Warframe Dev Set to Be Acquired by MMO Company Perfect World and a Chicken Meat Supplier

Some players are already protesting the acquisition.

Warframe developer Digital Extremes is set to be acquired by massively multiplayer online games company Perfect World and Sumpo, a chicken meat products supplier.

According to a document from Sumpo, the companies entered a "non-binding term sheet" on June 30, 2014, and are now "conducting due diligence investigations over the affairs of Digital Extremes." Basically, Sumpo and Perfect World are finalizing the deal and Digital Extremes agreed not to solicit other offers in the meantime.

Some Warframe players are already objecting to the acquisition, fearing that Perfect World's involvement will have a negative impact on how the game is monetized. Users on the /r/Warframe subreddit are trying to organize a temporary boycott of the game, and at the time of writing a Change.org petition had already gathered 4,700 signatures urging Digital Extremes not to sell to Perfect World.

"You may have read something about the business development side of Digital Extremes and it may have you concerned," Digital Extremes Video Game Director Steve Sinclair said on the game's forums. "For legal reasons, we can't disclose specifics but if you know the history of Warframe you'd know that we are intent on having Warframe's design remain in the hands of Digital Extremes. Yes, opportunities will arise for us but the game itself is and will remain a labor of love."

Currently free-to-play on PC and PlayStation 4, Warframe is set to launch on Xbox One later this year.

A chicken meat products supplier? So... will F2P in their case mean Free to Poultry? Mountain Dew and Doritos is nothing compared to chicken meat.

I can see it now... Lock boxes dropping everywhere in defense and survival missions... It doesn't take a genious to know that this is going to turn WF into another Chinese money grabbing scheme disguised as a game.

We enjoy having to pay a crapload of money, just so we can truly enjoy Warframe, leave it alone!!!

Perfect World is an absolute terrible company, they are arguably just as bad as Nexon. Personally think they can go f*ck themselves.

Hopefully the lower the pricing, as right now its completely insane what they want for some Warframes. The game is fun, but not worth the time or money to get a warframe.

How is Perfect World supposed to **** this up? The game is already terribly monetized :/

I can understand Perfect World being involved, but what the actual hell does a chicken supplier want with a game development company?

I can only envision an extremely wierd fast paced Sumpo action MMO game centered around chicken.

Perfect World, like EA, corrupts whatever it is they touch. I haven't played the game myself, but this would keep me away forever.

Perfect World make some of the jankiest, boring MMOs ever. I've tried quite a few over the years because I've always liked MMOs but didn't want to pay subscriptions.

Perfect World is one of the reasons I now PREFER to pay subscriptions on MMOs. You get what you pay for and for a massive open world that needs to have plenty of detail and character that is doubly or triply so.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Not sure why that matters here. If anything Digital Extremes could help push their quality threshold up.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

<< LINK REMOVED >> It matters because Perfect World should be the ones being bought out and then erased not the ones doing the buying.

Hm, the studio of PW... I don't know, everytime I think about a company buying a Dev group, I remember EA and Bioware. Plus, bigger companies are more aggressive towards profits and Digital Extremes has shown itself to be very generous about it. I don't know what to say, pros and cons are balanced.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The game developers they take over, are always forced to turn their games into Grand fest-microtransactions clones of each other. The Western style of MMO's has gotten so over saturated that it's rare to find a MMO that isn't following that flawed blueprint.

Avatar image for deactivated-58270bc086e0d

@falboe031

The game is free, spambot.

I really don't get it. if I'm trying to post a related and meaningful link to an article or a YOUTUBE video, my message is instantly in pending mode and surely bored mods will delete it in a couple of days. And this fellow posts links to scams. Isn't this frikin stupid?

Ohhhh, and the message is pending for some ironic reason.

It was a word that doesn't even exist in the vocabulary, an anagram. This is officially frikin stupid.

For the longest time I thought Warframe and Warface were the same thing. Now I find out it's a chicken meat product. Not even a real game :(

I'm confused, is chicken meat products supplier part of the name, or are they actually a chicken meats product supplier?

<< LINK REMOVED >> They sell chicken. And chicken products. In Asia. Actual chicken.

''Some Warframe players are already objecting to the acquisition, fearing that Perfect World's involvement will have a negative impact on how the game is monetized''

I'm sorry, but i already played this game, it was pretty solid but the monetization completely ruined it, to get anything of worth you will be grinding forever or pay up.
Avatar image for kyphe

@demondogx Wait! so actually paying anything at all ruins a game for you? You think other people should pay for you or that the devs should work for free? I spent a total of £15 on this game using 50% and 75% discounts that everybody gets as log in bonuses. I will never have to pay another penny, this game is great value for money, all you need is some slots and you are set for life. So I have had over a year of gameplay for less than the price of a second hand retail game.

<< LINK REMOVED >> if you didn't know, on almost every major update, there were special events. Those events gave you a weapon or a frame, with catalyst (potato) and its own slot. Also there were random events that gave you other stuff that is also available for real money.

Most people download an app or widget that starts an alarm if one of the things you want (you can select all the things you want) is a rewards of the random events (so you don't even need to be playing the game).

So there were lots of way to get the "premium" stuff, without the grind (but true it takes time, but not time spent in the game).

As someone who got to rank 8 (when the max was 10, about a year ago), if you want to enjoy the game without any limits, just buy the slots for frames and weapons (waiting for the events doesn't stop you, but kinda limits you to a few frames). But if you want to focus on 2-3 frames and 6-9 weapons, you don't need the slots or any "premium stuff" (just wait for the events).

<< LINK REMOVED >>If you had tried to play it more than 1h and understand how stuff works then you wouldn't say that, your comment is almost a copy&paste of what every people who comes to any online game and want to get all the good stuff NOW say, and I call that BS, there are plenty of players making plat without paying a cent, included me, smart people does it very well, organized people does it better and dumb and/or lazy and impatient people has to buy everything or take a week to farm a special part or blueprint or just leaving.

PWE is normally pretty good about their monetization practices, at least with Star Trek Online and Blacklight: Retribution. But Sumpo? WTF is the only appropriate response.
