Virtual Console up and running

The Wii's downloadable game service has gone live with a dozen titles and a few surprises.

While the Nintendo Wii doesn't go on sale in the US for a few more hours, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed for GameSpot today that the first owners of the system will be able to get online and download classic games right out of the box.

Just in time for the Wii launch, here comes the Virtual Console.
Just in time for the Wii launch, here comes the Virtual Console.

Already on the Virtual Console, users can purchase Wii Points and download games from older systems. NES games cost 500 Wii Points ($5), Super NES and Sega Genesis games are 800 Wii Points ($8), and Nintendo 64 games are 1,000 Wii Points ($10). There weren't any TurboGrafx-16 games on the service at press time, but Nintendo has said pricing for those will start at 600 Wii Points ($6).

While the games are expected to be faithful re-creations of the originals instead of the type of revamped or rearranged arcade classics that have been sold on the Xbox 360's Marketplace, GameSpot editors found at least one new trick had been added. After quitting a session of Sonic the Hedgehog back to the Wii channel menu, and then loading the game back up, the editors found that the Wii had automatically saved the editors' place in the game and resumed play right where it had left off. Also, while downloading games, users are shown a Mario-themed progress bar that shows the mascot plumber or his brother Luigi running across the screen, hitting coin blocks and collecting coins off the ground.

Mario serves as the download progress bar.

Nintendo announced last month that the following titles would be available on the Virtual Console by the end of the year. Games already confirmed to be up on the service today are italicized.

NES
Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Ice Hockey
Pinball
Soccer
Tennis
Urban Champion
Wario's Woods
Baseball
Solomon's Key

"By the way, who ever thinks that no one will want to download and play all of Nintendo's classic games is a major idiot. Back during the 80's and 90's was when Nintendo made their best games, in fact my personal favorites are the original Legend of Zelda and Super Mario Bros. With the ability to download versions of these classic games that work (I still have my NES, but since it's 22 years old it doesn't always work properly) I won't be surprised if Nintendo makes more money off of the Wii than Sony could ever dream of with the PS3." Wouldn't be surprised since each PS3 sets back Sony 300 clams. Meaning each replacement, free, demo units eat up a huge amount of money as well. Sony looks like they may get ten dollars each new PS3 title sold. Meaning a gamer would have to buy 30 brand new games to make Sony break even on one unit. Sony just put in Blu-ray as a trojan horse to get blu-ray a standard. Blu-ray if it became a standard would be far far more valuable then the Playstation brand in terms of revenue, license fees etc.

I was playing Altered Beast the other day and couldn't get past the second level, heh. Damn I'm bad at that game. "Welcome to your doom", indeed.

I can't wait to get my hands on a Wii, I've already pre-ordered mine, now I've just got to wait for my GameStop to open up. By the way, who ever thinks that no one will want to download and play all of Nintendo's classic games is a major idiot. VladimirCrow Wrote: Is anybody actually going to play these old games, seriously why would anyone want to play from more than 10 years ago. Are you for real??? You won the prize for "ignorant statement of the thread". Of course people are going to play these old games. People may have had the games back then but for some reason either sold the system, lost the games or whatever (I sold my system). They now crave to play these old classics that with time may look quite dated but are still just as fun as ever. If I was ever going to be a "proud owner of a Wii" (I have a PS3), I would definitely be jazzed over the fact that Nintendo has released these classics and made them available for a small fee.

I think hearing about this successful online approach is only making me more angry about holding off on getting a Wii... it will happen, but in the mean time I'll continue to watch from afar and hope more games come along utilizing the gear

VladimirCrow: Say's the guy with the Chun-Li avatar. There hasn't been a Street Fighter game in 7 years. I'll tell you why people still play games that are more than 10 years old, because they were amazng then, and they're still very very fun. I still play Street Fighter 2, almost everyday in fact.

Tha_evil_genius... that is the beauty of retro! There are so many awesome games out there, some even better than what todays greatest games offer. I mean, alot of games today are outdated by 2 years. Alot of the retro games stand the test of time, which is alot to be said for "games from 10 years ago" Actually, alot of these games go beyond those years! Can't wait to get some rocketknight adventures and greendog on there! ;)

"the editors found that the Wii had automatically saved the editors' place in the game, and resumed play right where it had left off." Excellent stuff! BUT, if you power off (and it goes onto standby) whilst in game, will it keep the position then when you turn it back on and go back to the game? Also, if you quit out of the game, and basically stick in a wii game... would it save the position AT ALL? Or is it only for just going out of a menu? It would be sweet to have a proper save function as most Megardrive games had a passowrd system.. HOWEVER this is how retro games used to be! So bring on the retro!! :D

Great great system. Im glad Nintendo endures the test of time so well and keeps its games fresh and inovative. I cant wait to see the Wii's expanding library over the next year and just how much they can do with the system.

lol I love my 360, but that is sad when the Wii's Virtual Console launch lineup blows away Xbox Live Arcade in one fell swoop. Even though the title offerings between the two are different... XBLA offers more arcade nastalgia, there is more to be gained from Virtual Consoles lineup because "these" were the games that kept kids indoors back in the days that started to kill arcade business.

@ trackmanep233 No, I played Zelda at a demo booth and it works very well. Hacking and slashing with the sword was satisfying. Also played Rayman, and did the level where you swing the cow over your head, and that worked very well. I had a lot of reservations before I played it but they all came to nothing. Graphics were pretty slick, too.

Wow, I`m impressed. That feature where the Wii remembers your position in-game and resumes when you open the game again is cool. I hadn`t expected something like this to be implemented. Nice job, Nintendo, very nice job.

Are you seriously serious? $600 for a console from a company infamous for it's faulty consoles but 5 bucks for a 20 year old game is 'way, way overboard'.

As well as any programming needed to be done. Also the fees cover the Wiiconnect 24 which provides new content for Wii games such as Zelda. That stuff takes programmers who have to be paid. You also have the bandwidth costs as well. Third parties will not put their stuff on the vc or xbox arcade or PS3 whatever online service unless they get their fees. Would you rather have ads in the Nintendo online service, or pay to use it? Personely I would do research and only pay for games I hadn't played in a long time or never had and I would only get one or two a month. These prices are fine they are what the market of casual gamers will gladly pay. It's also legal this way to get the games. Bother to do some effing thinking before you rant.

Yay for older games! I don't particularly need the virtual console on a wii if I ever get one though. I still have a working NES with a working zapper and power pad I might add--interesting that the power pad still works and the DDR pads some times break in less than a year.

Seeing how everybody and their grandma have downloaded ROMs and emulators at some point in their life, I'd suggest if you guys don't go accusing everybody of being Nintendo pirates.
