Viacom says Xfire is PS3-bound

[UPDATE] Media giant is working on a version of its recently acquired PC utility for the new console--but Sony now claims the service will be limited to a single SOE game.

When Sony first talked about the PlayStation Network Platform in March, it described a suite of communication features that included messaging, voice and video chat, matchmaking, ranking, and friends lists. Now, it appears that some of those functionalities will be handled by a PlayStation 3-specific version of the PC gaming utility Xfire--although it appears to be for only a single game.

Xfire was acquired by Viacom in April, and currently boasts more than 5 million registered users. Last month, a Viacom conference call reporting the company's second-quarter earnings included a brief mention of the service--and Sony's next platform.

"Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market," the company's then-president and CEO Tom Freston said in a transcript. Freston was removed from his position by the company's board of directors earlier this month.

While Xfire is primarily an in-game instant messaging program, it also offers some Xbox Live-like features, such as friends lists and chat options. However, the earnings call did not specify how many of these would be integrated into a PS3 version of Xfire, or how large a role Xfire might play in the system's PlayStation Network Platform.

[UPDATE] The plot thickened late on Tuesday, when Sony Computer Entertainment America gave 1up this statement. "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," a rep reportedly said.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer went one step further, telling the site the name of the title in question. "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title," he said. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

For his part, Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy flatly denied the service would be the backbone of Sony's answer to Xbox Live, as some had speculated. "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further," he reportedly said.

ok i dont get y 360 fanboys are here. but lemme break it down. MS is full of themselves they think they are amazing. whereas- Sony actually realizes that instead of making one from scratch why not go to a company that already has a huge business on this stuff. they can make the stuff they need but these functions can be done by a more experienced company. SONY IS SMART TO PARTNER MS IS DUMB NOT TO. and good bye this thread is only good for ps3 peeps anyway.

Chaosweav3r - theres nothing sad about it. Its business - if there is a field a company is weak in, you get support from people who are better. This is benificial for both Sony and X-Fire.... I really dont understand how people can use every single piece of Sony news as something negative. "Sony has announced that they will be able to launch the PS3s the way they previously hoped!" Anti-Sony Fanboy: "Haha, oh em gee, Sony is going to saturate the market with their exploding PS3s and end up killing livestock as a source of power instead of a power brick!"

@CHAOSWEAV3R It's probably a lot faster, cheaper, and just as good (if not better) than Sony having to do it themselves, especially if Xfire allows the PC and PS3 communities to communicate with each other. Unlike Sony, Microsoft already has an IM product and server-side technology that they've already poured millions of dollars into, so using that for Live is relatively trivial compared to starting from scratch. Its' a smart move (hope Xfire-tech gets licensed and worked into PNP), and one that will help Sony match Live Anywhere when Vista comes out. @osxgp Sony, like any large company, can have multiple things going on. Fact is this is a software/networking issue, and no amount of software engineers is going to help Sony's problems with the Blu-Ray diodes because its a hardware issue. Just because the radio in your car breaks it doesn't mean you can't use the air conditioning, right?

CHAOSWEAV3R... sigh. You are looking at this too linearly. Think about your company getting an offer from sony. This could mean lots of money for your company, your user base can expand, many great things could happen. That being said, lots of people are putting somthing down that they know nothing about. How can we really know? xbox is out, it set a 'bar' and now other companies have to jump so high. This is an attempt (in my opinion) to expand the ps3 user base to the PC.

I understand your argument CHAOSWEAV3R. As I stated before this could be a smart buisness tactic as Sony will more than likely use these companies that they've accumulated with working on the PS3 to do something different on a new venture whatever it may be. Xfire on the PS3 is really no big deal. Xbox Live is a great service. I have my doubts on restricting people through monthly payments when it should be free. But thats my personal politics on the matter. Sony is trying to compete against Microsoft who wears the crown of online supremacy. By competing with other companies they need to use other peoples ideas and make them better. In this case XBL features. It's no different than Burger King using ideas from McDonalds for the dollar menu. Or Ford using ideas from Chevy. Everyone using each others ideas are common place within buisness.

Even though Xfire isn't a game, it's just sad to see Sony having to drag Xfire into the mess by putting their messaging program into the PS3 when Sony could have easily put it in by themselves, since they are making "the best console in the next gen." And MS has basically made all their own software for 360 and it's great.

CHAOSWEAV3R does it really matter who makes what for their consoles? Microsoft and Sony both have other companies making games for their systems, now are they bad guys for doing so? No. Does everyone need to create their own software in-house to meet your standards? You all are making a big deal out of nothing. And since you bring computers into the picture, they're a prime example of what we're arguing about.

