Wal-Mart launches trade-in program [UPDATE]

Retailer now accepting software and hardware trade-ins; here's what they'll pay for your games and systems compared to GameStop where possible.

[UPDATE] Following the publication of this story, Wal-Mart adjusted the trade-in values for many items. For the latest information, enter your game or system into this tool to find out what your wares are worth.

The original story is below.

Wal-Mart launched its highly touted video game trade-in program this week, going head-to-head with market leader GameStop. If you're stuck scratching your head about where to trade in your items, we've compiled a breakdown of trade-in values for popular games and systems at the competing retailers.

All values listed below represent in-store credit for items in working order. GameStop offers a cash option (less than in-store credit) while Wal-Mart offers in-store credit exclusively (but you can spend that on food and clothes!). For the purposes of this breakdown, we're only looking at in-store credit values.

Also, Wal-Mart only accepts hardware trade-ins via its website (they ship you a packaging label), while GameStop only accepts hardware trades via its brick-and-mortar stores. Finally, these prices are up-to-date as of today, though they are subject to change over time.

Something else to consider is that GameStop offers an additional 10% trade-in credit if you're a PowerUp Rewards member. Meanwhile, Wal-Mart has no plans to offer a loyalty card. In short, you should view this breakdown as a guide and not a definitive document.

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $357.50
  • 3DS XL - $97.50
  • Wii U - $156
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 3250GB) $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

  • Xbox One (with Kinect) - $390
  • PlayStation 4 - $375
  • 3DS XL - $105
  • Wii U - $120
  • Xbox 360 (S Model, 320GB) - $110
  • [PS3 - No direct comparison available]

Wal-Mart's trade-in website features a very handy tool that lets you plug in any game and determine its value. Unfortunately, GameStop only publishes a "Featured Trade Values" list, which is far from exhaustive. As such, direct comparisons between retailers becomes problematic. We have listed direct comparisons where possible.

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $22.10
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Titanfall (Xbox One) - $35.10
  • Need for Speed: Rivals (Xbox One) - $32.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $35.10
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $13
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $32.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $28.60
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $32.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $28.60
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $15.60
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $22.10

  • Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) - $29.40
  • FIFA 14 (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Forza 5 (Xbox One) $38.50
  • Need for Speed Rivals (Xbox One) - $38.50
  • Infamous: Second Son (PS4) - $41.58
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4) - $18.90
  • Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) - $38.50
  • Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition (PS4) - $33.88
  • Dark Souls II (PS3) - $38.50
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Wii U) - $33.88
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii) - $18.48
  • Bravely Default (3DS) - $26.18

That's where the direct comparisons end. But here are some more Wal-Mart data points for recently released games anyway.

  • Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One) - $29.40
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare (Xbox One) - $21
  • South Park: The Stick of Truth (Xbox 360) - $32.89
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS4) - $16.54

Worst trade-in experience EVER!!! I went to Walmart yesterday because their trade values are higher than Gamestop and Best Buy. It took the CSR 30 FREAKING minutes to figure out how to do the trade, while the line continued to back up, but they finally figured it out. So then I took the credit and applied it to Infamous SS (for store pickup the same day). However, when I checked out online, I got an error message saying something went wrong. Then I went back 1 page and submitted again, without realizing everything defaulted to "ship to home"...

So I immediately called customer service and they said they can't change it to store pickup, but I could cancel and get a refund within 24 hours. The rep submitted a cancellation request and said I should get an email within a few hours. The email never came, so I called again today, only to find out my order had been shipped already.... to an address I haven't lived at in years. I never order anything from Walmart.com so obviously the shipping address was never updated. I asked them if they could change the delivery address and supposedly I'll be getting a call from a supervisor... YEAH RIGHT. So basically I have to wait 2 weeks to see if my package is forwarded to my current address. If not, someone else is getting a free PS4 game, I suppose.

In summary - It's NOT worth the hassle. Lesson learned.

Yes, trade in your stuff to Walmart, its like Germany just nationalized their stores and they lost billions financially as a result... oh wait that just happened. LOL.

Meh, if anything maybe it will help gamestop be a better business now.

This article is slightly skewed in favor of Walmart. Like it says in the article they don't count the 10% power up rewards. And honestly if you are not apower up rewards member for $15 a month and you shop more then 3 times a year at gamestop then you are an idiot. You easily make that money back in savings.

So for those $30 games that is an additional $3. Nor does The article take into account that gamestop is constantly doing bonus trade in of 30%. I smart person will still go to gamestop.

So in theory you could get closer to the same amount at each place. The only benefit of Walmart is being able to buy other things.

<< LINK REMOVED >> i didn't pay anything for my power up rewards card, and i get those same discounts, and the powerup points, etc.

not sure if it's different in some locations.

Avatar image for shulet

<< LINK REMOVED >> Don't forget the buy two get one used games power up rewards renewal coupon. I usually get 3 used games that recently came out so they're still $50+. That's $50 savings right there, not including the 10% off.

Avatar image for smoothyplum26

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's $15 a year so yeah, anyone that does shop at Gamestop multiple times a year is missing out.

Avatar image for Tirnoth

<< LINK REMOVED >> You would make more selling on eBay or Amazon than you would with those two retailers.

Avatar image for crazyeyenomura

You get 425 if you trade in your Xbox One for a PS4 at Gamestop. I just traded mine in. Now it is a complete Sony gaming household here, well except for 3DS.

Darskspace is right, Walmart is offering crap for console trade ins. Good. I hope their trade system fails.

