Steam machines are aimed at people who want hassle-free top-notch gaming experience and don't want or don't know how to build a PC and are willing to pay it for it handsomely.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> "willing to pay it for it handsomely." They're probably not idiots if they have enough money to do just that. I used to build computers and charge a half-day of work for what I earn in an hour now. So some people are not into PC building, have the money to pay to someone to do it and tend to concentrate on things that are more important/interesting to them.

Not that I would buy one of these, of course, as I enjoy building PCs, but the market for these devices is out there, albeit not so large.

I dunno, I just don't think it seems viable for a larger audience...I guess consumers will decide in the long run though.

And most have at least one copy of several of those games. Pretty sure I've gifted at least 5 copies of TL2 to people over the last couple years.

These are not the kinds of games that will make your average gamer buy one of these things. They're just not.

You need COD, FIFA, all of that shit. Not Dayz and chivalry if you're trying to make a dent in the market..

Watch Dogs on the other hand actually looks fun, and has a good level of story, and won't just be me and my pet running through fog of war for hours on end.

How about Chivalry, Red Orchestra 2 and DayZ standalone? IF you're going to pretend that you're a PC gamer yourself then you know the popularity of these game and how impossible they'd be on a console.

Watch Dogs is some generic AAA game with identical design to Assassin's Creed and Far Cry 3. Why? Because AAA games cannot take risks and hence cannot innovate.

Valve may think this'll be best aimed at current steam users. I still think its going to go head-to-head with consoles. Just look at the prices: 500 dollar steam machines are much more powerful than a 500 dollar Xbox One. Additionally, you get much more games at launch (Valve promises 400) Thats not enough for you? Fine, you an install windows and use the 'normal' stem library. Want mouse and keyboard? Fine, go ahead. Want to upgrade? Sure, thats also an option.

Whatmore, you get access to so many PC exclusives that consoles will never see.

At this point its clear, Steam Machine -> current gen consoles.

@gufberg Yeah most often though they are only PC exclusive because they either don't work well on a controller or they are shit. And from what I've seen of Civilisation V being played on the Steam controller, RTS is going to be uncomfortable to play for long durations compared to mouse and keyboard. If RTS doesn't transfer there isn't much else from what I can see other than Indies that will. Not something that is suddenly going to take the living room by a storm anyway.

I thought I'd made a good choice buying Witcher 1 on PC, it even made me like PC more. Then Witcher 2 got ported onto console and I realised that if a game is worth playing it will end up on console sooner or later.

You're obviously not the smartest of people. Look at the metacritic score of popular PC exclusives like Chivalry, Red Orchestra 2, Arma 3, Starcraft, Company of heroes 1 and 2, Civilization, Crusader Kings 2, Europa Universalis etc. They're all scored really high.

I realise its more comfortable for you to think that "Pc games are shit" its a way for you to feel like you're not missing out - even though you are.

Steam Machines isn’t about replacing your current gaming PCs. It isn’t about being directly competitive with consoles either.

The big picture will be creating a platform that accelerates the adoption of opensource APIs instead of Microsoft’s DirectX in mind that’ll pave the away for PC gaming beyond just Windows.

Less dependent on Windows is only good news for anyone who prefers other OSs other than Windows.

The success of Steam Machines will finally make it more worthwhile for PC manufacturers such as Nvidia and ATI to provide optimized drivers of their products to OSs outside of Windows.

This will allow gamers to game without having to buy Windows to do that well in the long run. Game developers can make games that will take account Windows and Unix-based systems from the start and justify that to stakeholders.

Right now, there’s little incentive to trade away the familiarity many game devs have of DirectX for OpenGL and other more open-source ways of building a game instead.

The Steam Controller, Steam OS, and Steam Machine is Valve’s way of helping with that. They obviously will earn new streams of revenue from gamers from other OSs who are now able to have a chance of getting the latest games without needing to buy Windows in order to do so.

Feedbackula-worthy I hope...

I'm starting to see a pattern here. The reason Microsoft and Sony don't make super powerful consoles with uber PC components? They would cost too much and no one will want to buy one. Especially since it has taken Microsoft and Sony years to accumulate the devoted developer base they currently have. When someone buys a $2000 Steam machine for the best graphics and realises no one develops on Linux they are going to be pissed.

@Dannystaples14 You are grossly misinformed why people don't develop for Linux.

It's because of DirectX, the market that Windows has had due to being the only major OS that has a huge market that catered to consumers AND the ability for people to rig their machines the way they want to (Apple doesn't of course).

As a result, Windows is where most games have been developed. Most of the market is Window users. People forget that maybe 12-15% is Apple's as far as OS share but neither Windows and Apple's OSs are used on the best computers in the world. Different flavors of Unix/Linux are used instead and are more efficient.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The $500 dollar ish ones above are either unknown in terms of performance or have an i5 in them of unknown speed. An i5 is quad core? The new consoles are 8 core? The new games will be optimised for 8 core, which means even if you have a decent quad in coming years I bet they start to struggle simply due to the fact they only have half the number of cores that the games are designed for.

So where are you looking because I don't see what you are talking about.

Besides with that god awefull controller the Steam Boxes are a notch lower than they would have been in my books before they even start.

And no - an 8 core CPU is not particularly expensive. If anything, its cheaper than a lot of 4-core CPUs. You can take a guess as to why.

example: I have an i5 3570k cpu which is a quad-core. That CPU is better in gaming than its AMD 8 core equivalent FX-8350. Why? Because no games utilize more than 2 cores and the i5 3570k, despite being a few years old, is miles bettter than the PS4/X1 CPU's. It blows them out of the water.

Stop talking out of your ass.

