Video Q&A: Sony explains PSP adhocParty

Kristin Neirinckx discusses how PSP owners can use their PS3s to play multiplayer non-infrastructure games over the Web.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Starting today, Sony Computer Entertainment began offering adhocParty to North American PSP owners. The application lets PSP owners use their PlayStation 3s to play normally local-only wireless ad hoc games online much like they would with the game's infrastructure mode. The service was launched in Japan last year.

Ain't no party like an adhocParty...unless you count infrastructure mode.
Ain't no party like an adhocParty...unless you count infrastructure mode.

The free application can be downloaded from the PlayStation Store as part of the update that went out this afternoon. Though the PS3 and PSP will communicate wirelessly, it will require that the PS3 have a wired connection to the Internet. The service will also support voice and text chat, with friends meeting inside lobbies of 10 areas called "worlds."

Unfortunately, adhocParty will not work with every PSP game that has an ad hoc mode. A full list of compatible games has not been released, but Sony Computer Entertainment America marketing manager Kristin Neirinckx told GameSpot that "most" titles with an ad hoc mode should work with the application. Two major titles, Sony's Gran Turismo PSP and Capcom's Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, have been confirmed to have full support.

To see Neirinckx's full video demonstration of the North American version of adhocParty, check out the video below.

it makes sense why you have to cable the internet from ps3 to internet box; if the ps3 was noramlly connect to the internet using wi-fi, it would not connect the psp online, but if the ps3 was using its wifi to connect to the psp's wifi (WLAN) then it would have to be cable because the wifi is being used up by the psp :D would of been better if they done it the other way psp wierd connection to ps3 then ps3 connects online, save so much time

wow this is cool. you know what that means infrastructure mode will have less people using it. cuz most people still dont have WiFi at home. so that means Ad Hoc mode will have more people playing online which means more lobbys to join in and have more fun. GOOD JOB SONY WOOT

Ok, @sk8erwill93 the controllers are bluetooth which is not the same as the systems wifi @zomglolcats fear not as companies such as develo have produced products that use your electrical wiring within the house to transfer internet from your router to your machine with one plugged in behind the router (with an ethernet going into it) and one plugged in behind your system (with an ethernet coming out of it), on paper its more reliable than a wireless router but mine is only used to test friends computers and laptops and to power my freesat box. @KittyHeart The wireless ad-hoc was never designed to work over the internet so the PS3 is there to convert all the stuff it can't handle on its own. What better time to invest in a PS3 though :D Also does anyone know anything about a possible UK launch?

makes since because the ps3 isnt a router but maybe they could have use the usb port send the data but the games weren't programmed for that. i guess thats the only way it could work.

"Though the PS3 and PSP will communicate wirelessly, it will require that the PS3 have a wired connection to the Internet." What? Well I guess I can't use that then... PS3 is in the living rooom and router is in the bedroom. Use wireless for my PS3.

I've always complained that there aren't enough Infrastructure-enabled PSP games. This is a great way to take the pressure off of the Developers and Publishers to create servers to handle it and it gives consumers the option to play online with people. _ @fps_d0minat0r the video loaded just fine for me. You might want to close all browser windows and try again.

` I am not an expert, but I also think it is just simply impossible to establish PSP adhocParty via utilizing two-sided way of the wireless connection through the PS3's internal wi-fi card due to some hardware restrictions of it or it would have already been done that way if otherwise.

The thing about the PS3 being hardwired is that the PS3 is not able to have two wireless connections.

Maybe it is not user-friendly implemented since the feature requires a wired connection to make PSP adhocParty playing possible but the concept around the idea is very nice and I still hope that it will not be overpopulated by the nasty cheaters.

I was just thinking about trying Phantasy Star Portable with this. Anyone know if that works? Sucks having to relocate my PS3 though. They need to work it out so it works over wi-fi.

This is really neat, it's being doing what some underground applications have been doing for some time now and bringing it to the light.

wish they could figure out a way around the wired connection requirement. I mean if my psp is in range of the ps3 isn't it also in range of the router? I would think it could go through the router

I've been waiting for this ^^. I have my PS3's wired anyway (wireless in my house is crap in my room for some reason). So it's all good. I did download it from the ***' network long ago. Never got around to using it though, just too much Japanese text flying around XD. I mostly want it to play Monster Hunter Online and stuff like that.

Not liking that I have to have my PS3 wired. @Avenged_Plague: And its not for people who don't have wifi. Its for use of games that are "local only" meaning games that you have to have another person with a PSP near you to wireless link them together. Infrastructure games are ones that can be played across WiFi internet.
