Vin Diesel Compares Fast & Furious To The Lord Of The Rings

Actor Vin Diesel has commented on and compared his Fast & Furious franchise to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Speaking to Variety, Diesel said it has become difficult to expand the "mythology" of the Fast & Furious franchise, not unlike how Diesel believes that Tolkien must have had a difficult time expanding the Lord of the Rings universe.

"You know what gets harder? The work off-screen. The thinking, the expanding… there's a reason why Tolkien stopped writing after a while," Diesel said (via DigitalSpy). "Because it's so hard to continue mythologies. Nobody thinks about it in that context, but it's real."

The interviewer suggested that Fast & Furious is "The Lord of the Rings of action movies," and Diesel agreed with this. "Well said, from your mouth to God's ears, it's so true."

Then Diesel put on a British accent and said, pretending to be Tolkien, "I should have stopped after The Hobbit." You really need to listen to that audio--check it out above.

Diesel reportedly auditioned for the role of Aragorn in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings series, but Stuart Towsend landed the role. Then, after filming began, Townsend was fired and Viggo Mortensen was hired in what became a career-defining role.
