Warcraft III dominates sales charts, twice

Blizzard's real-time strategy game retains the top spot on NPD's weekly sales chart and goes straight to the top of the monthly chart for June.

Vivendi Universal has topped both of NPD Techworld's latest lists of best-selling PC games with Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. What's especially impressive about the real-time strategy game taking the top spots is that the special Collector's Edition of the game is counted separately and has itself grabbed spots on both the weekly and monthly charts. The virtual-life game The Sims and its Vacation expansion pack are right up there in positions two and three on the weekly chart, just ahead of Neverwinter Nights, despite the fact that Atari's new role-playing game has gone straight into the second position on the monthly chart.

Other new entries in the monthly chart for June 2002 were Backyard Baseball 2003 and Zoo Tycoon: Dinosaur Digs. The popularity of Grand Theft Auto III and Medal of Honor: Allied Assault showed no signs of waning, as both games retained positions in the top 10, while the likes of Spider-Man: The Movie, SimTheme Park, Civilization III, Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds, and the Galactic Battlegrounds expansion pack Clone Campaigns were pushed out of the top 20 in the last month.