@ENERSTAR: "Yeah, that's a little hypocritical... You want XFire to be PC-only yet you wouldn't mind if it was used by Microsoft...for XBL...for the 360...a console...which is NOT a PC." I am just saying that I think it should stay on the PC, and not consoles. But if it were to sign that deal they did with Sony to Microsoft, it would of been cooler, IMO. That's it. --- @K1LLSWITCH "CWEBB04z "Grat News! CHAOWEAV3R...whats wrong with asking for help? Everyone asks for help, even Microsoft did." Exactly. Microsoft and Sony both asked for some sort of help whether it be from IBM or Toshiba to build their consoles. This news of Xfire heading it's way onto the PS3 is no big deal. Either way we can nit pick the snot out of this article along with both the consoles all night, we're still not getting anywhere." Yes, that's fine I know that. It's just like computer manufacturers; they build the computers and use parts produced by other companies. But those parts are major bits of the hardware, not some online software. Xfire is an IM. Yet Sony could not make a similarly-functioning software for their console?

osxgp "Why doesn't Sony focus on the current issue right now....manufacturing problems. I know they are thinking about the future and should be. All the fanboys are getting their panties in a bunch, so Sony better not mees this up...Kind of like the PS2 launch. Shortages and system malfunctions plagued the PS2 for the first year. I should know because I worked for Game Stop at that time and saw many returns only to tell customers that we don't have the units in stock because we are STILL trying to fill pre-orders. Wow, that also reminds me of the Xbox 360 launch; minus the malfunctions. WILL IT EVER END?" Exactly. If a fanboy of one console blames console A for whatever it may be, console B is just as guilty. This is a good buisness tactic as it will accumulate other companies onto their console. In doing so these companies can work with Sony in future ventures together with another console who knows.

Well dont put down the PS3 just yet (can you say Hypocrite!?)...I love Xbox live...but im not so sure about X-fire. I used it for a while but i hated signing in because what i typed was recorded in the password box so i ended up having to delete everything to sign-in (single click highlight didnt work for some reason). I hope they seriously fix that when applying it to the PS3's software...

I can only imagine what this could lead to down the line. Being able to maybe play with people on the PC version when you are on the PS3 would really be cool. Plus there could even be game that allow the Keyboard and Mouse on the PS3 so it would even be more fair with people on the PC. So this is good news.

RahKayne: You sid it before me but I said the same. There is no longer originality, just improvements over previous things. Munkyman587: Even though you must like 360 the most, you at least make sense when you speak about other consoles. I respect that I am buying a PS 3, and even if it was 800US with the x fire add, as the potatoblahbalh said I would buy it, because in the long term, I will have saved more money than having payed for th xlive service. Besides they are not raising the price for the moment. Why does people has to ruin one good new we get, dont you know that we have read the article? and that most of us has a pc and if we whant we can try xfire to see how it handles? Ive tried for my EaW at it worked great.

I haven't really gotten into Xfire, I still think it lags my games online as I've done serveral tests with it. Also it records stats but I always forget to turn it on. I mean its useful to a point but if they are using this to compete with the 360's communication interface, there is no way they'll be able to deliver it on that sort of level. Now I mean if you can talk to people on the PC through it, then yeah that'll be a great tool because I really do get sick of having to switch to the PC to talk to my friends on MSN. I mean if they could cross these lines, they'd have a feature the 360 hasn't got. I'm not saying this doesn't have potential, I'm just saying its got to be able to be always running, and always improving to beat the 360's communication system.

lmao at xboxisnot360, I appreciate your humor that you decided to add into this discussion. Personally, I think it is an alternative to Xbox live. Not just a direct copy of XBL but something that offers generally the same features. Overall both services will include the same things, but whats key here is it has potential to be a live anywhere-esqe service. Xfire is well established on the PC in gaming culture. Well windows is owned by Microsoft so they are there already, and is a huge publisher for its ownself on the pc. Xfire well... is basicly a messaging service with rankings. Very similar, could we possibly extend messaging to becoming inter-device gaming bridge, play games on xfire on pc and console. Say new third party title comes out by a known devoloper who is making a game for pc and ps3. Ohh look, the game has xfire built into it for gaming with console players... who knows, just a random thought.

"Poor Tom Freston, fired for leaking it." Well, if that information was supposed to be confidential/secret, then Sony could've sued the company. Given that he was CEO, though, I'm sure he's not living off of food stamps right now. No sympathy for him - I'm sure he'll get another six-figure salary job soon enough.

@K1LLSWITCH Agreed. In this case it's much better to pay someone to use their developed, stable, mature product than try and rush something out yourself. It'll be nice to know that there should be parity between the two online plans at least in this regard. I'm wondering how Sony is going to be paying for this, though? Are they charging the developers extra? Ad revenue? I hope it's not coming out of the normal royalties - it'll take that much longer for the PS3 to reach profitabilty :(
