hmm now some of these are terrible they're weak and over priced for its cost and some are just ridiculous 6k for it what do they expect us to be playing on them 40 games at once? you can make the ultimate gaming pc for 5k and that includes 3 monitors screens and be future proof for 6 to 8 years. some of these are just crazy but im interested in

alienware (if its cheap enough)

Zotac if its a 8 core

all the others that are just quad cores wouldn be worth it and the more exspensive ones are just crazy priced, when comparing them with a ps4 or a xbone only 3 of them seems to be in the price range with better power then then and thats kinda the point of the steam machine.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah, most of these miss the mark by a wide margin. I'm wondering if they forgot that these are media machines that will be operating on a single television. Most TVs can't even keep up with the faster GPUs and have lower native resolutions, so they require far less oomph. My SteamBox/HTPC cost me $600.

I finally get it now. This isn't for the current long-time existing Steam Users nor the casual/hardcore console gamers.

This is for the newcomers - people from mid teens and on who are thinking of getting into PC gaming but don't know how to build a PC.

This is about the long term PC mainstreaming, not the short term.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Question makes zero sense. They are PCs. Made by existing PC shops from off the shelf PC parts. Several of them in off the shelf cases that have been on the market for years. Ironic user name?

Ok if you get one of these things, can you go to Best Buy (or where ever) and get a PC game to run on it? Or is it exclusively for games that are on Steam? Windows isn't the OS on this thing.

Its literally just a pre-built PC. You can do whatever you want with it.

So, they're just gaming PC's with modded cases.

<< LINK REMOVED >>Some of the cases are custom, most are not. And this is exactly what steam machines where announced as from the very start. Only reason people are confused are clickbait articles on blogs about a new from valve (literally no part of that sentence is true)

I think it's great - the more options for more types of gamers that are out there on the market, great! I will stick with my XBox One, because it - and it's peripherals - are in my price range.

Have fun!

<< LINK REMOVED >> If the Xbox One is in your price range then so are many of those Steamboxes, which are just as powerful as the Xbox One and you'll end up saving a ton of money on software because of Steam sales, humbe bundles and things like that.

I honestly don't get these steam machines. Wouldn't it be easier and more practical to buy or build a gaming pc for games, work, internet, social media, etc. and connect it to your tv? All you would have to do is dual boot with windows and steam os.

<< LINK REMOVED >> why dual boot? It'll be a decade before linux game support will be even close to comparable to windows support. And the back catalog will NEVER come over. Just pull hdmi from your gaming PC to your tv, use a wireless 360 controller and steam big picture mode in windows. Works much better than steam os and that will be the case for many years to come.

The Cyber Power, ibuy Power and Zotac Steam Machines are impressive mid range builds that can be compared to a PS4 in terms of hardware.Rest of them are as they say targeted towards Steam Users rather than console gamers willing to try PC gaming. But my best bet is that the Alienware version is over priced.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> From a commercial point of view, it MIGHT be good for Valve and PROBABLY WILL be good for hardware manufacturers (actually PC builders, all they manufacture is the case). For already established PC gamers such as myself, I think Steam machines will not bring anything good.

The Xbox and PS represent a strong competition to PC as a gaming platform and therefore we have all the goodies such as sales and Humble Bundles and stuff. Now imagine Xbox and PC slowly die out, lose the market share and PC (including Steam machines) takes the dominance - would you still be getting your discounts? I think not so much.

The main point is: PC gamers will probably not benefit too much except for some Xbox/PS exclusives switching to Steam in the future. Which does not justify the loss of perks we get by gaming on PCs.

I'd go for the Digital Storm - Bolt II. But I already have a Steam Machine. It's called my PC, that's plugged into my TV through HDMI, that I play with a 360 controller.

In other news, China just temporarily removed the ban on buying consoles from outside the country. Looks like a new market with a couple of billion buyers opened up to the video game industry!
