Vivendi Universal Games has today announced that it plans to release Spyro: A Hero's Tail for all current-generation consoles toward the end of this year. Currently in development at UK-based Eurocom Entertainment, the game will see Spyro the Dragon attempting to save the Dragon Realms from the evil dragon named Red, who is attempting to take over the world using light-sapping Dark Gems.

"Since his debut in 1998, our purple dragon Spyro has been a favorite character among console gamers everywhere," said Michael Pole, executive vice president of worldwide studios, VU Games. "Spyro fans are sure to welcome his greatest adventure to date--an adventure game that immerses players into a deep storyline, [with] more-diverse, lush environments, and [that also] introduces a strong lineup of engaging characters."

Spyro will be able to execute a number of new movements in A Hero's Tail, including a wall kick, a tail swing, and a ledge grab. Additionally, Spyro will have a number of different breath attacks, such as those involving fire, ice, water, and electricity. Spyro will also be joined by four playable colleagues this time around, allowing players to assume control of such characters as Hunter the Cheetah, Sparx the Dragonfly, the dive-bombing penguin Sgt. Byrd, and a well-armed mole named Blink.

We'll bring you more information on Spyro: A Hero's Tail as soon as it becomes available.
