US PC Charts Feb. 8-14: Lich King conquers again

Second World of Warcraft expansion retains sales throne as Monolith's F.E.A.R. 2 debuts with a runner-up showing.

The NPD Group's weekly PC charts are typically stocked with the same usual suspects from one week to the next. However, for the February 8 - February 14 accounting period, Warner Bros. Interactive and Monolith disrupted that customary lineup. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin has scored the second slot in NPD's weekly recap of top-selling PC games. That feat was accomplished despite the paranormal shooter--released for the PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3--failing to capture critics in the same way as the 2004 original.

No Caption Provided

Aside from the F.E.A.R. 2 anomaly, the week's top-selling PC games fell into their customary slots. Blizzard Entertainment's World of Warcraft secured three positions, with the massively multiplayer online game's second expansion Wrath of the Lich King placing in the top spot. The WOW Battle Chest, which includes the original game and its first expansion, The Burning Crusade, scored fifth, whereas the stand-alone original secured the seventh slot.

EA's Sims franchise also dominated much of the PC chart. The Sims 2 Double Deluxe ranked third for the week, with The Sims 2 Deluxe finishing sixth and The Sims 2 Apartment Life coming in at 10. Also a Will Wright creation, EA's Spore took the fourth slot. Activision's Call of Duty: World at War placed eighth this week, whereas Bethesda Softworks' Fallout 3 landed the final position at ninth.

Week of February 8 – February 14, 2009
1) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
2) F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC)
3) The Sims 2 Double Deluxe (PC)
4) Spore (PC)
5) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (PC)
6) The Sims 2 Deluxe (PC)
7) World of Warcraft (PC)
8) Call of Duty: World at War (PC)
9) Fallout 3 (PC)
10) The Sims 2 Apartment Life (PC)

If we were only shown the sales NUMBERS as well as chart positions, then we'd see how sales are actually going down month on month and year on year, not up, and that's exactly why we're not given those numbers!

WAR although good just doesn't have the feel to it. WOW dominates in all areas you could think of in a MMORPG.

I agree with peyt. I bought AoC Varge. Played it earnestly for a week, on a machine that ran it easily at the top visual levels. Interesting for all of that week, and then the little things began cropping up. Badly finished menus, voice dialogue that wasn't any more entertaining than written dialogue, and frankly, just a lackluster approach to a game. The next week, I was back on WoW, and remembering why I stayed there. As far as WAR, I'd be willing to try it if I ever got a seven day trial. I've gotten gunshy on MMO's from buying such wonderfails as DDO: SR, LOTR: SoA, TR and AoC. Not gonna front another company my money till I get a good read of the game for myself

Sorry to hear that your wow experience was a negative one, Vargre666. Personally I tried WAR and found it lacking in many areas ranging from the general unfinished feel of the game's graphic engine to the hyper-inflated achievement/title system to the repetitive PvP system. I do not stick with WoW because of Marketing, I joined wow before advertising of any kind for the game was rampant. I do not stick with WoW because I care about my level 80 mage. While he is a part of me, I have left him to try other MMOs for sizable amounts of time. I do stick with WoW because of the uniquely high quality of the community and social aspects inside the game. I do stick with WoW because Blizzard continues to deliver new and intricate challenges, something that in retrospect was lacking strongly from the original game and The Burning Crusade. Obviously different gamers will enjoy different MMOs. I am glad to see WAR doing reasonably well in the market post-WoW. I also understand that many blame WoW for the slowdown in the modern MMO market. There is some truth to this, but it is just as likely that many of the recent MMOs would not have even been given a chance without WoW's success.

There is no reason why WOTLK doesn't deserve it's spot on that chart. Those charts may not include digital downloads but think about it. WOTLK sales will increase too no just the other games.

lol at the people who so passionately hate WoW. Do you not see that the people who hate it are just going along with what so many others say, just as much like sheep as how Vargre666 described WoW follower. I don't currently play WoW because I don't have the time to make spending money on it worth while (ie, I have a (busy) life), but I did like it when I played, and have also played other MMO's (including WAR) to compare it to. As for WAR, I'v played it and it's certainly not any better than WoW (just different), it has higher detail graphics but doesn't have it's own characteristic look, it's got a better combat system but it has to because it lacks any other features in the game at all, and other than that they're so similar it's funny. And both WoW and WAR make money the same way, that is they try to be addictive and easy to play, if you think WoW's like that and don't like it but play WAR then you'v been conned.

Sad to see that the sheep are still following the pack, but not surprising. WoW is a rotten mmo compared to AoC and WAR but people wont bother changing because 1) marketing and 2) people wont leave their lvl 70-80 characters because its such an investment. Even if other games are better, they wont give them a chance. I bought WoW the day it was released and admit that i enjoyed it a lot. But after switching to WAR theres no comparison. Graphics, game play, characters, races, theres no comparison. WAR blows WoW away hands down. And I think its a safe bet to say that everyone is going to be taken down a peg or two when Bioware releases their Star Wars MMO.

CamiKitten, The problem with taking WoW down a peg, is that whenever a new game comes out, that has some unknown feature, Blizzard, in a move of marketing genius, picks the feature apart, and then puts it into WoW. BUT, they don't just simulate what other companies do. They hammer and hammer on something, so that it fits WoW. The only way someone's gonna topple WoW, is by reinventing the MMOG, in the same way that Everquest and Ultimate Online, first reinvented the RPG. So far, the only thing I could think, would be to combine a game like CoD: MW and all it's graphical goodness, with a true MMO experience(Planetside fans need not respond :-) ) The ability to fly and fight in a real ground war, that's more than just mods and enhancements.

I really wish some company would put WoW in it's place. It's really time for them to step down. I mean, the game is rediculously easy and that's why everyone likes it.

Great to see WoW doing so well still. It's still a great game. I can only IMAGINE how many units WoW has sold through digital download since it's easy to download BC and WotLK from the WoW website. No telling how many they have sold that way.

Not just Steam, but other download sales like Direct2Drive, GameTap, and Good Old Games needs to be counted in charts. These online services continue to grow.

This chart simply reaffirms it - 2008 was a terrible year for the gaming industry. There's no sigh long enough to express this.

I wonder how much the circuit city liquidation has impacted PC sales the past couple weeks. All of these titles were available in plenty when I went there recently. Too bad NPD isn't going to track steam numbers. I know personally I'll only buy at retail again if I really want the collectors edition. Steam has become such an amazing service.

@mrnib you don't see it there because they probably bought it on steam, especially considering how last week it was 50% off. it has sold a ridiculous amount on steam as welll as many other games and its stupid that the npd doesn't count it in. aside from wow and the sims, eveyr game on there is sold on steam.

NPD is no longer a reputable group seeing as they don't count digital purchases as others have stated. I bet ActiBliz enjoys the outdated system though. Sad year for the PC if **** games like WoW, CoD:WaW, and Sims 2 are still up in the rankings even with the outdated system.

Holy crap. Many years later, WoW is still in the top 10, and beating out the likes of Fallout 3 and the latest Call of Duty (which both even started on the PC). That's wild.

@TWiSTEDmerc "It all means that it's virtually impossible for a small company to be recognized for its work" Valve is a small company... need I say more? Oh and EA is just the publisher (boxing, shipping) for valve games not the developer.

WOW!!! Lich King sold best, I didn't see that one coming that's a real right fielder. You wanna see the PC crashing, it's right here; 6/10 of the top 10 sellers come from just 2 big series and the others are either from long running series or fairly well known IPs. It all means that it's virtually impossible for a small company to be recognized for its work (because nobody buys it), so they move onto consoles where only a few series haven't devoured the install base.
