Viacom says Xfire is PS3-bound

[UPDATE] Media giant is working on a version of its recently acquired PC utility for the new console--but Sony now claims the service will be limited to a single SOE game.

When Sony first talked about the PlayStation Network Platform in March, it described a suite of communication features that included messaging, voice and video chat, matchmaking, ranking, and friends lists. Now, it appears that some of those functionalities will be handled by a PlayStation 3-specific version of the PC gaming utility Xfire--although it appears to be for only a single game.

Xfire was acquired by Viacom in April, and currently boasts more than 5 million registered users. Last month, a Viacom conference call reporting the company's second-quarter earnings included a brief mention of the service--and Sony's next platform.

"Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market," the company's then-president and CEO Tom Freston said in a transcript. Freston was removed from his position by the company's board of directors earlier this month.

While Xfire is primarily an in-game instant messaging program, it also offers some Xbox Live-like features, such as friends lists and chat options. However, the earnings call did not specify how many of these would be integrated into a PS3 version of Xfire, or how large a role Xfire might play in the system's PlayStation Network Platform.

[UPDATE] The plot thickened late on Tuesday, when Sony Computer Entertainment America gave 1up this statement. "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," a rep reportedly said.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer went one step further, telling the site the name of the title in question. "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title," he said. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

For his part, Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy flatly denied the service would be the backbone of Sony's answer to Xbox Live, as some had speculated. "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further," he reportedly said.

Yeah, that's a little hypocritical... You want XFire to be PC-only yet you wouldn't mind if it was used by Microsoft...for XBL...for the 360...a console...which is NOT a PC.

So on the PS3, there will be an specific version that will run on the console? And it can integrate with the PC version? Why does Sony have to ask for help to program a Xfire-like program for their system? Can't they make their own and leave the good old PC-only Xfire alone? If it were to be Microsoft and Xfire to be making this deal, I would be excited, more XBL capabilities and such would have been be great. It's nice, Xfire is getting bigger and bigger, yet I am beginning to like it less and less. Damn you Sony!

This sounds like good news, mostly since Sony is a HARDWARE company....their software offerings leave much to be desired. Microsoft, on the other hand, is a SOFTWARE company...it's no surprise they have a better offering, it's what they do......either way, we'll all see what happens when the Sony online platform is released...until then, stop the fanboyism. Why do people have to be haters?

Great Xfire will be the service for PS3, and xfire is owned by Viacom, and Viacom owns MTV. (SARCASM) Get ready for MTV style crap on PS3 marketplace, ugh.

I'm not sure why you need a 3rd party dev to do something that sounds like it should already be part of Sony's online offering.

How is Sony copying when they made a deal Xfire to get a console varient of the program? 360 fanboys are so desperate to spin this into something bad they're saying it will suck without even playing it.

As a 360 owner, I am not going to even try to claim that I have a bias.. but with that said--- I kinda find it a bit sad that sony has to outsource such a major function of the console. I am not saying they are copying or being cheap... but with all that nice hardware jamed in that console, one would expext to see software to match. When I heard the original spec's of the system, I was very impressed. Then things went so far downhill (no standard hdmi support on the cheaper console, delay, downgraded spec's) I just considered myself lucky for not waiting. Don't get me wrong, this system appears quite amazing.. and a lot of sony's products are top notch (except Sony Online entertainment, as brought up by another previous Star Wars Galaxies player). Sony will do well, no matter what they put out- same goes with Nintendo- they just have a huge loyal fan base. Microsoft has set a standard for online services.. fanboys on both sides must agree to atleast that much. It takes competition to see advancement, and advancement is good for everybody. People are becoming so blinded in their loyalties that they don't even seem to realize--> we are all gamers with different preference.. who even cares what some people want to play. What one person buys is their economic vote for that console to continue, evolve, and be supported by that company. Buy what you like, simple as that.

I don't really know what Xfire can offer the PS3 since I never used it. I gues sit will allow sony to compete with MS on the online realm. As far as Sony being unoriginal... they are and they areon't. The same ccan be said of MS and Nintendo. Examples? Sony copied rumble and motion detection from Nintendo and now live from MS Nintendo copied motion detection from previous PC devices made by MS and copied the four controller port console from sega's saturn MS copied the DVD capability and dual analog sticks from Sony, They all copy each other and fanboys will always see their favorite company as the inovator of everything.. Shame on all of you that do this

Oh noes here we go again, potential good news met with ................ This may be why we don't pay, similar to PC's where online multiplayer is the same. And since the PS3 is more closer to a "pC", wouldn't that be better? If Sony made a centralized system like XBOX 360 then we would have to pay since you need reliable servers (maintenance etc) deve, oping costs, etc etc. If this was implemented (correctly) it could mean something very good for PS3. Copying? LOL, here we go again. Well then all gaming systems copy the first gaming system since it got user to a game on your tv using a controller. And 360 ranking copies of of PC ranking systems. I could go on and on. But it comes down to this, if you don't like it don't get it. More for us.

I think that the PS3 may catch up to Live in 3 years because of this. M.S. better come out with a new wonder controller or something soon. The Live adv is now only temporary.

mayby this is sony's way to get a grip on the pc's because most of it is from microsoft so they can't do that what xbox live is doing, mayby we can now interact with the pc users in a little way with xfire?

For all of you bad mouthing whatever console for lack of originality, the computer was doing it first and still does it better. As for the xfire move, I think it's pretty nifty. I never really liked the xbox friends thing that much, and I think a simplified chat program like xfire may help encourage people to go online and whatsis.

Shtinky, well said. Anyways, this is just another step in the evolution of gaming. No, it wasn't playstation who started it, but they are adapting to the new market place. This is a great move. I say that because with a new online service, we now have somthing to compare to 'live' and that only means that both online services can do nothing but out do one another now. As for the people angry at sony for "Copying" Microsoft: look at some original ideas that have only gotten better, the rumbling controlers and wireless controls to name a few. Its a matter of evolution, and this new rival to xbox live will spark new ideas in the developers of the services.

C'mon why the Trolling?

Wow. Nice move on Sony's part. I was just thinking that Sony's online capabilites probably won't match up to the 360's, but now it has potential. I'm concerned that the point of Xfire on PCs will get lost in translation...

this is from << LINK REMOVED >> [UPDATE 2] We got in touch with Dave Karraker, SCEA's Sr. Director, Corporate Communications who explained to GameDaily BIZ that Xfire has been in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, NOT SCEA. The deal would potentially incorporate Xfire's technology into SOE's PS3 title Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, but Xfire's tech would not serve as an overall solution for the PlayStation Network Platform. That said, it's entirely possible that such a wide-ranging deal with Xfire could still be brokered, but Karraker couldn't tell us more.

Am I the only one whos abit tired of Halo? Dont get me wrong. Halo was a fantastic game. Its the reason I had to have an Xbox as soon as I saw it. In fact it was probably the ONLY game worth getting an Xbox for until Splinter Cell came out. That was a long, long gap between great games in my opinion. Halo 2 was probably even better, but it just lacked the WOW factor of the first time we saw Halo. Part 3 is going to have to be pretty special I think to really get my attention. I'm sure I'll still get it, but I'm way more excited about Resistance and Gears of War.
