Now Playing: GS News Update: Valkyria Chronicles 4 Announced For PS4, Xbox One, And Switch

The next Valkyria Chronicles game has been announced. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is due out in Spring 2018 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, publisher Sega announced today.

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is set in the same timeline as the previous games, taking place in 1935 in the midst of a World War II-inspired battle between the Atlantic Federation and the Autocratic Eastern Imperial Alliance. "Although the Federation struggles valiantly against the Empire's forces, the relentless imperial military machine threatens to consume them," reads a line from Sega's press release. "With victory slipping away, the Federation executes Operation Northern Cross: a last-ditch attempt to capture the imperial capital and end the war. Commander Claude Wallace and his loyal childhood friends in Squad E are sent to fight for the desperate operation's success, but they will have to endure harsh bone-chilling elements, waves of imperial soldiers, and the terrifying Valkyria... and unravel a grave truth that will shake them to the core."

Valkyria Chronicles 4 is still a tactical RPG, and the art will look familiar in that Sega describes it as having a "vibrant and evocative art style that portrays a living canvas of watercolors..."

The game has all-new characters, including "young Commander Claude Wallace, engineer/heavy weapons extraordinaire Riley Miller, hotheaded Darcsen Raz, ice-cold ace sniper Kai Schulen, and more. Together, they will experience the painful realities of war..."

The combat in Valkyria Chronicles 4 is split between turn-based strategy, RPG, and third-person shooting. New for Valkyria Chronicles 4 is a new class, the Grenadier, along with more battleship support options.

Valkyria composer Hitoshi Sakimoto is coming back to again do the music for Valkyria Chronicles 4. A teaser website for the game has opened, but there isn't much on it. For now, you can check out the first trailer embedded above.

The Valkyria Chronicles series started in 2008 with Valkyria Chronicles for PlayStation 3, followed by a PSP sequel in 2010. The Japan-only Valkyria Chronicles 3 followed for PSP in 2011; it was not released in English, but fans took matters into their own hands.

Sadly monster hunter 2018 is the real jrp, why because it adopts Japanese inspired themes, character customisation, pets, well more like a jmmo fair to say.

But about time Xbox is getting Valkyrie chronicles (never played it, let's hope it's better then tales of vesparia being very low given I haven't played that either or sonata) version again.

Final fantasy 15, Revolution and this, wow jrpg are non existent on Xbox no really.

If I had to decide it would be dragon quest all the way(that games like dragon ball z jrpg) whole xenoblade for Nintendo switch the new one looks really bad. Compared to the previous.

Would love to play final fantasy world but not happening it seems.

Sega, for the love of God, make this as little like Valkyria Revolution and more like the amazing and original Valkyria Chronicles that fans still crave a true sequel to. Dont even bother going forward with this game if it in any way is like the crap Revolution ended up being. PLZ SEGA, you have the utmost potential to uphold & add another chapter to one of the best RPG/strategy franchises of the PS2 days! As a huge fan of Valkyria Chronicles, plz do it right and listen to your fans feedback instead of changing what made it so special!!

One of my favorite games was Valkyria Chronicles 1. Can't wait to get Valkyria 4!

Hope Atlus USA releases it with an option for Original Japanese Voices + English Subtitles (as well as a Dub).

@valgaav_219: Not really. They're not nearly as good as they were in the golden age.

@Barighm: That's your opinion. I've been seeing a lot of good JRPG's coming out and also a lot more coming in the near future. Next year should be a dope ass year just because of Ni No Kuni 2 and Dragon Quest XI alone.

Well, wasn't expecting that upon waking up this morning. But it's not a bad surprise. More Valkyria Chronicles is always welcome!

@alien-ouy: 2 and 3 were only on the PSP, and 3 only came out in Japan. You can still get 2 from the PSN store, though, at least in the US. It is playable on Vita as well as PSP.

@lower_case_dave: I through 2 come out for PS4 as well as 1 but 3 is missing.

The first game on PS3 was great, a real gem. To my shame however, I never finished it. I got stuck on a timed mission where you also had to be stealthy and avoid spotlights? Hopefully I'm not mixing that up with something else - long time since I played it.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@good_coop89: yea, that mission sucked. there were a few other missions that were overly difficult (unfairly) in vc1 that could have used some fine tuning. aside from those, the game was near perfect.

Personally, I'm skeptical simply because this is SEGA we're talking about and we have no idea as to what they can potentially end up doing to this game. If its releasing on PC, there's a good chance that it will be using Denovo...I mean, they did that for Sonic once and look where that lead to.

Oh, so they've learned their lesson from that piece of crap Revolution? Good.

Are you going to localize the game this time, Sega? We're still waiting for the third game.

@lembu90: It is localized by Atlus USA so its bound to be global. Plus there are already English texts on the trailer.

A remastered version of Valkyria Chronicles 2 & 3 (with English subs, to say the least) would be a perfect companion to this game. Come on, Sega!

Turn based with real time shooting? Sounds like Valkyria Chronicles i am afraid again

Avatar image for Xristophoros
Xristophoros

@sladakrobot: what? yes, the original 3 games in the series were turn based but with real time movement until your status bar was used up. what are you afraid of exactly? this game won't be like vc revolution which everyone despised.

Avatar image for sladakrobot
sladakrobot

@Xristophoros: i hope you are right but still i have concerns devs and publishers want to go away from tactical fights to action just to "please" the western audience...which goes mostly bad.

The trailer doesnt show any actuall gameplay sadly

Avatar image for deactivated-5a191f2c70ab1

@sladakrobot: Hey, there is always Dragon Quest 11 coming next year so you and i can get that tactical fix we want:)

Surprisingly unexpected. I really hope it's a true Chronicles game & doesn't have anything that carries over from the Revelations game. Bravo, Sega, bravo. Very nice Christmas present.

EDIT: Just watched trailer & I can barely contain my excitement. It's the real deal. I didn't think we'd ever get a true sequel to these games (especially since we didn't even get the third game). Okami, you're the only other IP that I thought we'd never get a sequel to (DS version doesn't count), sooo... Capcom, you have anything that YOU want to announce? Maybe reassembling Clover Studios....? Huuuh?

Avatar image for uncle5555

@twztid13: "Maybe reassembling Clover Studios"

You know as well as I do, they're called Platinum Games now.

And they did what they wanted to do with Okami, why do you think the game is so long for, they could have easily split it in two games but didn't. 1st game ends after the Orochi fight, 2nd game starts after that until the Ark at end game.

While it would have been nice to see a continuation of the series, we didn't get it, but honestly it is a complete game as far as I'm concerned and was a nice send-off for a studio gone too soon. Capcom was very short sighted when it came to closing them down back then.

Avatar image for twztid13
twztid13

@uncle5555: I wasn't insinuating that Okami wasn't a self contained experience, just that I want more of it. I loved long games when this was released, when I had more time it seemed, though it would never get released in its original form if it was created in this current climate.
