"Very Big Technological Breakthrough" for HTC Vive to Be Shown Next Month

Part of the reason why HTC and Valve recently delayed the launch of the HTC Vive VR headset to 2016 was because HTC recently made a "very, very big technological breakthrough."

That's what HTC CEO Cher Wang said Friday at the Vive Unbound developers gathering in Beijing, according to a report from Engadget.

The breakthrough was significant enough, Wang said, that the team decided to take the time necessary to get things right, even if that meant missing the original target launch date. "We shouldn't make our users swap their systems later just so we could meet the December shipping date," she said.

Wang didn't provide any more details, but said the breakthrough will be shown at CES in early January. GameSpot will have a team on the ground to bring you all the news as it's announced.

Just this week, new HTC Vive images leaked, showing off new looks for the headset and controllers.

The HTC Vive was originally intended for a 2015 release, but the VR headset was recently delayed until next year. Another VR accessory set for release in 2016 includes a stationary bike that has your pedalling through virtual reality.

Sony will be releasing its VR headset, PlayStation VR, next year as well, and that's when we'll learn more about the "what else" features, including the price. Oculus Rift will also be launching in the New Year. While the price has not been announced, Oculus CEO Palmer Luckey says it will cost more than $350. Pricing for the HTC Vive consumer model is also a mystery at this point.
