Walmart Changes In-Person PS5 Preorder Plans, Cites Social Distancing Concerns

There is a reason why you may be having a hard time preordering a PlayStation 5 from Walmart.

PlayStation 5 preorders popped up earlier than anticipated this week, and lots of people began running into difficulties getting one from retailers like Walmart. Walmart, which previously said PS5 preorders would be available physically in its stores September 22, quickly announced a change in plans. If you want to get the PS5 at Walmart and haven't preordered it online, you're going to have to beat the rush of people hoping for a system that hasn't been reserved on launch day.

Though online preorders at the retailer started yesterday, the new way for gamers to get their hands on a PlayStation 5 in time for its November 12 launch date from Walmart is to wait until the console actually releases. Previously, Walmart planned to take PS5 preorders, with people able to choose between the Digital and Standard editions. Now, Walmart's site states the PlayStation 5 is "coming soon," with no option to preorder available. We've seen it come back in stock intermittently, so there is still a chance you'll be able to snag an online order.

The change was likely put in place to follow CDC guidelines on maintaining social distance during the ongoing COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, as well as to keep steady control over in-store traffic. Considering how fast preorders have been selling out, encouraging people to do so in-store could easily lead to overcrowding.

"Walmart has decided not to proceed with the planned store preorder to control store traffic and keep our customers safe and socially distanced," a company spokesperson told GameSpot over email. "Customers can still get the console on November 12 when it's released. Apologies for any confusion."

Walmart has since hit another snag, with emails going out to several who preordered erroneously alerting consumers to wild price drops. One such price match even reduced the purported price to $20 for a brand-new PS5 console. Obviously we don't expect that error to last, but it's added to a sense of confusion about Walmart's preorder situation.

PlayStation later apologized for its messy preorder launch. It stressed that retailers would have more allotment for preorders in the coming days and there would be more chances to buy a PS5 through the remainder of the year. This will likely include Walmart, albeit for online shipping orders. Other retailers, such as GameStop, are offering in-store preorders.

The PlayStation 5 retails for $400 for the Digital edition and $500 for the Standard edition when it arrives November 12. We've rounded up everything you need to know about Sony's upcoming next gen system, including where to preorder and what its launch games are.

The Xbox Series X and Series S, meanwhile, release on November 10. You'll be able to preorder the systems from September 22.

They're only delaying it, it will be chaos during a preorder day or launch day.

Here in my home town, the highest numbers of new Covid 19 positives this week, have been the University followed by Walmart!! , and Amazon !! The odds of getting a console have went way down here. I mean I get the University with high numbers, due to young kids from around the country intermingling. But what is Walmart and Amazon doing?, spitting in each others mouths when they go to the place?

Also my first boss at Kroger's -him and his wife got covid and passed away at a assisted living home/nursing home, with his family trying to get them out of there before they could catch it. He used to let us have Nintendo Power magazines and EGM that didn't sale, he was the coolest. He would often donate to our local high school and college. This pandemic sucks balls, making 2020 one of the worse years and there is 3 more months to go.

I thought they had already opened preorders and sold through all the stock they should get. And thought they would. Are the going to cancel all those preorders now? After being the one who broke the preorder date and caused this mess from what I've heard?

@thecupidstunts: So what's this news about then? They should have already sold through all the stock they were hoping to get, haven't they? Or did they hold back a few consoles to have people fight over them on launch day?

@Atzenkiller: Walmart and Walmart Online are two different stores technically. So it would make sense that each will have different stock. Though it looks like this may be changing.

@Atzenkiller: There will be a second wave of preorders. Walmart has decided to hold on to any additional allotments until launch day.

@thecupidstunts: Funny thing about that, especially with covid being their reasoning. Wouldn't it make more sense to still go with their original schedule, but do home delivery only? I mean, if they're worried about covid, how is having large groups of people at your store on launch day the answer to the problem?

@bryanweary: Yes, I'm not sure I quite understand how it is better to have people pile in on release day as opposed to the 22nd. Maybe they are going to try to put steps in place for release day so that they can better control traffic and social distancing?

It's all very weird, but they're not canceling existing preorders that they already took.

Trampling each other to get covid to simply put your fingers on that sweet sweet xbox series and ps5... Pretty sad and funny at the same time. Good luck that day everyone. I'll be... Not caring thankfully.

Actually the biggest farce it that I was told that there will be a second "wave" of pre-orders. I wish they would have just did them all today. A lot more people would have been happy. Now that people know how crazy today was, the 2nd day will be much more chaotic.

Thankfully, there isn’t a single launch game I want to play. COD is a port and I haven’t even played the first Spider-Man game, yet. That said, Miles Morales seems like a PS4 game ported to PS5.

I’m good, for now.

@bat725: The full price version of Miles Morales comes with a full remastered version of the PS4 Spiderman for PS5, so you should get a PS5 to play the better version of the game.

@CashPrizes: Sorry, not interested. I already own Spider-Man on PS4.

But, enjoy! I’ll wait for a true next-gen game.

@bat725: Shit, I'm with you. Are we really that hyped for remasters of PS4 games on the PS5's launch? That says more about the error of launching so soon more than anything else.

We didn't get the remasters at launch, though. That's what's got me looking at this generation sideways more than anything else. Like, seriously? People are creaming their pants for... Uprezzed ports of games that have been out for years on the PS3 and 4? IN THE LAUNCH WINDOW!? Holy hell, even the PS4 launch had Killzone: Shadow Fall, which looked leagues more advanced than 2 or 3.

@YukoAsho: Demon's Souls is more than an up res, and Spider-man MM is standalone. Killzone ended up being a bust, so if DeS and MM are miles better, I'd take them over killzone any day

This is just stupid. This just means, on November 12, they will have hundreds of customers on the stores, instead of September 22. Running and fighting to get one of the consoles. On that day no customer wil be safe or socially distanced.

@dogzipp: Exactly. They think COVID will magically disappear by Nov 12th. And now they just made it more dangerous because more people will be going to stores expecting to get one.

@dogzipp: I was thinking the same thing. So instead of letting people preorder them and have them shipped to them lets just have everyone rush in the store on launch day to fight over them. Plain stupid indeed.

Also considering Walmart is the one that put them up for preorder first when they were supposed to go up the next day making everyone else follow.

@Raven97411: Well if they were to preorder them in store, they would have to pick them up in store too.

@philip6k: But then they would have to get them out of the pickup tower area for places with them instead of all being in electronics trying to beat each other to them. Still would get more delivery orders to cut down the numbers. Walmart put up more preorders online after this article so I guess it was inaccurate anyway.
