Unlike Microsoft, Sony Is Intent On Having PS5-Only Games Right Away

Despite Microsoft's approach to supporting exclusives across two generations, Sony will not be doing the same.

Sony is not planning for upcoming exclusives to run across both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, according to PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.Biz, Ryan was asked whether Sony is planning on a strategy similar to Microsoft with regards to supporting exclusives across two generations of hardware. Ryan explains that Sony has always believed in generations, and that software should represent that new capabilities of new hardware. As such, Sony is not planning to make upcoming PS5 games compatible with the PS4, with Ryan saying that Sony plans to deliver software that can only be enjoyed on its new console.

"We do believe in generations, and whether it's the DualSense controller, whether it's the 3D audio, whether it's the multiple ways that the SSD can be used... we are thinking that it is time to give the PlayStation community something new, something different, that can really only be enjoyed on PS5," Ryan concluded.

Microsoft is taking a different approach, with the company declaring that its exclusives during the first two years of the Xbox Series X will run on the Xbox One as well. It's not the only point of deviation either, with a report claiming that Sony is putting the responsibility of backwards-compatibility in the hands of developers, and not enhancing its titles with system-level features like Microsoft is on the Xbox Series X.

We're scheduled to learn more about the PS5 very soon, with Sony hosting a digital event on June 4. We already know about the PS5's hardware and new controller, so Sony is expected to start showing off games for the console at the event too.

So basically what they are saying:

Microsoft: Releasing a brand new console with games that won't take advantage of the console except for graphics for a while.

Sony: Releasing a brand new console where games will be able to take full advantage of the console because they won't have to worry about their gameplay features not working on the PS4.

And for those saying the PC can do it, It really can't. There's only so far you can downgrade graphics and other items until an old PC can't handle the gameplay elements and other aspects of the game that you can't downgrade without changing how the game plays. It's the reason games on the PC have a minimum spec. Below that, the game might not work.

@nedrith: Most of the game for the first 12 months or so will normally have been designed to run on the PS4 anyway because most of them would have been in development before the PS5 specs were finalised.

Sony probably have 1 or 2 first party studios working on a game to take advantage of the PS5 simply to "wow" you into buying one at launch but for most of the other games, they likely would have worked fine on PS4 and will be simply up-scaled a bit with Sony whacking a PS5 exclusive badge on it because they want to force it.

This happens almost every generation, it takes a few years before you start to see games that actually take advantage of next gen technology because most of the games before that were in development using previous gen technology or theorised final specs for the next gen consoles. Most launch games look rather shitty 2 or 3 years later because of that.

Really the only difference here between previous generations is Microsoft saying they aren't going to arbitrarily limit cross-gen games to the newest console to force sales.

Wonder how the Xshoe box will handle Sony's titans like TLOU2, Ghost of Tsushima, Bloodborne 2, Horizon Zero Dawn 2 and God of war 2, just to mention some.

Dead on arrival as always.

@Tidus1012: 1 genre. That about sums it all up. All 3rd person action adventure rpgs getting you to kill numerous npcs, upgrading weapons and armour and repeatedly trying to kill bullet sponge bosses...not one mp game, not one fps.

Add to that Spiderman, Uncharted, Days Gone, the DHL game with babies...all similar, all with little to no replayability....and with only 2 that have a release date after years of delays.

Impressive.

PS5 only games is stupid right now. Then again i doubt there will be anything worthwhile for PS5. Most people buying PS5s will do so to play games like Ghost and TLOU2 in better forms

Are you fluffing kidding me? Translation, nothing for you guys for free!!!! PC's can do it & XB can do it, but not for you long time supporters who have given us millions for your games....we are not taking the extra few hours downgrading resolutions for you guys! Rebuy all your games bee atches as we are making you rebuy them again on PS5!

Sony Pony's love to get kicked in the rear end, I mean really Sony can have inferior console power, abysmal backwards compatibility on PS5, a dreary MULTI-PLAYER exclusive library and fanboys continue to bend.

What, you want to play PS2 & PS3 games that you spent hundreds of dollars on??? Well PAY US MORE dammit & play it on PS NOW! We can't bring you legacy games on PS4, but we can do it magically on PS NOW where you can pay us indefinitely! MS does not hold their legacy games hostage on their subscription service as you can buy them to own forever too! Don't gimme any of that BS either "Backward compatibility is not important to me," we will see about that when you want to replay GOW & Spiderman at better resolutions & higher frame rates. Tell that to all the switch owners who are getting inferior ports of some legacy games now! Tell that to the MILLIONS of people who buy mini-classic consoles & games, all the legacy game collections & remasters that are being pumped out! XBsX gives us free remasters for many of our 3,000+++ backwards compatible games and you cannot beat that value....all free!!!!!!

Death Stranding is the most boring open world game that I had to drag myself to play & I just could not do it anymore....sold! I much rather play Crackdown 3 with my friends & I have much more fun than Death Stranding! Ghost of Tsushima looks good, but has some quirky graphics at times (like bouncy trees/bushes) & the gameplay looks boring as hell, Bright Memory Infinite has much better gameplay & maybe even graphics! GoT looks like it is 2 years too late to be a wow factor now!

I can beat a Sony one & done exclusive in 3-4 days & then it is hard to play it again, but I can play Gears, Halo, Titanfalls, State of Decay 2, Forza, Sea of Thieves & even Crackdown 3 over & over again, because most have campaigns & MULTI-PLAYER fun that I play with my friends for months and years on end!

