Uncharted Movie Director On What Makes The Game Great For A Film

"It's cinematic because it's not only kind of wildly visual but it's really rooted in character and a very specific tone and a sense of fun."

The Uncharted movie is finally being made. Maybe. It has a script and a new director in Shawn Levy, who directed Night at the Museum, Real Steel, and episodes of Stranger Things.

In an interview with Collider, Levy shared some more details about how he became attached to the long-in-development project and why he thinks the movie is going to be a hit.

"I've been interested in this project for years. It's as cinematic a game as we've had maybe ever, certainly of late," he said. "And it's cinematic because it's not only kind of wildly visual but it's really rooted in character and a very specific tone and a sense of fun. Like, when is the last great, fun, f**king action, dynamic, treasure-hunting movie?

"So I've been interested in it and I've been quietly letting people know I'm interested in it. But other people have been involved; I've been busy. A moment finally appeared quite recently where I was like [raises hand], 'Me. Okay? Me.' And Sony and producers were like, 'Yeah, that makes perfect sense.'"

The movie was previously going to be directed by The Fighter's David O. Russell, before he dropped out. Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief) and Neil Burger (Limitless) were also attached to direct at different periods of time. Superbad writers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were reportedly courted to write a script years ago.

According to the latest report, Sony wants to "fast-track" the Uncharted movie, though a release date has not been announced.

The movie was first announced way back in 2009, only for it to repeatedly fall apart. Actors mentioned as possibilities for leading roles included Mark Wahlberg, Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Amy Adams, and Scarlett Johansson. Chris Pratt is among those to pass on the role of Nathan Drake. We're still waiting for official casting announcements.

Can't say I like anything Levy has done in the past and hopefully that cast has been mothballed. I love DeNiro and Pesci, but not in this setting.

So tired of Walberg, he could never pull off Nathan Drake's style of levity in face of danger.

Uncharted is a Robert Zemeckis kinda film IMO.

i dont believe in the "video-games into movie curse" , it's all about writing a good SCRIPT...and treating the movie as a video-game counter part, and not a new "approach" , because all blockbuster videogames are meant to be interractive movies within games, they have all the source materials in there, but no, they always want to do something "different"..

If i was in sony's film Division, i would make neil druckmann and steve write the SCRIPT fotr the movie, and make them attached to the movie direction team....and i will force the sony movie division to work in real cooperation with naughty Dogs, cause when you see how the games are very successful in bringing the characters in life, its all thanks to the great Writers/designers naughty dog have...why not use them for the same thing to bringing them in their best shapes into the movie adapations ??..

you know the only way you can make a character great, is by writing a good script, and a good background, scenes etc...and its the same foruma either when you write a book, a movie, or a video game...

that's exactly why this movie will fail, because you could just play all the uncharted games instead... there's no point of a movie... you can make a movie of a book because you can bring the characters to life with actors, in videogame the characters are given life with models and graphics, there's absolutely no need to have a movie about this with the same plot... yea of course money...

I'm kind of tired of seeing Scarlett Johansson tbh.

There are other actresses out there right? Hollywood could really use some new faces.

I think Chris Pratt could have pulled Nathan Drake off. No you neckbeard perverts, not what I meant, I meant that he could have portrayed Drake's character well.

It's already a step ahead of a film so basically you just take a step backward and you have an uncharted movie.

It's so stupid they're making a movie for Uncharted.

@cornbredx: Eh, it's not so stupid. What IS stupid is that they're not animating it, not using the original voice actors, and not trusting their core development team to put together a great story for a movie, which we know they can do (Uncharted 4's main problem was the pacing wasn't right for an action game. Fine for a movie though).

The game tries to simulate a movie more than being a game, so that's would work if it was an actual movie. Though having a movie length story is the issue. A 3 hour movie is fine, but rushing the film or making the film feel like it's rushing is an issue.

@Veemon_X: It was at least generic action movie tier which is already better than a lot of vidya movies.

@Veemon_X: The Assassins creed movie was OK at best. Just because it didn't blow everyones minds doesn't mean it's crap. Although the last ten minutes of the film was garbage. I'd say the AC movie is a solid 6.5-7/10

@haze0986: Because it was hyped as something to break the mold. But when it came out it was just average. like a 6/10. Just average. I hear many complaining there wasn't enough time in the past though, I didn't care about the past much so maybe that's why.

@biggamerdude: you are in the minority on this one....the movie bombed in the box office and didn't do so well in home release, even Rockstar disowned the movie, pretty sure even Remedy was like F that movie....

NO, it's a bad movie.....through and through......
