Uncharted Movie Adds Bad Boys 3 Director to Write Script

Bad Boys 3 director Joe Carnahan would love to direct an Uncharted movie, but he's only on to write the script.

The Uncharted movie has had many names attached to it, including Mark Wahlberg and American Hustledirector David O. Russell. Now, Variety reports that the Uncharted movie has a new script writer in Bad Boys 3 director Joe Carnahan.

Carnahan has produced and directed many films, including Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, and The Grey. He's also worked on television shows such as The Blacklist and State of Affairs. Bad Boys 3 is his next project, though he says he'd love to direct an Uncharted movie as well.

"In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script," he said. "Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with. Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it."

The Uncharted movie doesn't currently have any actors on board. It does, however, have producers in Charles Roven, Avi Arad, and Alex Gartner, in addition to Sony creative exec Jonathan Kadin's supervision.

In 2015, Nathan Drake voice actor Nolan North said that fans don't want a movie, "no matter who's the star of it."

Despite what fans may want, the Uncharted movie has had some difficulty getting off the ground. The production has seen many different castings and directors. Additionally, filming was supposed to start in 2015, though that didn't happen. Details from the film were revealed as part of last year's Sony email leak.

Wow. This is the least reassuring thing posted about this movie. Please, just let it die. At this point you'd be better served to just do a CG motion-capture production so you can get the game's actors to play the parts instead of some Hollywood rendition of a beloved franchise. As for the writing, after reading the leaked script from 2 years ago, I have no hope that anyone but Naughty Dog truly grasp what makes Uncharted great.

Please just let it die.

Well I hope the movie turns out great and doesn't follow the trend of bad movies based on Video games cycle.

The Uncharted series already is the movie experience people would want to see. I don't really see the point of a live action port. Or well, beyond the second thing Mr. Carnahan mentions.

Carnahan is decent at things, but if Shane Black doesn't feel like getting involved then neither do I.
Feel that way about most movies though to be honest.

Uncharted games are already movies. They just 10 hour long movies that you control the 7.5 hours of gun fights.

A 2.5 hour long uncharted movie would be fine if done well. I'm a fan as well. I love just playing uncharted online survival modes ;). Story part is fine once or 2x through.

Sony has proven they're more of a "throw some big names together and hope it cashes in" type filmmaker, so I have no confidence in this movie.

@Barighm: Exactly. I'd be much more convinced if they'd use same talents who did stories for Uncharted games. People who know and hold franchise dear and close to their hearts. Who really understand characters.

Same as with super-heroes... MCU movies, to my knowledge, had actual Marvel Comics writers doing stories, or at least consulting on stories. They all came up at least OK if not great, imho. I believe Sony went for Hollywood celeb screenwriters for Spider-Man movies, and it didn't work as good as it could. Dumb Gwen Stacy blonde in Spider-Man 3, really? Green Goblin without Norman Osborn in Amazing Spider-Man 2... like, really REALLY? No love for villains - cramming Sandman and Venom in one flick... and all the other changes for the sake of change. Like these celeb writers always want to make it their own, reinvent it... but with characters with such rich history, like FF, Silver Surfer, Spidey... enforced reinvention just looks unconvincing, fake.

So this guy... he will be directing movie from franchise that was never strong on story, such as Bad Boys were. What has he done before? Any writing or, at least, directing worth mentioning?

I didn't know there was a Bad Boys 3. Weird.

(There wasn't. The article is poorly written. It's one of the next movies this director is making. Click bait implies it's a movie that already exists so you'll click on it to correct their bad writing. That's how Gamespot works now.)

@Byshop: It's either filming now or in pre-production for a shoot later this year. Sony has it scheduled for June 2017.

@zmanbarzel: Phew, that was close. For a moment I thought I had somehow missed this awful, awful sequel.

@mickpunx: The first two weren't exactly cinematic masterpieces, but you're right. I'm sure the third time's a charm and this will be the new Citizen Kane...
