Uncharted Series Reaches 21 Million Units Sold

New sales milestone announced alongside confirmation of The Nathan Drake Collection.

Naughty Dog's action-adventure Uncharted series, which debuted in 2007, has now sold more than 21 million copies, the developer revealed on Thursday. The new sales milestone was divulged as part of Sony's announcement of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, a PlayStation 4 bundle due this year.

The Uncharted franchise has spanned three core releases so far, beginning with Uncharted: Drake's Fortune in 2007. A sequel, Among Thieves, was released in 2009. Drake's Deception, the third entry in the main franchise, was released in 2011.

PlayStation Vita games Golden Abyss and Fight for Fortune launched in 2012.

The next entry in the series is The Nathan Drake Collection, due this October, which will be followed by Uncharted 4: A Thief's End in 2016.

That's ind of Low compared to Halo. Halo Lifetime sales in total have reached over 60 million on Xbox alone. Microsoft said this over a year ago believe but UC sales are still good I guess.

If I remember correctly to, didn't Gears of war surpass the same amount as UC ?

Avatar image for skrilla99

That makes GTA V numbers look even more impressive and in a much shorter time period.

I know right, sadly though although GTA V sold impressively, it was still a big disappoint and let down for me!

Avatar image for rarerichz

that is nothing , super mario bros wii sold twice the amount that sold and that is only one of nintendos highest selling games on wii. im not even going to talk about mario kart wii.

Being an Xbox owner, I haven't played any of these games. I know they're quite popular, but how does this series differ from Tomb Raider? How is it better, worse, or different?

Avatar image for jmartin1016

@MichaeltheCM: Tomb Raider has better gun play, Uncharted has better characters. Tomb Raider is way more violent. Uncharted is way more charming.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@jmartin1016: i would agree to that and also add that uncharted has a far better story on the whole in comparison to tomb raider. the set pieces in uncharted are on a whole other level to be sure. both are great, though, and have their strengths and weaknesses.

Amoung Thieves helped the series in a big way.

Wonder what Little Big Planet is at in sales? Or has Kart & LBP3 killed the whole franchise? .

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@RSM-HQ: good question... little big planet 3 came and went with little fanfare. i think people are burnt out on the franchise. don't forget the vita entry as well... that makes 5 in the series already. fairly certain media molecule is working on a vr game for sony.

Great franchise, but I hope this is the last Uncharted game for some time. Let the franchise rest until the PS5. I really want to see ND do something different, but at this point we will not see a new franchise until some time after the release of TLoU2. So something new from them may be the PS4's swan song.

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@bubba_1988: agreed. some franchises deserve to be retired with respect when the time is right and after the story has been told to a proper conclusion. uncharted and metal gear solid are such franchises.

Avatar image for Lunastra78

Don't feel the need to play them again myself, but this is great for all those ex-XBoxers who left for greener pastures this gen ;)

Avatar image for dockgamer36

@Lunastra78: greener pastures the ps4 is far from greener this year looks more like a barren waste land.

Well deserved. When it comes to action adventure, Uncharted and God of War are among my top favorite games.

The more money Naughty Dog earns, the better. These guys make high quality games, left and right. Can't wait for their future projects, Uncharted 4 included.

Gears of war passed 22 million over a year ago. Just saying.

Avatar image for ConnorAztecHaye

@streetsmarts13: there have been 4 main releases of Gears, so of course they'd be ahead.

Avatar image for sandman338

@ConnorAztecHaye: And there are 5 uncharted games, so what's your point?

Avatar image for ConnorAztecHaye

@sandman338: lol I said maon releases - golden abyss was a secondary release. And fight for fortune is deffinetly not a main or secondary launch, tigether they would've sold 2 mill at most.

So fairly even between uncharted and gears.

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

@sandman338: Four Uncharted games, poor logic.

Uncharted, Uncharted 2, Uncharted GA (Vita), Uncharted 3.

You can't count a game still in development. Otherwise we could do the same for Gears.

i just got done playing 1-3 a few months ago, and its a shame i took so long to do it.

