EA has officially announced the next game in the Battlefield series: Battlefield 1.

The game is set during World War I and features new melee weapons, horses, and biplanes. The trailer shows a rapid series of encounters with tanks, flamethrowers, battleships, and artillery, as well as battles in trenches. We also get to see the soldier seen in yesterday's teaser, and it turns out the shadow being cast across his face was from an enormous zeppelin flying overhead.

Now Playing: Battlefield 1 - Announcement Trailer

Afterward, the developers discussed various aspects of the game, including a persistent squad system that makes it easier to jump between servers with a group of players. Destruction remains a part of the game, though specifics weren't shared. Weapon customization is also still present--and with a new twist--but again there weren't many details offered.

The name and setting were both leaked earlier today, first with an Xbox One dashboard ad and then with photos of retail posters.

If you're an EA or Origin Access member, you'll be able to play the game on October 18. The full release will then follow on October 21, though preordering a deluxe version of the game will also allow you to play on October 18. There's also a way to get early access to a beta coming later this year.

Those who preorder also get the Hellfighter pack, which includes items inspired by the Harlem Hellfighters, as well as seven days of early access to a new map coming "later in 2016," according to an Xbox Store listing.

Original Story: At 1 PM PST/9 PM GMT, EA will offer "a first look at the future of Battlefield," revealing the latest entry in DICE's popular first-person shooter franchise. The event will be streamed and you can watch the entire thing here.

Before this, however, viewers will be treated to a lengthy history lesson on the series. Developers from DICE will run through Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2142, Battlefield 3, Battlefield Hardline, and Battlefield 4, providing insider insight on each title's development, release, and reception.

There's been much speculation as to what the new game could be, with many hoping that it will return to World War II to differentiate itself from the many modern/future warfare currently available and on the way. Of course, others are hoping to see a new futuristic setting, no doubt due to nostalgia for Battlefield 2142.

Although EA hasn't said much about the game, a nine-second video teaser released on May 5 has provided some clues. It features the face of a soldier as a large shadow is cast over it. He stares up at the source, but it's difficult to make out exactly what it is. The best guess is a some sort of large aircraft.

It was also previously teased that the Battlefield series will return to a "military-style game" and is already shaping up to be a "fun, new Battlefield." Either way, we'll know what it is soon enough.

As always GameSpot will be on hand to offer the latest updates on the new Battlefield as an when they're revealed.
