The first trailer for The Fate of the Furious arrived on Sunday. It included all the action and car chases you'd expect, but you might have been surprised by the story twist that it revealed. We learned that Vin Diesel's character, Dom, has gone rogue and appears to be a bad guy this time, for some reason.

Now, Diesel has said that this kind of story was an "inevitable" one for the Fast & Furious franchise.

"I can't tell you how hard it was to make that movie," Diesel said in a Facebook video. "We've been talking about family for so many pictures. It was inevitable that there would be a chapter that would challenge that concept of family. The dark place that Dom goes though ... well, you'll just have to see the movie. I guess it all makes sense when you see the film."

The Fate of the Furious is directed by F. Gary Gray, who most recently helmed the hugely successful hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton. Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, and Jason Statham are all returning from the previous movies and are joined by Charlize Theron, Helen Mirren, and Kurt Russell.

The film comes out in April 2017.

Earlier this year, Diesel announced the release dates for the next three parts in the series, with parts 9 and 10 following in 2019 and 2021. He also told Variety that there were plans for spinoffs. "We've written out storylines for various characters," he said. "We've been playing with it for a long time. It's a very rich property and we're committed to treating it with a lot of class."
