Valve: Steam Machines Will Be "Front And Center" At GDC

"We're planning a very large presence at GDC with Steam Machines being front and center."

Steam Machines will be "front and center" at the 2015 Game Developers Conference in March. That's according to a Valve representative, who told Game Informer that, after skipping last week's Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company has major plans for this year's GDC.

"We're planning a very large presence at GDC with Steam Machines being front and center," a Valve representative said.

Valve officially revealed its Steam Machines hardware initiative in September 2013, and a number of third-party manufacturers showed off their designs at 2014's CES. Most recently, Origin PC's top executive told GameSpot last week that the term "Steam Machine" no longer means much of anything.

"I think that's kind of pretty much dead," he said of the term Steam Machine. "It's like a living room PC--is now the new term. Living room PCs have been around forever. That's not anything new either. But it seems like there's a legitimate demand and push for living room PCs."

In addition to Steam Machines, Valve may use its GDC 2015 showing to talk more about its brand new operating system, Steam OS, and possibly the unique Steam Controller. The Steam Controller design was recently finalized, according to Origin PC CEO Kevin Wasielewski.

No one cares anymore. A Linux PC hooked up to the TV that can only play a small selection of games compared to Windows machines and hardly any of the huge back catalog of games users have already. This is a pointless vanity project by Gabe Newell. The controller is the only interesting thing about it.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You're losing sight of the big picture. Valve is laying the groundwork for a universal operating system for all OEMs. This will diversify the options for everyone, rather than making people be limited to essentially 3 choices. If this happens, exclusive games would die, cross-platform would be possible, users would have plenty of controller choices, and lots of other bonuses. It's not just a little side project.

<< LINK REMOVED >> 800 games and growing is a small selection of games, I know not all of them big AAA games, but stop saying small selection of games. That and lots of big games are coming to SteamOS, if compared to consoles SteamOS will launch with a library better than consoles.

A Steam based console that could play any Steam game would be cool, but I'm just not certain of how many games it can play before it needs and upgrade, and how convenient it is to use.

I guess when I play on my PC, I expect to be able to play a game whenever I want, however I want, so it bugs me when I have to put up with even the most basic DRM like Steam's. I'm okay with it on consoles because I'm fine so long as I have a disc, but when it's all digital, DRM is a big no-no.

<< LINK REMOVED >> All games have DRM and that's not going to change. It's very clear people will steal anything they can. You also might as well get used to disc going onto the scrap heap of history. The question is do you want to lock into one licensing server with SteamOS or have many options with Windows.

In Valve time, that's pretty quick, especailly for something that's quite different from all other stuff they've been involved with. I'm not looking to buy one, but I think it's good that the project is making progress.

I'm trying to but I can't understand what's the point of a Steam Machine (or living room PC for gaming). People looking for a cheap PC that runs games at a decent rate probably also want this very same PC for working, so what the point of having it attached to a TV anyway? If they are looking for a cheaper solution that can be used as a media center the resulting machine won't have enough power to properly play games?

I dunno. I really hope it succeeds but I ca see enough potential clients for this kind of product right now.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Plenty of people, my self included, have their PC plugged into their TV. Why wouldn't you? Nice big screen to view on from the comfort of a couch. I work from my laptop, my PC is built to game only.

I also don't understand what they're doing with the Steam Machine, but because they haven't made it simpler for the console crowd (whom often have apprehensions about the cost and complexity of PC gaming), and really are just another brand of expensive off-the-shelf PC's. There should be one box priced just over the consoles ready with Steam OS to plug and play - a console with Steam to gently introduce people to PC gaming.

Steam Machines may be aimed at "people that want a living room PC", but I'm willing to bet they will be more for "people that want a PC for gaming without having to learn about PCs".

Yeah, you can say that it's not that hard to learn about them, or you could easily get someone else to build you a PC, but I've seen a lot of console gamers say "nah" to both of those options. They'd rather just pick up a box, plug it in and play. Even though I don't need/want a "Steam Machine" myself, I can see the value in them from that perspective.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Which would be fine and dandy if Valve came out with one option, at a reasonable price ($500-600). I actually thought that was the point - essentially a Steam console - when they first announced it. Now the boxes range from hundreds to thousands of dollars, and are hardly more simple than any other pre-built PC brand.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well, some of them are in that price range, some cost more. The current "Steam Machines" are made by other PC manufacturers, not by Valve. Valve have yet to reveal their own one yet, which should be shown in March at GDC. I honestly think they're gonna end up being on the cheaper end, as Valve already know by now, price is one of the biggest selling points for anything.

I'm not interested in a steam machine. But I am very interested in the steam controller. I know it looks weird but I have high hopes for it. My hope is that it will bridge the gap between the precision of a mouse and keyboard with the comfort of a controller.

At the very least, I think we'll get to see Source 2 in action this year, but whether they'll have a game out with it remains to be seen. Valve time and all that jazz.

Half-Life 3 confirmed!

Oh to all the people here blathering about 'whats the point just buy a pc', you seriously underestimate how technically challenged the majority of people are including most gamers. Everyone posting regularly around here is a dork or nerd so it seems like its a given. lol

<< LINK REMOVED >> I'm gonna get one and I already have a beast PC.

1) It runs Linux I need to support Linux, more sales = more games coming to Linux = less need for Windows.

2) If it offers a cheap small form factor I need another device, one person can play on one TV another can play on the other, this removes the need for split screen.

3) Controller is unique would be cool to try it out but honestly that's what I'm least worried about.

4) Streaming games to the Steam machine, I can stream all the games off my nice PC to a Steam Machine to send it to living room, if someone wants to play some of my games in the living room I can let them while not giving them access to my PC. (I hope)

Steam should have launched the machines when they announced them last year. It would have been the perfect time. Instead it took forever to happen and impatient people bought Xbox Ones and PS4s. No one was willing to wait another near 2 years for these systems to come out.

I felt like Steam Machine's were DOA back when they were announced, but feel like they are dead even before arrival because of the way Valve handled everything since then. The demographic for these things is so small and the market will be so over-saturated that no one will make money except Valve.

I really like the idea of the power of a PC and the accessibility of a console, but the approach here is wrong.

Nice concept but with Steam OS (Linux) being limited to certain titles, it probably won't sell too strongly early on but when you install Windows and get it to start Steam big picture on boot up, it should be a good unit (should be able to play Origin games like FIFA too).

It is a good concept in theory except they aren't fully upgrade-able. Also, Steam OS isn't running all the Windows games so we have to throw another 100 bucks on top of already marked up hardware (pre-built and branded) for an OS that can run all the games.

IDK I'm just not too impressed by these yet.
