Watch 2020's Ghostbusters Afterlife Trailer Bring Strange Things To A Small Town
Paul Rudd and Finn Wolfhard get ready to bust ghosts in 2020.
The first trailer for Ghostbusters: Afterlife is here. The new movie in the supernatural comedy series releases in July 2020--it's a sequel to the original '80s films and its cast is headlined by Paul Rudd (Ant-Man) and Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). You can watch the trailer below.
The film takes the action from New York to rural Oklahoma. Trevor (Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Captain Marvel's McKenna Grace) are the grandkids of one of the original team, who are forced to move to an old farm with their mom. But inevitably, there's something weird going on--strange underground rumblings as if something is trying to burst out of the earth. With the help of a friendly Ghostbuster-obsessed teacher, Mr. Grooberson (Rudd), Trevor and Phoebe discover their link to the Ghostbusters and find some very familiar equipment to help them fight whatever spooky things are lurking below. The Stranger Things vibes are strong here--and not just in the casting of Wolfhard--but it still looks like great fun.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife also stars Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) and is directed by Jason Reitman, the son of Ivan Reitman, who helmed the first 1984 movie. Afterlife is expected to hit theatres on July 8, 2020.
The trailer doesn't feature any of the original cast, but Bill Murray, Dan Akyroyd, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver, and Annie Potts are all set to appear. And while the trailer doesn't reveal which Ghostbuster is Trevor and Phoebe's grandad, there's a strong suggestion that it's Egon Spengler, played by the late Harold Ramis.
The one movie that Ghostbusters: Afterlife has nothing to do with is Paul Feig's 2016 female-led reboot, which was a commercial failure. In January, star Leslie Jones--who appeared in the reboot alongside Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Kate McKinnon--described the decision not to continue with an all-female Ghostbusters crew as "like something Trump would do."
