VR Support On PS5 Requires PS4 Versions Of Games

The PS5 doesn't have its own VR headset yet, meaning VR support is achieved through backward compatibility, even on new games.

VR support for upcoming PlayStation games is a little more confusing than we imagined. If you're looking forward to playing Hitman 3 in first-person to truly become Agent 47, you'll actually be doing it with the PS4 version of the game. Yes, even if you have a PS5.

Speaking to UploadVR, Sony explained that because the PlayStation VR headset acts as a backwards compatible unit on PS5, you need the PS4 version of Hitman 3 in order for it to work. The PS4 version includes a free next-generation upgrade if you play it on the newer console, so you should still be able to experience the enhanced visuals when outside VR. The entire "World of Assassination" trilogy is playable both in and out of VR.

It appears No Man's Sky will be doing something similar to achieve VR support on PS5, using the PS4 version of the game, though the enhanced power of the new console should at least improve loading times and performance.

Thus far, Sony has given no indication about the future of PlayStation VR, not mentioning new VR games or a headset as we approach the launch of PS5. Early PlayStation VR supporter Ubisoft is also developing several games for Oculus platforms, including Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell titles.

Because the new PS5 camera can't support the older PSVR headset, a potential second PSVR could rely on inside-out tracking. Oculus has transitioned to it already, and a patent filing suggests Sony could be going this route, too.

However, Sony did recently launch a portal that lets you claim a PSVR adapter for free, which you can use to play your PS4's VR games on PS5. All you need to do is enter your shipping information and a serial code listed on the breakout box in order to qualify, with orders expected around mid-November.

If you don't have a PlayStation, Xbox, or PC at all, you do have another option for playing Hitman 3. The game will be available on Nintendo Switch via cloud streaming, but it isn't clear if it will release alongside the other versions.

I am absolutely fuming at Sony over the way they are handling PSVR. When they confirmed its forward compatibility and that there wouldn't be a PSVR2 for at least a couple of years, I bought a headset, thinking it would work properly and fully with the PS5.

Very disappointing Hitman will not be VR on PC.

It will be limited by PSVR and locks out an already small audience.

That's extremely disappointing. Sony needs to fix this ASAP and allow PS5 games to use PSVR natively.

Also this URL doesn't work from the indicated support page: https://www.playstation.com/camera-adaptor

@girlusocrazy: you cant fix whats not broken... I cant play my copy of Last of Us remastered on my PS3 using my PS3 accessories. This is the same concept. PSVR isnt a PS5 accessory its a PS4 accessory that can be used on the PS5 to play PS4 games as such PS5 games wouldnt work using it, just like you cant play PS5 games using your PS4 controller

@DuoMaxwell007: Yeah but the assumption many were making was that the headset was just display tech and since it was supported on PS5 it would be forward compatible.

I love the Hitman series. I own every game. I am so excited to buy it Dec 2021 when all content has been released and it's $20-$30 on sale.
