While Indiana Jones had his first gaming adventure in half a decade earlier this year, the treasure-hunting, wisecracking adventurer niche did not go unfilled in the meantime. Naughty Dog hit that mark solidly with its PlayStation 3 debut last year, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. And with yesterday's downloadable update for that game, Uncharted players finally have the chance to earn trophies worthy of anything Dr. Jones could find on an archeological dig.

Released to North American and European gamers, the patch adds 47 bronze, silver, and gold trophies to the game. There is also a 48th platinum trophy--the first of its kind on the PS3--awarded to hardy souls who collect the other 47.

The trophies may be familiar to Uncharted veterans, as they were originally incorporated into the game as medals. Unlike Burnout Paradise, the patch won't retroactively award trophies, so those who have already completed the game will have to restart it.

"This was done so that everyone receives their Trophies fairly and can't take advantage of the game saves we've seen floating around," said Naughty Dog marketing manager Arne Meyer on Sony's PlayStation Blog. "That means you will have to start a brand new game--without any medals or rewards unlocked--and play through Uncharted to get trophies."
