Valve: Steam Machines Will Be "Front And Center" At GDC

No one cares anymore. A Linux PC hooked up to the TV that can only play a small selection of games compared to Windows machines and hardly any of the huge back catalog of games users have already. This is a pointless vanity project by Gabe Newell. The controller is the only interesting thing about it.

A Steam based console that could play any Steam game would be cool, but I'm just not certain of how many games it can play before it needs and upgrade, and how convenient it is to use.

I guess when I play on my PC, I expect to be able to play a game whenever I want, however I want, so it bugs me when I have to put up with even the most basic DRM like Steam's. I'm okay with it on consoles because I'm fine so long as I have a disc, but when it's all digital, DRM is a big no-no.

In Valve time, that's pretty quick, especailly for something that's quite different from all other stuff they've been involved with. I'm not looking to buy one, but I think it's good that the project is making progress.

I'm trying to but I can't understand what's the point of a Steam Machine (or living room PC for gaming). People looking for a cheap PC that runs games at a decent rate probably also want this very same PC for working, so what the point of having it attached to a TV anyway? If they are looking for a cheaper solution that can be used as a media center the resulting machine won't have enough power to properly play games?

I dunno. I really hope it succeeds but I ca see enough potential clients for this kind of product right now.

Steam Machines may be aimed at "people that want a living room PC", but I'm willing to bet they will be more for "people that want a PC for gaming without having to learn about PCs".

Yeah, you can say that it's not that hard to learn about them, or you could easily get someone else to build you a PC, but I've seen a lot of console gamers say "nah" to both of those options. They'd rather just pick up a box, plug it in and play. Even though I don't need/want a "Steam Machine" myself, I can see the value in them from that perspective.

I'm not interested in a steam machine. But I am very interested in the steam controller. I know it looks weird but I have high hopes for it. My hope is that it will bridge the gap between the precision of a mouse and keyboard with the comfort of a controller.

Oh to all the people here blathering about 'whats the point just buy a pc', you seriously underestimate how technically challenged the majority of people are including most gamers. Everyone posting regularly around here is a dork or nerd so it seems like its a given. lol

Oh i remember the times when it was first announced and when i had dozens of angry steam fanboys attacking my comments because i wrote that the steam box is pointless. They just couldnt handle the fact that poeple were trashing their precious gabe. Now i see in the comments that they died out...

Buy/Use a PC you have, get a PC get a controller. BAM! Steam Machine.. Why bother buying one of these?

I don't really see who Steam machines appeal to.....best keep people rightly separated into PC and console camps like god intended.

Why even bother.

Steam should have launched the machines when they announced them last year. It would have been the perfect time. Instead it took forever to happen and impatient people bought Xbox Ones and PS4s. No one was willing to wait another near 2 years for these systems to come out.

I felt like Steam Machine's were DOA back when they were announced, but feel like they are dead even before arrival because of the way Valve handled everything since then. The demographic for these things is so small and the market will be so over-saturated that no one will make money except Valve.

I really like the idea of the power of a PC and the accessibility of a console, but the approach here is wrong.

They are better off just developing the OS, we already have the machines to play, it's a real gaming OS that we need.

Too bad Steam machines isn't gonna be successful (i foresee). If it did, Microsoft gg and they can continue with their xbox fandom.

lol this thing has been talked about for a couple years now, and if and when it comes out, its gonna support like 100 games. I'll stick to having a PC, thanks.

Nice concept but with Steam OS (Linux) being limited to certain titles, it probably won't sell too strongly early on but when you install Windows and get it to start Steam big picture on boot up, it should be a good unit (should be able to play Origin games like FIFA too).

It is a good concept in theory except they aren't fully upgrade-able. Also, Steam OS isn't running all the Windows games so we have to throw another 100 bucks on top of already marked up hardware (pre-built and branded) for an OS that can run all the games.

IDK I'm just not too impressed by these yet.
