Uncharted Without Naughty Dog Would Be a Difficult Step to Make, Says PlayStation Exec

Jim Ryan responds to discussions that Uncharted 4 may be Naughty Dog's last entry.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president Jim Ryan has addressed whether the Uncharted series could continue without Naughty Dog, which has developed every mainline entry so far.

"[Uncharted is] an IP that's very closely tied to that developer. That's all I'll say," Ryan told Eurogamer at Paris Games Week. "It's something that's very special to us, and I think much of that specialness relates to the association between the franchise and [Naughty Dog]. It'd be a difficult step to break that association."

Naughty Dog has repeatedly made statements suggesting Uncharted 4: A Thief's End will be the last game in the series it develops. Although the studio hasn't unequivocally said it will not be involved in future titles, there have been discussions about series going forward, prompting Ryan's statements.

In October 2015, co-director Neil Druckmann said Uncharted 4 represents the "end of an era" for Naughty Dog as a studio.

"We get more and more that feeling of this definitely [being] the end of an era for us as a studio," he said. "We've been with this franchise for almost ten years now from inception all the way to this point. Luckily, we don't get too much time to dwell on that feeling because we're so busy, but every once in a while... you know?"

Before that, lead designer Kurt Margenau indicated Uncharted 4 may be the final entry in the series to star Nathan Drake: "We are fulfilling that vision and it's going to be awesome. It's Nathan Drake's final chapter, so I think fans are going to be happy."

Sony would certainly have good cause to continue the series, as Uncharted is a tentpole franchise for the company. It has also reached more than 21 million copies sold to date and a movie based on the games is in development.

It has been speculated that Naughty Dog may return to The Last of Us for a follow-up, given the critical and commercial success of the first game. Nolan North, who voices Drake in Uncharted and a character in the Last of Us, has said a sequel is in the works.

Following North's statements, Druckmann clarified that a prototype for The Last of Us 2 was made, but the sequel is not currently in development.

"When Bruce (Straley, co-director) and I moved over to Uncharted 4, we were brainstorming ideas for The Last of Us 2 with characters; ideas for TLOU 2 with Joel and Ellie; ideas for a sci-fi game; ideas for a fantasy game, and building prototypes for each one of those ideas," he explained.

"So, I guess [Nolan North] was kind of right in that we were working on stuff, but we don't know what we're doing next and we won't know until probably a few months after we finish Uncharted 4."

Sony has confirmed the Uncharted 4: A Thief's End release date as March 18, 2016. A multiplayer beta for Uncharted 4 will launch on December 4.

Sony should set up a studio like MS did for Halo, Gears & Forza and let their focus be on Uncharted games while NG make TLOU 2 or create new ip

What a lousy news article. It repeats what has already been said and known.

This will be the last Uncharted game from ND, but Sony is definitely going to keep the IP alive at another studio.

It would be like 343 taking over the Halo franchise. They will suck the heart out of it and leave a soulless, run of the mill game with not a shred of magic left that made the franchise what it was. It will still sell and fanboys will still defend it because of the brand.

so how is this news? an article about what a game would be if the developer DID NOT make it and someone else did is not news. you can post that about any game ever. or any music or any movie 'what if x game or movie was done by someone else".

I probably wouldn't buy it if Naughty Dog didn't make it. Thats like going to China and trying to buy an iPod off the street.

Why does this need to be discussed? Why is it so unnerving and questionable to studios when they just want a saga to end? Not every single story needs to be turned into a massive franchise spanning 30+ years across six different platforms.

Endings are good. They make the stories complete. Not everything needs a f'ing encore of pseudo-sequels and spinoffs. I'm glad Naughty Dog is moving on after this. End the series strong and leave it be.

@Xirtahm: "Why does this need to be discussed?" Might be the most ignorant thing ever said. You must be a delusional fanBOY. Why would people want to discuss the cancellation of their favorite series? Did you really write that? Sony owns your soul. (brain)

@vegasgamerdawg: Yes, what on earth was I thinking. Uncharted should be milked for every dime it's worth until it's driven into the ground.

Troll or not, just shut up.

@Xirtahm: Don't think Vegas really understood what you meant.

Xir is saying that these corps need to start ending the stories they tell, you can never have closure on a story that gets dragged out forever. This is what gaming publishers suffer from, over-extended games. I could name about 20 game series that have this issue.

I'm all for games having a real ending.

TO BE CONTINUED...

Having an end is a good thing. Also, they could make a new one in several years once they can do things that can't be done now like Ninja Gaiden did on Xbox. Maybe Uncharted VR or something.

It's okay to let a series end. Uncharted is a great series of games but every game needs to have it's time so that new IP's can be created. Look at Assassin's Creed! That series should have an end but they won't let it die and have its peace in the afterlife. Naughty Dog can go on to make bigger and better games. Let Uncharted die in peace. Game companies should be making huge games that last not small games that need a new release every year. I hope uncharted lasts longer than a year so people aren't calling for a new one so soon. i played Uncharted 2 for years!

Naughty Dog is setting gaming standards with every game they put out recently. So no, I doubt any other company could keep the quality of the game when taking over. But they could probably make a casual, normal tomb raider-ish type of game that people would continue to enjoy.

@livedreamplay: "But they could probably make a casual, normal tomb raider-ish type of game that people would continue to enjoy". You're joking right? Hate to break it to you, but umm, Uncharted is as casual as it gets, guy. Why do you think it's so popular? LOL.
