Paramount has released the first trailer for its new sci-fi movie Arrival. In it, we see Oscar-nominee Amy Adams making contact with aliens in an attempt to save the world.

Adams plays an expert linguist named Louise Banks. When mysterious alien spacecrafts touch down all across the planet, Banks is brought on by the US government to make first contact. Not every government agrees with how to handle the situation (spacecrafts landed on the various continents), and in the events of the film, "mankind teeters on the verge of global war."

Arrival also stars Oscar-nominee Jeremy Renner and Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker. It was directed by Sicario's Denis Villeneuve, who is also directing 2017's new Blade Runner film starring Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling.

The movie opens on November 11. It is based on Ted Chiang's 1998 novella Story of Your Life.

Renner, who plays physicist Ian Donnelly in Arrival, told USA Today that he was excited to take on a role that is unlike anything he'd done before. "I haven't played a smart, nerdy guy," he said. "I thought there was a great challenge in that."

Regarding the look of Arrival's aliens, Renner said they're "not goofy creatures with guns who are going to kill us." Adams teased that they will look "different than what you would have thought."
