Viacom says Xfire is PS3-bound

[UPDATE] Media giant is working on a version of its recently acquired PC utility for the new console--but Sony now claims the service will be limited to a single SOE game.

When Sony first talked about the PlayStation Network Platform in March, it described a suite of communication features that included messaging, voice and video chat, matchmaking, ranking, and friends lists. Now, it appears that some of those functionalities will be handled by a PlayStation 3-specific version of the PC gaming utility Xfire--although it appears to be for only a single game.

Xfire was acquired by Viacom in April, and currently boasts more than 5 million registered users. Last month, a Viacom conference call reporting the company's second-quarter earnings included a brief mention of the service--and Sony's next platform.

"Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market," the company's then-president and CEO Tom Freston said in a transcript. Freston was removed from his position by the company's board of directors earlier this month.

While Xfire is primarily an in-game instant messaging program, it also offers some Xbox Live-like features, such as friends lists and chat options. However, the earnings call did not specify how many of these would be integrated into a PS3 version of Xfire, or how large a role Xfire might play in the system's PlayStation Network Platform.

[UPDATE] The plot thickened late on Tuesday, when Sony Computer Entertainment America gave 1up this statement. "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," a rep reportedly said.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer went one step further, telling the site the name of the title in question. "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title," he said. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

For his part, Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy flatly denied the service would be the backbone of Sony's answer to Xbox Live, as some had speculated. "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further," he reportedly said.

Microsoft can make their online service free but they choose not to. And don't give me this Microsoft sob story of how things cost money. Thats what Microsoft has don't they? And plenty of it. If products are the best because we have to pay for it then why does Windows suck so bad? Typical fanboy at its best.

NOLSON haha, because you have played the ps3. please give me a break. just admit it, ps3 is gonna have a sweet online system. ps3 owns, but 360 doesnt. LOL. Thats a good point about MASTERCHIEFUSMA not playing the PS3, but how can YOU say the PS3 owns when the same could be said about you? :) Cmon people, wait till the system is actually out before you make comments about how cool it is. I'm suprised people have said, "The PS4 totally owns the Xbox 720. It has the cell2 processor and L33T graphix."

I really have no idea what to expect from sonys online service. Anyone remember the people that were protesting on star wars galaxies? They had all gathered together in one place to vent about some credit duping and there were so many people that the server started crashing and the responce from the gm's was to kill everyone there. Silly example maybe but thats the one that sticks in my memory because it was news all over the sites like this one. Those folks pay $15 bux a month for SWG and that was the best they could do to fix the problem. Now we are going to have a service thats free? I would rather have a fee or have to stare at a coke logo at the matchmaking screen if it will make the online service work better. Maybe it will work great, Maybe it will be better than XBL, None of us can know till we plug it in. Ps2 games were always a hassle to play online because of the fractured game setups and there were never any patches to the games so if you found a cheat or an exploit it never got corrected hopefully that was a result of not having a hard drive to put the patch on and not the fact that there was no money to pay people to fix them. I can't wait to see if this works because if it does it means microsoft will have to match them, but if its not every bit as good as XBL with killer demos,tv shows, movie previews, fan videos and things like that i would really rather just pay a monthly fee to make it as good.

How many of you have played the PS3. None of you. So shut up. PS3 Xfire is going to be different than the PC version and we all know it. Dont say that its bettet than Xbox Live either, Xbox live is amazing and until you try them both you cannot pass that kind of judgment.

Quote: thepeter "PS3, Xfire. Wii, Gamespy. Xflop, same old same old." Oh, please. If it weren't for Xbox Live you wouldn't see Sony or Nintendo scrambling to come up with a competing service. MS set the bar pretty high, whether or not you like the platform. It's fine to criticize, but base it on facts instead of fanboy instinct. Sheesh.

MASTERCHIEFUSMA "With a crappy online system like PS3, Xfire and PS3 is a bad idea, they havent been able to do anything right, Xfire owns but PS3 doesnt, it just doesnt work" Have you essembled a PS3 yourself in order to play it before the general public? Have you actually used their online service? Give it time before you pass judgement.

You people need to just chill out. Xfire is a great sevice and it is free. So with the deal about Xfire and Sony is a good thing. If you people would just stop bashing a CONSOLE you might learn a thing or two.

