Uncharted Becomes 4th Video Game Movie To Reach $400 Million Worldwide

The weekend's box office has seen Sony's Uncharted film hit $400.7 million worldwide, according to Deadline. Regionally, that total breaks down as $147.6 million for domestic take, and $253.1 internationally.

After so many delays and finally coming out this February, Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group chairman and CEO Tom Rothman quickly declared on a company-wide email (via Slashfilm), "Uncharted is a new hit movie franchise for the company. This marks a great victory for every single division of the company, as the film was our first major production entirely shut down by the advent of COVID, yet we persevered to complete a picture the audience loves and marketed and distributed it with strategic verve worldwide, despite the pandemic."

This also likely bodes well for a sequel, as director Ruben Flesicher also mentioned earlier this year that, yes, the movie leaves the door open for one--but he also wants Uncharted 4's car chase in the potential follow-up film, which he called "the greatest car chase ever filmed in any film or anything… that car chase is unparalleled." Fleischer also noted that a sequel happening was entirely dependent on how the first film performs financially.

Sony is keen to make more movies, recently establishing a division called PlayStation Productions that will handle all adaptations of its games for film and TV. In April, Sony locked in writer Takashi Doscher (Only, Hear Us) to write the film adaptation of the 2020 Sony video game Ghost of Tsushima.
