Video Game Hall Of Fame Adds Four More Games

The Strong Museum's "World Video Game Hall of Fame" has inducted four more games--and they are some big names that have had a major influence on the video game industry.

Starting off, 1961's Spacewar!, which is considered by many to be the very first video game, is now in the Hall of Fame. Created at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and playable on the PDP-1 minicomputer, Spacewar! was not commercially sold, but it helped people think about "creative new uses" for computers to play video games, according to the Strong's Jon-Paul Dyson. The other inductees include the classic American football game John Madden Football, pioneering action-adventure game Tomb Raider, and the beloved RPG Final Fantasy VII.

These four games came from a pool of nominees that also included Asteroids, Call of Duty, Dance Dance Revolution, Half-Life, King's Quest, Metroid, Minecraft, and Ms. Pac-Man.

Games are recognized for a number of criteria, including "icon-status," longevity, and geographical reach, as well as impact on design and development on other games, pop culture, and society. Full details on the criteria can be found on the Strong Museum's website.