This is the final straw for me from Sony & now I may buy it at the end of next gen or not even at all! I don't like getting jerked around like that by a company! The XB narration only gets better & better by the day & Sony just takes a dump on their customers!!! I had it!!!!

@just1mohr: halo. forza. titanfall good games? News to me I played each of them about 2 minutes before immediately deleting them. Bloodborne I got a few weeks out(sure like to see you "finish" bloodborne in 4 days) of I will admit most other ps exclusives are garbage but ALL xbox exclusives are.

And you forget to mention the hundreds of VR games. Resident evil, skyrim, borderlands in VR better then all the exclusives on either system.

I would rather one new game that is good then be able to play every console game ever made on my ps5 for free. I mean i still have like every system anyway if I want to play a game. Heck I even bought a wiiu just to play xenoblade and Zelda. And there is the console with REAL exclusives. Just too bad nintendos systems are cheap pieces of garbage.

@just1mohr: "PC's can do it & XB can do it". Really? So PCs don't have minimum specs and my 8 year old never been upgraded PC can play ALL of the newest games out there. I doubt it.

"I can beat a Sony one & done exclusive in 3-4 days & then it is hard to play it again, but I can play Gears, Halo, Titanfalls, State of Decay 2, Forza, Sea of Thieves & even Crackdown 3 over & over again, because most have campaigns & MULTI-PLAYER fun that I play with my friends for months and years on end!" Great that's you. I tried Titanfall, didn't enjoy the MP. Halo's campaign was fun, don't really have a desire to replay any of them though and the MP isn't that great for me. Horizon Zero Dawn? Beat it 3 times. Might beat it a fourth time when HZD 2 comes out. A great game is replayable even in singleplayer. However you should know that different people have different tastes. You listed Sea of Thieves as a game that you can play over and over again. The game has a 67 metacritic and a 4.2 user review. Quite literally the only good exclusives in your list are generally Gears Halo and Forza. Titanfall 2 is on the PS4.

"This is the final straw for me from Sony & now I may buy it at the end of next gen or not even at all! I don't like getting jerked around like that by a company! The XB narration only gets better & better by the day & Sony just takes a dump on their customers!!! I had it!!!!" I bought a X360 first during that gen. A few great exclusive games and then they stopped coming. Bought a PS3 and the great games kept coming. This gen I haven't even touched the X1, most of the games aren't that great for me and the few that I might enjoy have either came to the PS4, are on the PC with the remaining not being worth buying a console over. Unless MS's next console actually comes with some good games I'll stick with a PS5. Because Sony gets it. They get that their customers are buying a game console for the games.

@just1mohr: You misunderstand. A PS4 game will (supposedly) get boosted on the PS5, but a PS5 game will not be downgraded to work on the PS4. You will not have to rebuy your PS4 titles on the PS5. And you're deluded if you actually think MS will give you all of that for free.

That said, keep complaining. It's not the first time Sony has changed their minds.

And if you're mentioning games like State of Decay, Sea of Thieves, and Crackdown 3 like they're actually games worth replaying than you must be a shill. Even the most hardcore Xbots around here roll their eyes at Sea of Thieves.

This is microsoft problem. They lost the current generation because of shitty first party games, not there is a more than likely chance they'll lose the next gen battle too. They need to wake up to this.

I stick the blame entirely where it belongs... With Phil!

@j3diknightdave: Absolutely. It's something MS supporters forget. A lot of us buy our consoles based on the game we can play. I've bought Playstation consoles because of great exclusives. I bought a 360 before a PS3 for games like Lost odyssey and Tales of Vesperia and then decided that was a mistake. I've bought a PS4 and haven't touched the X1 because there's no game that really says I must have it on the X1 or enough games to even convince me that buying it is worth it.

I don't mind that. Its a good thing i feel we can truly see the capability of the next gen like this. Specially with the exclusives.

@saadred: Except you're not going to see the true capabilities of the PS5 in Year 1 (or even Year 2). I doubt any of the first wave of PS5 exclusives will be anything that couldn't be done on the PS4. Same thing goes for the Xbox Series X. But Microsoft realizes this and while their 1st party studios are surely working on exclusives, those games won't be ready in the first few years of the next console gen. M$'s strategy isn't as crazy as it may initially look to be.

@saadred: Still, I'd like to see Sony do SOMETHING to suggest they're actually trying to compete with MS rather than seemingly sitting back on their haunches and giving us more of the same. I mean, all they would have to do is rollout that PS1 and 2 BC THAT WE KNOW THEY HAVE and that would stop MS in their tracks. No matter how much BC MS promises, it can't compete in the slightest with the PS1 and 2 library (well, the original Xbox library was damn good).

@barsaf: No, you're going to drop $500 for PS5 exclusive games that are basically PS4 games with better load times. I've accepted this fact and thus will not be disappointed when I get my PS5 on launch day.

@barsaf: I've got a rather decent sized library of PS1 and PS2 games. The PS1 memory cards have long since died as have the PS2's, and the PS2 itself is dead (my PS2, not the console as a whole), so being able to pop those into my PS5 and play them again would be grand. Especially the original versions of Disgaea 1 and 2 that have the cool songs and not the crappy remastered tracks NISA stuck us with (not to mention missing Invasion from Within entirely).

All of my Wild Arms games would be playable again too. If it's one genre where the PS1 and PS2 shine, it's RPGs.

@squishytia: Yeah. The Suikoden and Megami Tensi games that I have from the PS1/PS2 gen are among my most treasured games. I'd love to be able to play them on the PS5. The PS2 alone has SO MANY great games.
