Video game television channel in the works

Comcast is currently in the developmental stages of establishing a video game television channel.

Comments

Cable television conglomerate Comcast is reportedly planning to launch a digital cable network dedicated solely to video games. The group behind the project helped form E! Entertainment Television. The channel is reportedly scheduled to launch sometime next year. The channel will be called G4, and Comcast has reportedly agreed to fund it. G4 will target hard-core game players with programming that will preview and review video games. The video game industry is reportedly worth an estimated $7 billion per year, and the NPD Group recently reported that sales of video game merchandise are already up 28 percent from last year.

The idea for the network came from Charles Hirschorn, the former head of Disney's animation unit, and office space has reportedly been secured in Los Angeles for its operations. Debra Green, E!'s former senior vice president, will promote G4's launch and serve as the network's CEO. Dale Hopkins, E!'s former senior vice president of marketing, will be the head of G4's affiliate and advertising departments.

We'll have more on G4 when it becomes available.