And give me one game in the world that used 8 cores? (correction:5) even latest games on ps4 and x1 don't use that much proven by the PC ports running better in graphics and speed and on quad cores.

Your logic does not really build up because u are applying human limits while totally neglecting that its electronics we are talking about and powered by electricity which eliminates that barrier but I'll play along.

In your concept again its 5 not 8 cores as we are talking about games here not OS unless ur into the OS more? anyway in your example lets say its 8 skinny people with no no muscles or u can imagine them fat but the other 4 are beefed up being faster (3.4ghz) and stronger (more voltage per core) now how does that play out?

If by your example i'll take u core to core:

4 bags 2 contestants A is normal and B is athletic, START.... A and B take a bag each, B delivers the bag while A is halfway there, A delivers and B is picking the 2nd bag, see what happened? now if it 8 vs 4 then its balanced but we are talking about 5 vs 4 and that 4 can take steroids too if they want (unpark and overclock)

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> What are you on about? A core is a core. The only difference is the processing on them. My point is consoles have 8 of them, they might be low power but there are still 8. 8 cores on PC are very expensive. So someone with a quad core, which is a lot of people but some have only just gone up to i3 or i5 which aren't great for modern games as it is. And will most definitely need one above 3GHz and possibly overclocked higher just to brute force their way through the games that are now optimised for 8 cores.

Just like if you try to do a job designed with 8 people in mind with only 4 people. All of the people are going to need to be able to do the job of 2 people i.e. be very powerful or they will have to double back on themselves which slows down the process.

Like lets say 8 lots of shopping, in bags are laid out in a line, where the goal is to get to the finish line at the end of a 1km route. 8 people could take one set each and walk to the finish line. 4 people would either need to be able to pick up 2 sets of bags each and walk or they would need to take one set then another set (if we imagine they teleport back to the start). That means a quad will have to be pretty beefy to keep up or it will just make tasks longer to carry out. Which will translate into crap frames or stuff like texture pop-in or some other bad looking crap.

PC components are powerful but how long before they start to feel the strain. If my experience with PC components has told me anything is that it won't be long before trainwreck, badly optimised games start to make themselves seen.

Read this to get what i mean, 1.65/1.75 ghz 8 cores with 3 locked out vs 3.4ghz 4 cores unlocked with room to OC up to 4.0ghz why do people keep comparing consoles to PCs like they are a beast of a system beats me.

The number of cores in a CPU do not decide its strength. The clock speed is much more important - especially given the fact that most games do not even utilize 2 cores at the moment. And no, games will not be supporting 8 cores within the next 5+ years. I can guarantee you that. An i5 quad core will handily beat the AMD cpu in the consoles.

I suggest you read more about CPUs. the buildapc subreddit is a good place to start.

console cores and heavily under clocked to save power or else u will see one of those big PSUs inside to juice it up along with the built in gfx chip if u do the math 8 core clocks of consoles are close to 4 core pc clocks, but even then consoles cores have some locked out from developers to power the system OS as for PC OS all are unlocked to run OS and anything else and with a tweak u can even unpark them for full usage from what i read 3 out of the 8 cores will be locked out from games and reserved to keep the OS and services running in the background so a 5 under clocked cores are not even close to full clocked 4 core.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Thats the misconception between gamers really, they think to game u need 2k PC but that's not the case these Cs u see here are mostly overkills and a quick cash grab to take advantage of the situation with the new OS. u can get a comp for as low as 500 same X1 price point and game really well if u get a 800-1k pc ur set for a very very long time just depends on ur budget u can spend more to get the best but remember u will make a killer savings on the actuall game prices as a trade off.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah you don't need a 2k PC but some people will think you do. Also I bet a lot of these boxes are more expensive than they otherwise would be, so you are paying more for less, simply because it was pre-built. I'd agree you can BUILD a good PC for less than 2k but buying one? Not quite so simple.

Too many models make it hard for consumers to decide what to get. Besides, if they're about the same or more expensive than a fine PC, what's the point to buy them. They can't be more expensive than the current generation consoles or they are prone to fail. Nevertheless, I wish Steam machine success so that we can all enjoy cheaper digital games and save much more space on the physical version of them.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Falcon Northwest make me drool so much. Alienware do in specs but those face plates the Falcon ones have are so nice. I think even if I won the lottery I'd be reluctant to ever buy a full Falcon Northwest PC because they are overly expensive and you pay for the name but they are very sexy.

I put all of the most expensive components they offer on their PC build thing one time and it came to £10,000. For £10,000 you could have ANY PC you wanted to build.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The Falcon Tiki's design and look has been out for a while though, I was hoping they'd shake things up in 2014... By all means it's going to be a well-built machine as always from Falcon Northwest.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it" seems to be their mindset...

@MJ-X @lozandier @Dannystaples14 I wouldn't 3 way SLI either, but to be honest to "future-proof" such an investment like getting that rig, and you're willing to pay that much anyway with 4K gaming to consider, you may buy it anyway.

I'm waiting for DDR4 and PCIe4 before I would consider building a high-end PC gaming with great value. It's coming too soon to not be skeptical of building a high-end gaming rig meant to last the next 3 years than normal.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Holy cow that's too much for a system. I mean if u look at the difference 3 way sli does not scale as much as 2 way sli from single card solution so in the end u end up paying a hell of a lot more fora very small performance gain /facepalm

and whats with full water loop its good and reduces comp temp n all but i can perfectly run 4ghz on air or on a cheap h80/h100 closed water loop cooling. as for a graphic card OC is useless as its only a 5-6 frames extra and not worth the entire water cooling cost. i dont know this marketing trend baffles me sometimes.

Gotta say most of them have no good design. Only Digital Storm -- Bolt II looks good. Zotac one looks interesting too.
