Valve: We'd Love To Bring Half-Life To VR, But It Might Never Happen

"We don't have enough time or people; So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR."

Valve would love to make virtual reality games based on all of its major franchises, including Half-Life, the developer explains in a new interview with Kotaku. Programmer Jeep Barnett revealed that Valve--which just recently announced its own Vive VR headset--has already experimented with using Half-Life assets like headcrabs and machine guns in virtual reality.

Could this experimentation eventually lead to a full-blown Half-Life virtual reality game?

No Caption Provided

"We're not saying, 'no,'" Barnett said. "But we don't know what the right thing is [yet]. Our most precious resource is time, and we don't have enough time for people to do everything."

"Would we like to make all of our franchises in VR? Absolutely," he added. "But we don't have enough time or people. So we have to figure out what's the best fit, what plays to the strengths of VR."

At the Game Developers Conference this week, Valve demonstrated a virtual reality version of its Portal series. You can read GameSpot's detailed preview here.

Also in the interview, Barnett reveals that Valve has conducted virtual reality experiments for its other popular franchises, including Left 4 Dead and DOTA 2.

"Is Half-Life a good fit? Is Left 4 Dead a good fit? Is a new franchise a good fit? I don't know yet," he said. "We're really trying to cover the broad spectrum of what we could do, and then we'll start focusing on spearheading that."

Which Valve game would you like to play in virtual reality? Let us know in the comments below!

I remember when the HL episodes were announced, Valve said that Episode 3 would be released by the end of 2007. Think about that for a second.

Is that so, Valve? How about you finish up HL's story first before considering silly novelties like VR?

I'd rather see Half Life 3 over a release of the previous games in VR. That's just me.

Valve needs to build an omnidirectional treadmill like the Omni Virtuix that works in tandem with their motion-tracking base stations. That way VR environments are not limited to a single room; so a game like Half-Life would be feasible for VR at that point.

TF2 was already ported to work in Oculus Rift. I don't see why it couldn't be in Vive.

Disappointing. Half-LIfe or no, I thought by this point they would be well into the development of a premium VR experience. Sounds like they are still figuring out what to do.

No time? Then what the hell are they doing now?!?!?!?!

Their hands can't be full with just Steam, DotA 2, CS: GO and TF2.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I know the TF2 team is only 3-5 people now, since the community does most of the work. Valve is only about 200 people, though, and a lot of them are working on Source 2, Steam, Steam OS, Steam machines and other hardware, VR hardware and software development, etc. Most of the employees are probably just doing R&D.

Valve is a billion dollar company. Money is not the problem. If Valve wanted a VR Half-Life game, it easily has the money to pay for it as it makes at least 30% from everyone else's games and content sold on Steam.

Your answer to never seeing another Half Life game. Not enough people to make it
Apparently Gen 2 Morpheus is the best VR atm from PAX

<< LINK REMOVED >> He didn't say anything about another Half-Life game other than it wont be in VR. He didn't say that they aren't making one at all. The buzz from people who have demoed Vive has been extremely positive. The only thing Morpheus has over it in my opinion is the interactions with the move controller but Vive has a similar wand-like controller but with lasers. I don't know, its a wait and see thing.

<< LINK REMOVED >>

But the motivation for both parties is very different. George RR Martin is an old man. And I think he wrote Game of Thrones as sort of a pass time. But it become so popular that people started demanding that he write it full-time, which was not his original intention. Gabe Newell on the other hand, appears to be avoiding Half Life 3 out of fear that it will become the next Duke Nukem Forever. So the problem isn't so much whether Gabe can complete HL in time, but whether he is able to overcome the pressure of living up to the HL legacy.

Valve just doesn't want to admit that the government won't allow it. It'd be too unhealthy for everyone to fire up HL3 in VR. I mean, the first headcrab would cause heart attacks. Hell, imagine Ravenholm from 2.0 in VR...

Instead of wasting time on that VR stuff I'd rather they properly focus on HL3 and give a proper closure to that freaking series!
