinking back I never joined into a friends game just got randoms. would have been cool to sneak up on a unsuspected friend to hack and hide.

@Flyin3lvl: I'd read that you could, but that friend hacks didn't count towards trophies or anything.

@snugglebear: not even worth invading a friends if it didn't count I just never had the option to even try.

As long as the drinking game won't make a return I will be satisfied. The only game I have pre-ordered so far this year :(

The Digital Trips were among the best parts of Watch Dogs 1, but I suppose that's more telling of just how bad the game itself was. If this one's better, maybe it won't need fancy minigames to distract you from it.

@slappy54: They said the entire game can be played non-lethally so I'm thinking lethal options are definitely available.

Good thing. AR mini games felt really out of place with Watchdogs and were arguably the worst part of the game.

The AR games felt really out of place in the first game due to the dark theme so it's interesting that they ditched them this time even though it's a lighter tone. They weren't much fun anyway so it's no great loss. The digital trips were kind of cool though, I hope there's still something like that in WD2.

Everything I hear about this game just makes me more and more confident that the devs are taking this game in the right direction from the disappointment of the original.

@phoenix1289: Well it's kinda like Assassin's Creed. They had a great idea originally but didn't quite deliver on its full potential until the revolutionary sequel beloved by so many. Now that they will seemingly alternate each year between a Watchdogs and Assassin's Creed release, (an idea I've been floating to my Ubisoft employed brother for a while but shouldn't take credit for), it's likely the quality of both franchises will be held at a higher standard than it was when released yearly with roughly 3 such games being developed simultaneously.

@phoenix1289: to me it just sounds like the same crap all over again just minus some elements....

for Ubi Style open world games if I was told I must buy one of em at least I'd honestly get Wildlands basically cus it offers more than Watch Dogs will offer.....tactical action from the looks of it, vehicles, open mission design, aircraft and armored vehicles....all WD has over Wildlands is hacking and that frankly only goes so far....

but if I'm completely honest Ubi's games over the last decade have gotten worse and worse and I'm at the point of writing em off as a forgettable publisher.....they join the ranks of Crapcom, Fuckonami & hActivision.....

@darthrevenx: have you read about wildlands? It had a very disappointing showing at e3, Gamespot's hands on sounded shocking to say the least. It has a later release so it may develop well, but as of now it's not promising.

WD2 on the other hand was the surprise of show and many critics and players who got hands on confirm that it's everything the first should have been.

@Crypt_mx: yeah Wildlands does basically look meh especially taking into account the Tom Clancy Ghost Recon name but just the third person open world games like I said if I was forced to choose 1 of Ubi's games Wildlands would be it cus it offers more....but all of their open world games are meh at this point....

i'd rather play GTA and frankly I'm done with that IP as well....i'm more into GTA what it was in gen 6 [GTA3-SA], currently Fallout 4 fills my open world needs.....No Man's Sky looks appealing and that Saints Row successor looks kinda cool....can't remember the name of it...

Watch Dogs looked just as underwhelming as the first game, sorry but the trailers gives me no hope for that game, it just looks like a even more boring modern day setting of Assassins Creed....no spanks.....

For me Ubisoft has become a company to avoid all their games cus everything they make is the same.....too formulaic....don't like Assassins? try Watch Dogs, hate WD? try Wildlands, Wildlands looks lame? try Far Cry bleah, hate Far Cry? try The Crew, hate the crew? try The division, hate Division try Splinter Cell Patriotic Bulls***t....all their games are the same....try one you've tried all of em.....

@Crypt_mx: also other dev's implement different elements to their games, go back to the 90's and look at id Software and their partners.....

id made Wolfenstein 3D a revolution then Doom the standard bearer for FPS of the era, their partners at the same time made Heretic, Hexen, Rise Of The Triad, Doom revolutionized FPS again with Quake, Quake 2 and Quake 3....

Wolf 3D was WWII a Jewish American soldier breaking out of a prison and fighting the horrors of a techno Nazi army

Doom was a lone soldier facing the hordes of hell and the perfection of the FPS

Quake was kinda a similar theme to Doom but different enough to be it's own thing, Q2 was more unique and more intricate level design and somewhat forward thinking tech in how 3D cards were used, Q3A was a great arena shooter and required a 3d card first game too as well and it still sold well and the disc version of the game was still being played well into 2007 last time I checked....originally it released in 1999 I might mention Q3 was more popular than Q4.....

Id was a dev who may have made shooters but each of their games had a reason to be there....each offered more of the same or a whole new experience Doom 2 was the same Doom as the first one just a little harder, each Quake was the same difficulty but all were completely unique....Ubi makes the same games across genre's even....stealth, tactical, open world all are the same thing.....

@logangta5: Sorry, Quake Live sucks ass and it's not the same thing.....

Quake 3 was for everyone, Quake live it purely for "pro gamers" and the tournament scene.....not the wider PC market....Quake 3 supported mods and was better for it, Live doesn't, it's static and boring.....

tell me, would you want to play static Fallout 3 no expansions and no mods??? of course you wouldn't, that's what Quake Live is.....it was fun in 1999 for a bit and when mods started rolling out it made the game better....

@darthrevenx: The only mod i liked was freeze tag, at the moment, like 15 years ago, I aways played the core game: duel, ffa, and capture. Quake Live it's alright for me I think.

@logangta5: I ran one of like 3 mods and also ran custom skins for my character and weapons, i ran a stormtrooper with Kaneda's beam cannon for the railgun, Doom's plasma rifle skin, RPG7 for the rocket launcher I can't remember the rest cus I exclusively used the railgun.....

the actual mods though I can't remember which ones I wet with, one of em was similar to Weapons Of Destruction fro Quake 2 and I think one was Runes....where each rune gave some powerup a throwback to original Quake...
