Viacom says Xfire is PS3-bound

[UPDATE] Media giant is working on a version of its recently acquired PC utility for the new console--but Sony now claims the service will be limited to a single SOE game.

When Sony first talked about the PlayStation Network Platform in March, it described a suite of communication features that included messaging, voice and video chat, matchmaking, ranking, and friends lists. Now, it appears that some of those functionalities will be handled by a PlayStation 3-specific version of the PC gaming utility Xfire--although it appears to be for only a single game.

Xfire was acquired by Viacom in April, and currently boasts more than 5 million registered users. Last month, a Viacom conference call reporting the company's second-quarter earnings included a brief mention of the service--and Sony's next platform.

"Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market," the company's then-president and CEO Tom Freston said in a transcript. Freston was removed from his position by the company's board of directors earlier this month.

While Xfire is primarily an in-game instant messaging program, it also offers some Xbox Live-like features, such as friends lists and chat options. However, the earnings call did not specify how many of these would be integrated into a PS3 version of Xfire, or how large a role Xfire might play in the system's PlayStation Network Platform.

[UPDATE] The plot thickened late on Tuesday, when Sony Computer Entertainment America gave 1up this statement. "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire," a rep reportedly said.

Sony Online Entertainment's Chris Kramer went one step further, telling the site the name of the title in question. "SOE has been in talks with Xfire about potentially including some of their technology in Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom, our PlayStation 3 launch title," he said. "This proposed deal is completely separate and independent from the PlayStation Network Platform, and is something that SOE was examining specifically for Dark Kingdom. More information on Xfire and Dark Kingdom will be coming soon."

For his part, Xfire CEO Mike Cassidy flatly denied the service would be the backbone of Sony's answer to Xbox Live, as some had speculated. "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further," he reportedly said.

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, can't stop typing. Good news yes. Bad news no. I can't wait to see how everyone thinks of the PS3 in 3-4 years.

Dont we all love our 360 fanboys? that with out even reading the article they post really intelligent and deep opinions like for example: brad-d with his "I really didnt read the whole article so I will half-comment and say something negative on Sony" or CyphenX with the always nice "MS invented everything...so if you have something remotely similar you MUST have copied MS" remember they are the same kind of people that said that if you have something with the word "live" MS is going to sue you...

I hate annoying advertisements. Like having to watch a commercial before a gameplay video. Hopefully you won't have to watch a commercial before you chat, or send an IM, or play a game!

Xfire is great, so this should be interesting. Stop with the **** about it copying Xbox Live - what do you expect them to do? Get rid of voice and text chat, get rid of friend lists, and get rid of online gaming altogether? Xbox Live isn't even original itself.

Like some people said below - for all of U that R 2 lazy 2 click on the link... Sony of America said: "We can confirm that Sony Online Entertainment is in talks with Viacom and Xfire for a single, specific PS3 game. However, there are no announcements at this time regarding any discussions between SCEA, Viacom and Xfire." It is pretty self-explanatory. It's just for 1 game. But then again... who knows what Sony is REALLY up 2 - they like 2 B sneaky. But I can C it being something that is game-specific and not necessarily on the system... It could work either way. People could debate this all day - As 4 me, I won't worry about it, I'll just wait and C...

It seems to me that the Play Station 3 is trying to copy everything Xbox LIVE that they can (right down to the Xbox LIVE guide button on the controller) and that this is their tack-on friends and communications service.

Sounds promising...yet Viacom ownership can lead to "pop-up" advertisements or something during chat sessions. Viacom is sure to make money off the service, I just hope that Xfire features will come at a reasonable price...maybe even free!

to xbox is not 360 you just stupid to say that xbox 360 is crap. xbox 360 defines next gen gaming. it set standards for next gen gaming you say ps3 is better but how could it be. no one has even played a ps3 as yet except for prolly gamespot and the developers of the games. look at games like prg 3 that is amazing detail in a racing game. you should try not to let your ignorance get the best of you. even though i like xbox 360 i wont say the ps3 is crap beacause i sure its a great system as well i just rather xbox games than playsation games thats all.

I really doubt it's going to be a executable file, it would make much more sense just to have it fully intergrated.

petenuzo and chaosweaver are just xbots who think that if something is not original it is a piece of **** But let me tell you: HALO is not an original game. DOOM 1 was an original game, Super Mario was an original game, frogger was an original game, HALO as most(99%) of the actual games are just copys of an original idea.

chikahiro94 @duque501 "Hmm... and Live is just an evolved version/imitation of Sega.Net, which is an evolved version/imitation of Xband. What's your point?" And Xbox Live is Microsofts version of the Sega Channel. See everyone uses ideas from others in order to compete. lol

Thats exactly what Sony is going to do although at this years E3 they said that the service will best represent MYSPACE. In which everyone knows they need to compete with XBL.

bossjimbob Quote: donmohsin "Xbox lovers are suddenly gettin scared" I'm a proud 360 owner. I've got nothing to be "scared" about. Heck, I'm happy for PS3 gamers because they'll finally get a taste of some of the online features they've been missing out on. If anything, this puts pressure on MS to innovate and improve Live so I'll get more bang for my buck. In the end, we all win. =================== Great to know there are X360 fans out there that understand exactly what is happening rather than blindly following hearsy through unfounded truth.

You guys should read the 1up site. It's update states that it will only be used for one game. The whole story is being minimized by Sony. Yet another debacle.

@Windblade91 Microsoft didn't need to partner up on this particular issue - they already have the technology with millions of dollars and years of development behind it. @a_pettenuzzo11 You think Live is completely original and built from the ground up, with nothing reused or adapted from Microsoft's IM or server products? I don't think so - that would be a waste of Microsoft's time, money, and resources. Xfire is meant for gaming, and there's no logical reason why Xfire (which is basically a specialized IM) can't be on the PS3 and of the same quality as the Windows version. There's no technical reason why Xfire can't be used on the Wii or 360 for that matter. We're not talking about Photoshop here!

Windblade91 ok i dont get y 360 fanboys are here. but lemme break it down. MS is full of themselves they think they are amazing. whereas- Sony actually realizes that instead of making one from scratch why not go to a company that already has a huge business on this stuff. they can make the stuff they need but these functions can be done by a more experienced company. SONY IS SMART TO PARTNER MS IS DUMB NOT TO. and good bye this thread is only good for ps3 peeps anyway. ok i was just looking at this article im not a biased fan-boy i waz planning on buying a ps3 but then the price hit and was like no, so heres the thing sony is try pretty hard to get as many parteners as it can for thier online system yea thats ok just heres the thing its gonna suck....xfire is meant for a pc not a console they shouldve made an original online system instead of taking from other online system. and sony isnt smart to partner with xfire, ms is smart not to they made something ORIGINAL as with sony they did nOt!!
