US PC Charts Feb. 15-21: Dawn of War II drops the Warhammer

THQ's RTS ousts Blizzard's Wrath of the Lich King as the period's top PC performer; F.E.A.R. 2 falls to seven.

For the week of February 15-February 21, Warhammer toppled World of Warcraft from the lead position on the NPD Group's weekly PC sales charts. Massively multiplayer online gaming fans need not worry about Blizzard Entertainment's continued dominance in the genre, though, because it was THQ's real-time strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II that scored the win over WOW: Wrath of the Lich King, not Mythic Entertainment's fantasy-themed MMOG.

Dawn of War II was the only new game to crack NPD's recap, with the remainder of the chart toppers mostly falling in line with the week before. EA's Sims 2 Double Deluxe and Sims 2 Deluxe outpaced Spore during the period, placing a respective third, fourth, and fifth. With Wrath of the Lich King in second, the WOW: Battle Chest--which contains both the original game and its first expansion, Burning Crusade--and WOW proper placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

The bottom of the week's top 10 saw the most substantive change, with Monolith and Warner Bros. Interactive's F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin falling from its debut in second position to seven. That game was followed by The Sims 2 Apartment Life, and Crytek's Crysis Warhead hung on to the 10th slot.

Week of February 8 – February 14, 2009*
1) Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II (PC)
2) World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King (PC)
3) The Sims 2 Double Deluxe (PC)
4) The Sims 2 Deluxe (PC)
5) Spore (PC)
6) World of Warcraft: Battle Chest (PC)
7) World of Warcraft (PC)
8) F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin (PC)
9) The Sims 2 Apartment Life (PC)
10) Crysis Warhead (PC)

* The above chart reflects the NPD Group's sales data drawn from a cross-sampling of retailers nationwide. As such, it does not include game sales through nontraditional channels such as digital distribution.

Yeaaah Dawn of war II !!!! such an amazing game!

Avatar image for K_M82

no surprise there. relic and massive entertainment are some really great developer and they're not afraid to shake up the RTS formula, same goes to stardock. hope they continue to make good game in the future!

I blame both console and piracy for fear 2, cause I love the game on PC..which I paid my good money for their good effort for. It`s a great game, but they seem to be bouncing against the cieling as to what to do next. I say end it with the next sequel, and think of something else.

I think the Tyranids will eventually consume all the games on this list...

All I can say is WoW!! I'm really glad that DoW 2 is selling well, because it really is an incredible game, but it is depressing how much people still like The Sims...

Avatar image for Mr_Versipellis

It makes me cry how many Sims 2 games tghere are in this list...

Crysis Warhead sells well. FEAR2 isn't as high as thought but at least it's in the top 10. To be honest, a consolized game like FEAR definitely doesn't deserve to be higher. The PC exclusive FEAR (when it was exclusive) was so incredible. It's a shame they went the way they did with FEAR2. I did buy it and I enjoy it but it's not as good as the first. Like someone said earlier, they'll blame piracy. It seems to be the scapegoat nowadays despite many other PC games selling multi million copies (Crysis included). It's too bad this doesn't include Steam or Direct2Drive or any of those.

FEAR 2 didn't even make the top 5 for an opening game. Monolith take note, never consolize and destroy your own franchise. You brought this on yourself. I'm sure they'll probably blame piracy when this game tanks on the pc. I'm glad Crysis is still in the top 10 for a game that several months old.

DoW II is just an awesome game and im glad it beat WoW at the No.1 spot

Avatar image for Starsailor_IT

it's a pretty depressing chart. Crysis only 10th, and it's the cheapest game in the list. anyway the poll refers to retailers only, so I guess it doesn't include online-only shops.

Make love, not Sims :-/

Digging DOWII a lot. Baseless RTS FTW!!

Avatar image for brain20035

I wonder how many people haven't bought the sims 2 yet!! I mean it's on the top 10 every freaking week!!

where is Warhammer online :o, people should start playing warhammer online instead of WoW ;)

Avatar image for REd_toe

@ tommyb21 those are not SALES.

Avatar image for msudude211

Wow, WoW was still number 2. :o

Avatar image for tommyb21

Lol, too bad they dont take into account .torrent downloads.

Avatar image for invictuslemming

This is actually very impressive, considering it does not take in account DoW's steam distribution sales. Add the steam sales into this figure and it might actually hold the top spot for quite some time.

F.E.A.R 2 is amazing I WANT IT!

Avatar image for HellJumper

DOW2 multiplayer is amazing, and I cannot wait for expansions and new stuff

Avatar image for smbius

DoW2 is a good looking game

Avatar image for k0r3aN_pR1d3

Does the Sim 2 Double Deluxe have double the gayness compared to the Deluxe edition? I cannot fathom myself wasting time on virtual characters with their social interactions. I have MySpace for that.

Avatar image for johnny27

god for relic dawn of war II is a great game and it deserves all these sales and crysis warhead is on there man that game has sold alot of copies  hopefully crytek will be happy this time around :P

Avatar image for shalashaska88

People are still buying Sims 2....must be those who are unaware that the third game is due this year. Pity.

Avatar image for daabulls23

I bet Empire:Total War will be there next week.

Avatar image for jallu2

awesome! that pretty much guarantees DOWII expansions

Avatar image for VenomRitual

the really got to start adding steam. i mean if itunes and amazon is counted on music sales, why isn't digital counted too? even gamestop sales them digitally. this is why you don't see COD or L4D on the list.

Avatar image for andrew_ribbons

Horray! DoW2 definitely deserves this :3

Avatar image for JeansForever

lol, who the hell buys Spore and sims? mothers who are angry with their children?

Avatar image for deactivated-57af49c27f4e8

wth people!? who is buying sims 2 and spore still? rrrgh i hate to see ea make any money. oh well, a good game makes it to the top of the list :)

Avatar image for DontEatCream

What? WoW isn't number one for a change? There is a god.

For the love of God PLEASE people stop buying Spore and the sims

It's 2009: I want *all* PC game data, not just retail. Include Steam, Direct2Drive, and other download sales. Since January I have picked up about 10 new PC games in total, and only one of them came from a retail store. All others were via download service. Welcome to 2009 NPD, where the bits are digital and the intartubes are filled with LOLcats. I can has proper datas?

Avatar image for dgsag

Avatar image for vortex_gw

WH40k: DoW2 *does the dance of victory* No enemy can stand before our blades!
