The Entertainment Software Association and the NPD Group have announced that the United States video game industry brought in $30.4 billion in revenue in 2016. This figure, which includes money from hardware, games, peripherals, and in-game items, is up from 2015's $30.2 billion.

According to the ESA, video game software sales jumped 6 percent in 2016 compared to 2015, coming in at $24.5 billion. This number includes physical games, mobile games, DLC, subscriptions, and "other revenue streams," and is up 23.2 percent from 2015. Digital full-game sales are apparently not included

"2016 was another enormous year for the interactive entertainment industry," ESA president Michael D. Gallagher said in a statement. "The industry's innovative genius and ability to engage and delight billions of gamers worldwide delivered another record performance. Congratulations to the developers, storytellers, creators, and investors who defined the leaderboard for entertainment."

The ESA represents the video game industry's interests in Washington and puts on the E3 show every year. Some of its many members include Activision, EA, Bethesda, Bethesda, Capcom, Microsoft, Nintendo, Take-Two, Ubisoft, and Warner Bros.

In other news about 2016 US sales, the NPD Group confirmed this week that Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was the best-selling game of the year. You can see the full Top 10 list here.

Gotta love these things......games sales rise yet on closer examination many games didn't do so well like Deus Ex and even the war games when compared to past entries.....

eww lets put out a blanket thing to say everything is fine.....NO IT ISN'T, gaming is going downhill.....I know I'm not alone in saying I barely bought anything in 2016 cus nothing was worth the asking price.....

How big is the gap between gaming and Hollywood now; like $10-15B?

As a lifelong gamer, I love that what was once a "cute little hobby for kids" in the 80s is now THE dominant entertainment industry world-wide.

"Digital full-game sales are apparently not included"

If the software figure does not include digital full game sales then it is grossly misleading.

With services like Steam and GoG so popular - not to mention things like game sales from each console's digital storefront - billions of dollars in software revenue is likely not being captured.

@BeefoTheBold: That's what I was going to say, full digital games are one of the main sources of income for the gaming industry. Why bother making all those stats if you're not going to include them... ffs...

@BeefoTheBold: Exactly. And this also doesn't include many world-wide sources. Gaming is an absolute juggernaut, and unlike Hollywood, there's always room for new entrants/indies who want to contribute something.