Avatar image for BelaidKL

Comes out at a bad time for me, with all the winter games scheduled around then... That being said, looking forward to playing it eventually

Imagine the download size for this collection.. I remember Uncharted 3 was like 40 gigs.

Not bad at all, good for ND.

Drake seems exhausted on that thumbnail. Maybe they should stop milking him and make a new Crash Bandicoot next?

Avatar image for RSM-HQ

@Tiwill44: Nathan Drake always looked like a mess, how have you only just noticed?

Avatar image for Xristophoros

@Tiwill44: keeping up with your sony tr0lling for the day? if drake is tired, can you imagine what mario is feeling? not even a vacation would be enough at this point. he himself wants to rest in peace for eternity :D

Avatar image for Tiwill44

@Xristophoros: I haven't seen Mario in a while tbh, if anything Pokemon is being milked way harder.

Besides, Mario doesn't need a vacation, he frequently takes breaks from jumping on goombas to play sports, go party or race in a kart. If only Drake did the same, the poor guy must be getting sick of killing people.

Avatar image for lostn

@Tiwill44: They're taking a leaf out of Master Chief's book.

Avatar image for RicanV

@Tiwill44: Crash is owned by Activision.

Edit: I would love for Crash to make a surprise appearance at E3 but Sony would need to free him from his Actiprison with loads of cash.

Avatar image for bubba_1988

@RicanV: If Sony every got Crash back it would most likely be outsourced to some B studio. But could you imagine if one of ND's teams actually was given free reign to make an updated Crash game?

Avatar image for Tiwill44

@RicanV: Well, maybe they can use the 'loads of cash' they're getting from PS+ and all these remasters to do that. Hopefully we're not getting Knack 2 instead...

Avatar image for Jimbowesker

And its well deserved. Uncharted reached new heights not yet reached by consoles, in terms of awesome story driven gameplay delved wiith the most beautiful and stunning graphics seen yet. Naughty Dog deserves all the praise they get for Uncharted 1-3 (4) & for the groundbreaking hit The Last of Us. My one question is, Is the Nathan Drake Collection going to be sort of like a remastered HD since Uncharted 1-3 released on PS3, I'm assuming PS4 will be the console it will be going to??

Avatar image for deactivated-5a30e101a977c

@Jimbowesker: Yes it will.

But did you really like UC3? I thought it was overrated, UC2 was great.

Avatar image for Jimbowesker

###@FastRobby: Oh yes I 100% agree. UC1 was more of an average type of adventure, showing glimpses ofgreatness ut but failing to ever achieve it Still, a fun game and not bad at all for a start. Then UC2 came along and completely blew everyones socks off. It achieved thingsthought impossible on the PS3 and quite honestly, ingaming at the time, and it blended Quick Time Events in so smoothly with thegameplay. Amazing story, amazing cast, beautiful scenery & environments, just an epic 10/10 star game. However, I also believe thst because of this UC3 was doomed from the start. the bar was set so high that UC3 just was never gonna be able to get there and you can see that it was attempted at several times. What hurt UC3 the most to me, is the dull andather boring storyline and even dulle dialogue, s it was really hard to eve n feel like youwere playing Uncharte. It still had some good qualities but they are mostly overlooked due the MANY disappointments. So yeah I agree, my fave list I UC2 is my favorite, 2. UC1 && lastly 3-UC3!!

Avatar image for theninjaguydon

@FastRobby: while I enjoyed it overall, they screwed with the shooting mechanics and player movement too much making it the worst of the lot. Still a good game but 2 was the best in my opinion.

Avatar image for nickpeck36

@FastRobby: Same here. All of the games follow the same formula and 3 felt really tired. It was good, but wasn't as good as the first two imo.

Avatar image for ChiefFreeman

@nickpeck36: I agree. I'm not enjoying 3 much. Too many puzzles.

Avatar image for davillain-

Congratulations Sony on your Uncharted and can't wait to grab my hands on the remastered trilogy.

Avatar image for RicanV

Quality franchise. Well deserved.
