US PC game charts: October 22-28
The Sims 2: Pets expansion takes the top spot on a list dominated by recent releases.
For the better part of 2006, the top spots on the PC game charts have been overrun with old games. Older games have been outpacing new releases on the charts all year long, led by 2004's perennial top 10 residents World of Warcraft and The Sims 2.
The year has also seen regular appearances by 2005's Age of Empires III and Civilization IV, as well as extended cameos by 2003's Warcraft III: Battlechest and SimCity 4: Deluxe Edition. Outside of the seemingly unstoppable Sims 2 and World of Warcraft, the best-selling games for the week of October 22-28 were not only all from 2006, but all from the month of October, according to figures from the NPD Group.
The top three spots for the week were claimed by a trio of October 17 releases. Electronic Arts' The Sims 2: Pets expansion pack took the top spot, with EA's futuristic shooter Battlefield 2142 taking the second spot and Microsoft's Flight Simulator X Deluxe landing in third place.
World of Warcraft fell no further than fourth place, followed by NCsoft's massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars Nightfall in fifth and LucasArts' Star Wars: Empire at War expansion Forces of Corruption in sixth place, both in their first week of release. The last new release for the week to make the charts, Vivendi's F.E.A.R. Extraction Point expansion pack, landed in ninth place.
