Uncharted Sales Reach Incredible New Heights, Hitting 41.7 Million Units

Up and up.

The Uncharted series has reached a new sales milestone. During Uncharted's 10th Anniversary panel at PSX this weekend, Naughty Dog announced that franchise sales now stand at 41.7 million units. According to PushSquare, which reported the figure, this covers sales of every game in the series, along with the The Nathan Drake Collection.

Franchise sales stood at 28 million in May 2016, PlayStation boss Shawn Layden told FoxBusiness, so that means Sony sold almost 14 million more Uncharted games in the 18 months since then. That is pretty remarkable.

Presumably the new Uncharted series sales figure also covers copies sold in bundles, which would inflate the figure higher than it would normally be. But it is still an impressive achievement. Clearly, there is a business opportunity for Sony to continue the Uncharted series even though series star Nathan Drake's story is finished. Series creator Naughty Dog has said it doesn't plan to make another entry, but the franchise could live on at another studio if the fit is right.

All entries in the core Uncharted series to date have been developed by Naughty Dog. PlayStation Vita games Golden Abyss and Fight for Fortune were made by Sony Bend, while The Nathan Drake Collection was developed by Bluepoint Games. It remains to be seen which studio might take over for Naughty Dog.

In other news, an Uncharted movie is on the way. Stranger Things and Night at the Museum director Shawn Levy is attached to direct, with Spider-Man actor Tom Holland playing a young Nathan Drake.