Avatar image for crazyeyenomura

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah I said the same thing. It's Walmart, I wasn't surprised.

Avatar image for StaticPenguin

Wow, only slightly higher than Gamestop!

Avatar image for MaddenBowler10

<< LINK REMOVED >> 'slightly' can make all the difference.

Avatar image for daikkenaurora12

So sell your system to gamestop and your games to walmart. Or just put it on ebay.

Avatar image for beerswagger

gamestop better start giving out cash for games and not the 8 dollars for a new game shit or people will be trading in there games for beer at walmart

Avatar image for Gigaman222

Didn't best buy start doing this last year? They weren't very successful from my understanding either. Of course Walmart can offer better competition which is a good thing since GameStop tends to screw over customers. *cough* xenoblade *cough* metroid *cough* ps4 camera

Avatar image for photoscott79

I plugged in a bunch of things into Walmart's trade-in search engine. Here are the values that I'm seeing after saying "Yes" to all questions:

3DS XL: $50

360 S w/ 320 hard drive: $55

PS4: $225.

Either the article is inaccurate, or Walmart has changed their values.

@Tbalestrini I own both PS4 an X1. After I finished KZ an Knack ,my PS4 collected dust for 3 months until SS , while my PS4 was collecting dust my X1 was an is being used everyday. I do love both consoles alot but today this second if I had to choose its my X1 but that could change in the future.

Avatar image for Zombrex

<< LINK REMOVED >> Who. Cares.

Avatar image for beerswagger

<< LINK REMOVED >> sure xboner

Avatar image for Tbalestrini

Good now everyone that are to proud to admit they made a mistake by buying a X1 can quietly trade in their X1 and buy a PS4

Avatar image for shulet

<< LINK REMOVED >> Or they could quietly trade in their PS4 that's collecting dust.

Avatar image for beerswagger

<< LINK REMOVED >> but what would they watch tv on in 720p

Avatar image for rickphoenixxx

@Tbalestrini Or vice versa.
Or just use the credit towards a good pc.

Avatar image for beerswagger

<< LINK REMOVED >> what makes you think people that if you have a console we dont have a decent pc or 2 or 3.PC people that are two fucking cheap to spend anything on a console are always bitching so stfu.

Avatar image for rickphoenixxx

Only 16 bucks for Killzone? WoW. So this list tells me TWO things....1. The X box One is now permanently going to be $450 at Wal Mart and 2.The Wii u is practically worthless, a freaking new version of the 360 is almost as valuable.

Avatar image for kahnseal

smh, yall do realize that retailors do not pay the normal price for these consoles right? they pay a lot less and the sellers tell them what they suggest they go for. but all that aside, gamestop is in serious trouble. they been shitting on people for years and now they gonna pay.

Avatar image for king_wrecked

oh, i can buy my clothes at walmart? FANTASTIC! SIGN ME UP!!!

Avatar image for BattleSpectre

Xbox 360 (S Model, 3250GB) $110

Damn why didn't the next-gen consoles come with 3,250GB worth of storage?

Avatar image for IndependenceYou

This seems so shady hahah The ps4 for $375 through me the hardest. How are they gaining anything from that. No ones paying $375 for a used ps4 let alone $376 if they want a profit haha. I mean i guess it makes sense if its all store credit. But it still doesnt make sense for that high of a price for PS4 i mean xbox1 is 390 thats a 110 drop that makes sense. 25 off does not. Just sayinggggg

Avatar image for huddle1

I agree with you. When I saw the ps4 value at $375 I didn't believe it. Then I realized the ps4 is still super popular and sold out all over. They will resell the ps4 for $375 very easily and also get ppl to buy games for it at the same time. So they are actually smart to do that.

Avatar image for king_wrecked

<< LINK REMOVED >> because what walmart gives you for that junk, you can only spend IN WALMART.

Avatar image for beerswagger

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> they sell beer and cigs gamestop sells other peoples tears.

Avatar image for rickphoenixxx

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>You can get anything at Wal Mart though.

Avatar image for angelofbeast198

<< LINK REMOVED >> this are trade in not how much they sell them use

Avatar image for sirkibble2

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's determined by current market value. The Xbox One is less valuable than the PS4 at this point, so its trade-in value is significantly hit.

Avatar image for wallacom

Talk about aggressive marketing. Go competition.

Avatar image for XNEXUS666X

I'd easily trade my X1 in. Is that the Colts on TV?

Avatar image for major_retard

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except that you don't own one because you're too poor. And if you buy a TV at Wal-Mart you're a moron...they only have the low end models of brands they carry and they suck.

Avatar image for rickphoenixxx

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>All TV's have parts from alot of the same places, and I have even seen cheap-o brands that rival Samsung in picture quality. Alot of the time you pay more for the name, just the name.

Avatar image for tommynj

And let the trade wars begin...I can trade my Xbox One in and put it towards a steam box or even get a new pc.

Avatar image for holidaysins

Some of these trade in prices are higher than what they are selling for on ebay

Avatar image for Vodoo

They don't even offer a 320GB 360! Only limited edition consoles came with those or you could buy that hdd separately for $120. That drive alone costs more than the $110 they're offering.

Avatar image for rickphoenixxx

<< LINK REMOVED >> Like anyone would trade in their 360 or PS3 for 110 bucks anyways, with such a deep library of great games.

Avatar image for billlabowski

<< LINK REMOVED >> I thought consoles were suppose to be inexpensive!!

Avatar image for devilzzz1983

More players in the trade in game better for the consumer. Go Walmart!
