"Very Bizarre" -- Elijah Wood Responds To The Title Of Amazon's Lord Of The Rings Show

Frodo actor Elijah Wood has once more shared his opinion on Amazon's big-budget Lord of the Rings TV show. Fandom reports that one of the talking points in Empire Magazine's upcoming joint interview with Wood and Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe is about Amazon's show.

Repeating what he said in 2020, Wood said the title Amazon's show is "bizarre" to him because the program will take place at a different time than the Peter Jackson films that he starred in.

"I find it very bizarre that they're calling it Lord of the Rings as a shorthand, because it's not Lord of the Rings! It takes place in the Second Age of Middle-earth," he said.

Last summer, Wood remarked that he was "super fascinated" by the Amazon show, but he said he believes calling it "Lord of the Rings" is misleading due to the fact that that name refers to a specific set of stories within author JRR Tolkien's broader world.

"They're calling it 'The Lord of the Rings,' but I think that's slightly misleading. From what I understand, the material they are working on exists chronologically further back in history in the lore of Lord of the Rings or Middle-earth than any characters represented in Lord of the Rings," he said. "It sounds more Silmarillion era. Not to get nerdy, but it's the Second Age of Middle-earth."

For what it's worth, Amazon has not confirmed of The Lord of the Rings is indeed the title of the show, or if it's just a working title.

Wood, who stressed that he has no inside knowledge about Amazon's series, said he's "curious" about the stories the new Lord of the Rings show may choose to tell. He added that he's happy that it's filming in New Zealand because that will give it an element of continuity with the film series, which also filmed there.

Wood has said he is "absolutely" interested in having a cameo role in Amazon's show, if it makes sense. "If there was a world where that made sense and was organic to what they’re doing then yes. Look, any excuse to get to go to New Zealand to work on something I am absolutely there," he said.

The Lord of the Rings TV show takes place during the Second Age, but there is no word on any of the characters who might appear in it or by what means the show will handle its time period. The Second Age is a 3,441-year era that had some huge events happen: the forging of the Rings of Power, the war with Sauron, the creation of the Ringwraiths, and the sinking of the island of Numenor into the sea.
