Ubisoft's open-world action game Watch Dogs has now shipped more than 9 million copies (up from 8 million in July) since its release in May for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. The Wii U version of Watch Dogs will be released on November 18.

Two-thirds of total Watch Dogs sales came from the Xbox One, PS4, and PC versions, Ubisoft said.

The French publisher announced the new sales milestone today as part of an earnings report for the six-month period ended September 30. During the period, Ubisoft posted sales of €484.2 million ($611.3 million), up 65.1 percent compared to the €293.3 million ($369.9 million) the company posted in net sales this period last year.

Ubisoft posted a profit of €17.1 million ($21.6 million), a huge improvement over the loss of €62.1 million ($78.4 million) last year.

During the six-month period, Ubisoft saw a 90.4 percent spike in digital revenue, which totaled €134.7 million ($169.8 million), or 27.8 percent of total sales for the term. Success in this area was driven by Ubisoft's digital distribution, mobile operations, and sales of DLC and other in-game items.

Also contributing to Ubisoft's bottom line during the period was back catalog sales of €113.7 million ($143.4 million), fueled by Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Far Cry 3, and Rayman Legends.

For the three-month quarter ended September 30, Ubisoft posted revenue of €124.1 million ($156.7 million), which is down 42.9 percent compared to €217.7 million ($274.6 million) a year ago.

"The very strong momentum we saw at the beginning of the fiscal year carried on into the second quarter and enabled us to once again exceed our performance expectations," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said in a statement. "Ubisoft continued to capitalize on the popularity of new consoles, the successful launch of Watch Dogs, the quality of its back catalog, and the considerable growth of the digital segment. Consequently, our operating income and cash flows improved significantly during the period."

Ubisoft also confirmed today that 2012's Far Cry 3 has shipped 10 million units to date, 6 million of which came in the first year. The publisher said it expects Far Cry 4 to sell more than 6 million in the first year. As for racing game, The Crew, Ubisoft said it is expecting it to sell 2 million units.

Looking ahead, Ubisoft has a number of marquee titles for this holiday and beyond, including Assassin's Creed Unity, Assassin's Creed Rogue, Far Cry 4, and The Crew. Just last week, the company launched the latest entry in another one of its powerhouse franchises, Just Dance 2015.

Got a hell of a lot of play out of the game but I have to admit that it's redundant game-play. Everything comes down to a drive and shootout. Just different locales. God I miss Mass Effect.

Not a bad game; Just not great either. Had a lot to live up to with GTA 5 as it's competition.

Good game. Most over hyped thing I have ever seen, but I never fell for it anyway. Just picked it up last week for cheap. Good time waster until dragon age comes out.

Unbelievable that a game like Watchdogs did so well. Unoriginal, boring, and repetitive....but apparently that's what the public likes.

I was one of the 9 million... Not disappointed to be as well.. Watch Dogs was a solid game thats only downfall was its marketing and original E3 demo... I, for one, can't wait to see where Ubisoft takes this franchise in Watch Dogs 2

Did you get 100s of friend requests thanks to that game? I did but never did find out as to why that was. A friend of mine said the same thing to me just last week and none of us know why this is.

I have a feeling it has something to do with the Mayor Hotspot thing but can't be sure.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> No, I didn't experience such a thing with this game... Had it in a few others, but they were online centric... That's rather strange though?

Yes I was Mayor of a few hotspots for the duration of my time with the game but I wasn't trying to be, I just used to leave $1000s for other players to pick up and for around two weeks I went from 30 friends to 100, back to 50 after I deleted some and it went back to 100 in just a few days.

It was odd and I did ask people here if they had a similar experience and only one said yes but now my friend is playing and she is getting the same thing.

I tried asking what the deal was with some of the new friends but sadly no one could answer me or if they did it was in Russian or Portuguese. lol.

Oh well, thanks for answering. I was just curious if you knew.

Watchdogs was such a disappointment.

Actually that seems to be the theme with a lot of games in 2014.

In other news... I just heard what the games with gold for the Xboxes in Novemeber are...

Viva Pinata and Red Faction: Guerrila for the 360 and Volgarr the Viking on the ONE.

Keep calm now.

I had a feeling since this was not announced sooner that it was going to be a poor effort for November.

Ah right, that would make sense. It was most likely my friend that owned it on the original Master System, which I never owned. I thought it sounded familiar. :)

I never had a C64 either, I had an Amstrad CPC-464c for a computer, I was therefore deprived of games during that era.

I didn't even realise there was an Amstrad version... Well as far as I can remember.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I watched the vids and the amstrad has much better color palette than the C64 but was very poor with the sound.
You could help me probably with this:
I know there is/was a Schneider CPC...what is the difference between it and Amstrad?

Now that's a weird coincidence because I was asked that before but I didn't have a good answer as to what it was that linked them. So I just looked it up on Wikipedia.

Here is what it said.

"In order to market its computers in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland where Amstrad did not have any distribution structures, Amstrad entered a partnership with Schneider Rundfunkwerke AG, a German company that - very much like Amstrad itself - was previously only known for value-priced audio products.

In 1984, Schneider's Schneider Computer Division daughter company was created specifically for the task, and the complete Amstrad CPC line-up was branded and sold as Schneider CPC."

Just as well I did look this up, because I didn't know this.

Never played it much, was it any good? It was a Sega Megadrive (Genesis) game wasn't it?

I was more of a Nintendo geek around then, but did have a Sega.

Avatar image for sladakrobot

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its an original Taito arcade game and was released for the Master System.
I dont recall being it on the Genesis or any Nintendo plattform later.
I played it back then on my C64 and loved it(a part comes from the great C64 soundtrack).
I grew up with such plattform games and nowadays there arent any released and if,they turn out to be mediocre.
Hope Volgarr does some things right but i already know i will miss the sprites.
No love for sprites today :-(

So only a third of the sales are from last gen consoles. With this holiday seasons deals on current gen and the dwindling interest in last gen, it would be great if devs focused strictly on current gen development from now on. I can't help but think that the bugs and issues with games are the result of too many platforms getting attention and not enough focus on the ones that matter.

Avatar image for punksterdaddy
punksterdaddy

<< LINK REMOVED >>

That doesn't mean the sales on last gen are dwindling (although they likely are) it just means that on the new gen there is not a lot of choice in games.

People on the X360 and PS3 had many other games to choose from and most likely waited for the price to drop, just as I did.

If you spent money on a new console, then you'll be wanting games to play and Watchdogs was there to fill that gaping void.

Bought 2 copies by mistake, hated it. The hatred is more to do with my boredom of the ubisoft formula, than the game.

But still really average game, the hacking was a useless gimmick, driving was terrible, story was forgettable etc. etc. it was only really the open mission structure that made it stand out a bit. 9 million, I'm guessing that a lot of used copies on shelfs.

Say what you want about Ubisoft, but their games sell really well - just like Activision. Ubisoft is the new Activision or Activision's DRM-loving brother.