This could be interesting, but it doesnt really tell you much. I dont know, having a third party handle my online functionality seems pretty flaky. The benefit of having Live so well integrated into the 360 makes it seem like a seamless experience. Ive only had a 360 for a little while, but all of the Live features are very well implemented IMO (Please dont comment if you havent even tried this obviously). Automatic updates, marketplace, voice chat, email, and multiplayer are easily accessible. It remains to see what Sony will offer for their online strategy, which I am very eager to see, since they are charging absolutely nothing for it. I still am very dissapointed with the online capabilites of my PS2. The hard drive and broadband adapter were the worst investments I made on that system. Finally, if Sony does not make online functionality consistent for all PS3 games, I will have even less faith. The beauty of Live is that all online functionality follow submission guidelines from microsoft. If they can address this issue, I look forward in playing many PS3 games in the future.

Well, the reason why I don' think it'll be free is because Sony's not making it, nor from the information I've read outside of here, is that it'll be run on Viacom's servers. So I don't see Viacom being generous to let Sony use it's stuff for free. While I think this is a step in the right direction for Sony, since they know nothing about dedicated service and how to run an online property like M$. I don't see this directly competing with Xbox Live, or Live anywhere.

why don't they make it for all of the systems? ooh that would be smart now wouldn't it Viacom. Also to the person that said something to the following effect "Since they are out sourcing it i wouldn't be surprised if it cost money" Hmm lets think about this XFIRE is a FREE App for the pc, why would it cost money for the PS3.

Could be interesting feature...BTW, Nice job shutting that dumb@$$ up, assassinX01... Anyway, still buying a 360 or Wii games show up (I.E. Heavenly Sword, Final Fantasy XIII, DMC4, and of course, Metal Gear f***in' Solid 4). Nevertheless, the PS3 will be gone within a matter of days when it comes out...so I think that the few PS3s that are available this year will go fast...and by the time a steady number of PS3s are available, there'll be some games that justify that price...

THANK GOD they didn't use gamespy. Xfire owns, this is definitely a good step for Sony. Plus, you can download demos and movies from it, and game auto-updates. Xfire also has kick ass contests on their web site. To noobs like AA7 that have never used Xfire because of their $50 XBL, I bid you gg.

assassinX01- Bungie already proved Halo 3 was running in real time. They even took control of Master Chief. And the Killzone 2 Video was obviously prerendered, there was no proof and the company that made the video admitted to it. I don't care about the rest of the stuff on Devil May Cry 4 or Final Fantasy cause I don't care for those games but just wanted to make sure Bungie gets the credit it deserves.

Sony's online service, the 'PSNP,' will be interesting as we learn more about it in greater detail at this years TGS. I wouldn't bash on it so soon just yet. Give it a year to pass judgement onto the service. I'm glad to hear technology such as this will be used onto the Playstation console that is powerful enough to support it. The PS2 was a good system but without the games it would of been nothing. Just like the Xbox would of been nothing without Xbox Live, the same goes for Halo. Don't lower the gavel to Sony's death sentence just yet. Their still able to sell consoles for the fact that Sony has built up a good reputation over the years in which no one can deny. Like I said give it a year before you give Sony a swirly.

"You just lost Assassin's Creed and now I hear rumours about Devil May Cry 4 & Final Fantasy XIII going to the 360. Plus the 360 has incredible exclusives like Halo 3, Mass Effect, and Gears of War, which look far better than anything i've seen from PS3. Let me get to the point, I was looking more forward to a PS3 a few years ago. Now Sony has just f**kin screwed everything up in every possible way. But you fanboys just dont care, youre too busy wasting your money and ridin Sony's d**k. Ownage? Yeah right! " 1.Assassin's creed was never a PS3 exclusive (it premiered on the 360 for christ sake). 2. The rumors of DMC4 and FFXIII going onto 360 are just that: rumors. Both of their producers have explicitly said they're PS3 exclusives. 3. Yes, Halo 3 and GoW look fantastic, but if we're going to go on a tangent about which console has better graphics, then you need to face the facts: the PS3 has a better GPU and proccessor (that's part of why it costs more) since it's a tuned up version the nvidia 7900 GTX, and the 360 graphics processor is a slightly toned down version of the ATI Radeon X1900. Plus, if Killzone is subject to the "prerendered or not" arguement, then so is Halo. 4.Seeing as how by your rant your knowledge of the PS3 is jack squat, you know very little of what is going on with the PS3, so I'm not sure how you can claim sony has "f***** screwed" up everything. 5. If the Sony fanboys are riding Sony, then I'm going to have to go out on a limb and say not only are you Microsoft's ****buddy, but your getting g***banged to top it off. Maybe next time you should try harder not to make yourself look like a biased moron; ultimately, the more competition there is, the more the industry benifits, you boorish twit.
