Viacom says Xfire is PS3-bound

[UPDATE] Media giant is working on a version of its recently acquired PC utility for the new console--but Sony now claims the service will be limited to a single SOE game.

When Sony first talked about the PlayStation Network Platform in March, it described a suite of communication features that included messaging, voice and video chat, matchmaking, ranking, and friends lists. Now, it appears that some of those functionalities will be handled by a PlayStation 3-specific version of the PC gaming utility Xfire--although it appears to be for only a single game.

Xfire was acquired by Viacom in April, and currently boasts more than 5 million registered users. Last month, a Viacom conference call reporting the company's second-quarter earnings included a brief mention of the service--and Sony's next platform.

"Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market," the company's then-president and CEO Tom Freston said in a transcript. Freston was removed from his position by the company's board of directors earlier this month.

While Xfire is primarily an in-game instant messaging program, it also offers some Xbox Live-like features, such as friends lists and chat options. However, the earnings call did not specify how many of these would be integrated into a PS3 version of Xfire, or how large a role Xfire might play in the system's PlayStation Network Platform.

[UPDATE] The plot thickened late on Tuesday, when Sony Computer Entertainment America gave 1up this statement. "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," a rep reportedly said.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer went one step further, telling the site the name of the title in question. "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title," he said. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

For his part, Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy flatly denied the service would be the backbone of Sony's answer to Xbox Live, as some had speculated. "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further," he reportedly said.

quote from starwarsfan11 "NO xfire has gone to the dark side!" well put, thats why I've never used xFire, its too much like Apple's iPod, everybody has/uses it. not saying that I hate Apple, or the iPod I just don't favor the iPod over Creative, anyways I'm getting a Macbook soon.... enough...

VegetaJr Not a bad move at all. Xfire seems popular amongst it's PC fanbase -- you could apply this statement to anything any group of people liike....

The fact that Freston was removed after that comment sticks of conspiracy, not that I mind :P. This all seems good, from what I know Xfire do a good job at the whole internet match-making thing.

TofuDrift1986, when did AA7 ever mention anything about XBL? All he said was that the idea wasn't original, nothing about XBL being the first... you're obviously a cow, I take it

Dreamcast offered online play, not an actual service.

Screw viacom, they going to screw up the video game industry like they do the music industry.

AA7, XBL isn't original either so get over yourself. Its called the Dreamcast and it had the first real online console service.

To "the_element600"... What are you talking about? PS2 has online games! A great deal of them! Most things that come out on Xbox and PS2... The PS2 version has online play... For free infact... And just to remind all of you... Microsoft didn't invent online gaming... so stop all this such and such copied so and so... It just gets iritating...

This is a great idea. I have had Xfire for a bit and loved the in-game chat and how you can join into someones game if you have it by just clikcg on their name. The best part is that there will be voive chat. This is a terrific idea.

This is seriously the best move Sony has ever made. I love Xfire, I love PlayStation. 2 Wonderful things combined into 1 = genius.

Genius. I mean, why bother developing your own version from scratch? It's a waste of time. And with this you have the possibility of showing you the PC games they're playing too.

So, if Sony copied MS because Sony also has online gaming, then MS copied ID Software's online multiplayer model.

CyphenX It seems to me that the Play Station 3 is trying to copy everything Xbox LIVE that they can (right down to the Xbox LIVE guide button on the controller) and that this is their tack-on friends and communications service. What the Hell r u thinking?? u mean that ps3 copied everything?? LOLs u r lame

You guys do know that Xfire doesn't just track Online Games right? Go by their site. They have a list of games Xfire tracks you in. Literally hundreds of games are open for Xfire. Xfire is just another messanger service, but with some add-ons for gamers.

Avatar image for Ced_Quijote

now now, everybody copies everybody, it's good for the over-all quality of the whole gaming experience. too bad the whole market isn't "open" informationwise... what absolutely splendid hard- and software we would end up with. Utopian dreams; universal degeneration. You're welcome to act the copy-cat Sony, all we ask is that you add something (the more the better) of your own. For the sake of future gaming.

Oh dear, MS should refine his own plastic for the console. Im not saying MS is rubbish but they should be able to make their own plastic. you ms followers are far more stupid than a headless chicken.

Avatar image for the_elements600

Oh dear, Sony can't make their own network platform. I'm not saying Xfire is rubbish but they should be able to at least make their own network service. And how many games are actually going to use it? The PS2 bareley had any games online. It was just another useless feature. Unless a lot of games are going to use this service I really see no point in it being there.

Spyware: the term spyware refers to a broad category of malicious software designed to intercept or take partial control of a computer's operation without the informed consent of that machine's owner or legitimate user. As far as I'm concerned, Xfire was spyware on my computer. It records data while you are not aware. And no I do not mean how long you've been playing a game, that everyone is aware of.

According to a story on shacknews this is only for Untold Legends. Not the entire PS3 network. I am assuming this is since SOE is making Untold Legends and maybe a PC version or something like it is also in the works?

Let's face it... PS2's online gaming system SUCKED big time. It was difficult to use and not supported as much as anyone hoped. It only makes sense that Sony would want to have a widely supported and unified online system to compete with XBOX Live. With Xfire they immediately have access to a huge online gaming community, to which they can even offer cross-platform features. Nice move, and at last something positive to hear about PS3!

I just want to play games. If Xfire makes the PS3 better, then good for them. Real gamers don't care about the platform, just the games. I like all the systems out there, past and present. Some succeeded and others failed. At least they all tried. All game companies are fighting for our hard earned dollar, so if Xfire helps Sony, then so be it. It's good for XBL to have some competition. Makes it better for everyone in the long run.

Im sick and tired of people just bashing everything and anything 24/7. If youre a 360 1337 fanboy, fair enough...but to all the people that are looking forward to the PS3 this is great news. We all know nothing is perfect and that perfection needs time, so I aint bothered waiting an extra 4 months. Price might drop and less chance of my PS3 breaking down :) so whats all the fuss about, in the end its all just a game!

Well this is good news for Sony but it's only one step toward the PS3 online system. As I recall, though I maybe I'm wrong , X-Fire does not provide any monitoring or service tools to prevent cheating protection or server maintenance. If this will be intergrated, these type of issues must be solved first, otherwise PNP will be vulnerable to hackers and cheaters.

As an Xbox Fanboy I think this is great news...it might push MS to make Xbox Live Gold Free for everyone.... Although I don't see what's wrong with Silver and free live weekends. And the quote from Kutaragi says that "basic" services will be free...so what isn't?
