Wasteland 2, Sequel to Fallout's Predecessor, Launches on September 19 After 26 Years

It's taken more than a quarter of a century, but we'll soon be playing the sequel to Wasteland.

Sequels in gaming are sometimes referred to as "long-awaited" when it's only been a few years' wait, but here's one example where that really applies: Wasteland 2, the sequel to 1988's Wasteland, will arrive on PC on September 19, its developer announced today.

Brian Fargo, founder of developer InXile Entertainment, announced the date on Twitter today, writing, "Official Wasteland 2 release date... September 19th! The 20+ year wait is soon over." Saying "20+" undersells just how long it's been, as 2014 marks the 26-year anniversary of the original Wasteland's release.

Wasteland 2, which fans successfully funded through Kickstarter in 2012 to the tune of almost $3 million, was originally scheduled to launch this month before it had to be pushed back until September. The RPG has been playable in Steam Early Access for quite some time as InXile updated it with new content, improvements, and bug fixes.

Like Wasteland 2, the original Wasteland was directed by Fargo, who, at the time, worked for Interplay Entertainment. When it was released in 1997, the original Fallout--developed by Fargo and Interplay--was effectively a spiritual successor to Wasteland. Fallout has gone on to become a hugely successful series, thanks in large part to Bethesda's Fallout 3 and Obsidian's Fallout: New Vegas, while Wasteland went silent for the better part of two decades.

For more on Wasteland 2, check out our review of the Early Access version from earlier this year, as well as the video above for a discussion with designer Chris Avellone.

@HAZCHEM88 Wasteland 1 was released in 1988 and is the "father" of Fallout. Fallout wouldn't of have existed if not for Wasteland so yes..it's true.

Same goes for King's Bounty being the father of Heroes of Might and Magic.

@grenadehh @unreal849 "Nobody cares or wants turn-based isometric RPG's." A bunch of people in the industry and media.

Divinity:OS comes out, it's turn-based, it's isometric and it's a RPG.

Guess what, it's on the best sold list of steam since launch.

So talk for yourself.

@nodbgp Never said no one wanted it. Just said they're 16 years late for the care train. Only hardcore interplay/black isle fans are going to buy it and only then for nostalgia. Not to mention I own all the divinity games and don't even care.

Idk I think Failbarblo 3 ruined isometrics for me permanently.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'll admit I mainly backed it due to the nostalgia factor. I'm actually not super excited to play it, and I didn't even try the early access. Unfortunately I must also admit that while I loved old school RPGs back in those days, these days I often lack the patience for turn based combat. I guess we'll see if it keeps my interest.

@grenadehh @nodbgp I plan on getting it, why the hell not right? And I'm not just about the whole nostalgia value not lasting long. There's fansites all over the place dedicated too older games. The Pre EA Command & Conquer, Jagged Alliance (Bears Den), X-COM(Strategy Core), Heroes of Might & Magic (Celestial Heavens). Oh and can't forget No Mutants Allowed with Fallout.

I played Wasteland, but didn't managed to finish it. Fallout 1 & 2 on the other hand I have finished at least 3 times and I don't think that Fallout 3 had anything to do with that. I also don't think that many people have played 1 or 2 after playing Fallout 3, so for the: "successful series, thanks in large part to Bethesda's << LINK REMOVED >>" I strongly disagree.

All in all I hope for the greates story of all times.in Westland 2.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Furthermore if you try to play Fallout 1 and 2 after 3, you'll quit, because the gameplay is drastically different and downright archaic.

@nodbgp @grenadehh @vanvir1 Point of view. After playing FO 1 and 2 and 3 the ngoing back to FO1, I found running from mole rats and rad scorpions pathetic when in one game I could just kill their asses and be back to the story.

<< LINK REMOVED >> fallout 3 was kind of a glorified mod, and a lucky strike for Bethesda. I've tried time and time again to get into the game but alas here I am typing about it rather slavishly.

Game has nothing to do with Fallout series, but let's include it headline anyway for those precious clicks. Welcome to GameSpot. :D

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah normally I would agree, as gamespot is notorious for spectacle journalism but this headline was as clear as day to those who gamed back in those days. When you see wasteland and fallout together, you know it is going to be good. And like Vandal Hearts, it is hard to not mention Final Fantasy tactics. Or Forza and the name Gran Tourismo.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Brian Fargo made Wasteland. Brian Fargo also made Fallout. Brian Fargo is nearly finished making Wasteland 2.

The bit in the middle. Y'see it? That's important.

@Saidrex Actually it does considering one of the lead designers of Wasteland was the executive producer of Fallout.

But anyone who started gaming before 2000 would know that.

@MrFreehuggs Gaming on things that aren't PC != gaming. I kid I kid but seriously why would you not be gaming on PC in the 90s. Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Diablo, Sim City, Wing Commander, Descent, Free Space, Theme Park, Myst, Myth, Lost Vikings, Starcraft, etc. etc that's where all the games were with a few console exceptions.

Didn't need a GPU, because there wasn't one, or anything.

@Saidrex What on earth are you talking about?? This is the series that fallout was based on. Do some research before saying such nonsense. How does this have nothing to do with the fallout series when fallout got its ideas and inspiration from wasteland?
