Uncharted: Don't Expect Naughty Dog To Make Another Entry, Though A Different Studio Could

"I would say that Naughty Dog doing an Uncharted after [The Lost Legacy] is unlikely."

Naughty Dog has made no secret about how it plans to move on from the Uncharted series after this year's standalone game, The Lost Legacy. Now, co-president Evan Wells has doubled down on that stance, telling Game Informer that he does not foresee Naughty Dog ever making another entry in the series, though this is not written in stone.

"I would say that Naughty Dog doing an Uncharted after this is unlikely," he explained. "I would never say never, but we've got The Last of Us Part II on our plates and there's so much other stuff that [we want to explore]. It'd be hard. If we magically had that two-team, three-team studio, sure--it'd be great to keep doing it. We really love the franchise, but the studio has limited resources and lots of other ideas. I'd say the likelihood is low."

Now Playing: GS News Update: Don't Expect Naughty Dog To Make Uncharted 5

A scene from Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
A scene from Uncharted: The Lost Legacy

The Uncharted series, which debuted in 2007 and has spanned four mainline games, sold more than 20 million copies before Uncharted 4's release last year. That game, the final one to feature Nathan Drake, sold close to 9 million units by Sony's latest count, so there definitely appears to be a business opportunity for more games in the series. The franchise is owned by Sony, so it's possible the company could put a different studio to work on a fifth mainline Uncharted game.

It wouldn't be the first time the creator of a high-profile series moved on to a different franchise with the original property continuing at a different team.

In April last year, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann said he'd be happy for another studio to take over, but only if they were able to nail the "essence" of Uncharted.

Outside studios have already worked on the Uncharted series. The Uncharted PlayStation Vita spinoff, Golden Abyss, was developed by Sony Bend, while Bluepoint Games worked on Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection.

Naughty Dog's The Last of Us II was announced in December 2016 and does not yet have a release date. As for Wells' comment on the "so much stuff" that Naughty Dog wants to explore, this could be a reference to new IP.

Outside of games, movies based on Uncharted and The Last of Us are in the works.

Good way to end the series. Sony might be looking into another studio as uncharted 4 sales is bigger than any other 1st party games on home console but as far as naughty dog is concerned, its finished.

I'm glad they're not making another Uncharted. Let the franchise be remembered as something great and not abused

Yet another reason why Naughty dog is so respected in this industry by their peers and gamers alike.

There is something to be said about a developer realizing that it would be in their best interest as well as the world and characters that they have created to just “move on”.

I think we have all seen or can at least relate in some way to this sentiment as the alternative doesn’t usually end up well. It’s not uncommon for developers who go this route (continuing with a franchise when it was clear it was over.) to make sub-par installments at least in relation to the titles that generated all of its original success.

Personally speaking I think Uncharted 4 ended on a high note and the characters and world that Naughty dog helped create and brought into our homes found meaning and conclusion in that last installment.

The last thing I think any of us want to see is a franchise that for whatever reason has clearly overstayed its welcome. Games that started off great or with a significant amount of fanfare/critical acclaim like the Assassins creeds franchise have now reached this point, one where even the fans can tell the next installment is just another way for the developer to cash in on a franchise that already has a substantial and sizable fan-base.

I wish more developers were aware of things like this the way Naughty dog apparently is and instead of milking a franchise dry like so many others do I think a better approach and redistribution of resources into new and original games would better serve not only the interest of the developers but of gamers in the end.

Uncharted is just Tomb Raider with a male lead.

@DeviantCode: And Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is just Pac-Man with a more open world.

@RyuCheese: Are you really trying to suggest Tomb Raider and Uncharted are as different as Zelda and Pac-Man? That's just silly little kid talk.

@louixiii: No salt, just fact. I enjoyed both games. Would you feel better if I said, "Tomb Raider is just Uncharted with a female lead"? They're fun, but they're basically the same game.

@DeviantCode: They both have different feels and the original TR didn't have as much platforming as Uncharted does and the controls were way different so no...they're not the same game.

@DeviantCode: That's my line. If you can't see the differences between these 2 titles then you're definitely not the brightest bulb in the pack xD

This poses many questions. Its another studio working on an uncharted game, not the first time they mention this?

Maybe they should look to MS and Halo and gears IP and how well they have done under new leadership.

Golden abyss was great on the Vita, story was poor though.

What will they do after Lou2? A new IP?

No, no, no, no. Please do not let another Uncharted entry happen. Naughty Dog or not. The series ended perfectly with 4.

I'm perfectly okay with them just letting the series end on the note it did (though I wouldn't be against seeing another studio get the shot to do a spin off series

*spoilers*

maybe staring Nate and Elena's daughter or something like that).

@phoenix1289: I would play that game in a second.

Though....hmm.....the daughter of a rich treasure hunter who has to find her own way to make a name for herself out of the shadow of her family name....it's almost like I've played that game before.....hmm.....

Be hard to make a sequel to Uncharted 4 with how the game ended. Unless it's a prequel or Crystal Skull type deal, where Nathan Drake says things like, I'm too old for this sh*t. No one wants to see that. Besides, Naughty Dog really outdid themselves with the series and gave us some great games to cherish. I'm glad they're exploring new things.

I think everyone knows this by now that ND is done with Uncharted series and so with that, I rather ND just focus on The Last of Us as there new Uncharted series.
