Uncharted 4 Multiplayer: Free DLC, Launch Modes, and More Announced

Uncharted 4 comes out next week, and that's just the beginning.

Naughty Dog today shared lots of new details regarding Uncharted 4's multiplayer mode. Perhaps the biggest piece of news, shared by game designer Robert Cogburn on the PlayStation Blog, is that all future DLC maps and modes will be free for all players. The game will have microtransactions, and will include things like "vanity and gameplay items," but Cogburn stressed that these can all be earned through gameplay.

The benefit of free multiplayer DLC, Cogburn said, is the Uncharted 4 multiplayer community "won't be fragmented." He went on to say that this represents an "entirely new direction" for Naughty Dog (past Uncharted games charged you for DLC maps), but it's not a new idea in games.

One recent high-profile example is Halo 5: Guardians, which offers its DLC maps and modes for free. Gears of War 4 also has plans for free DLC.

For its part, Cogburn said of the business model, "We are confident it will have a hugely positive impact and keep the Uncharted 4 multiplayer community thriving."

Some of Uncharted 4's post-launch multiplayer DLC will include things like the aforementioned maps and modes, as well as weapons, vanity items, and boosters, among other things. Players can unlock DLC by spending Relics, which you receive for completing challenges or winning matches. You then spend these Relics on DLC chests, of which there are two options: Vanity and Gameplay. The chests include randomized content, so there is no guarantee you'll get what you want. However, chests will never give the same reward twice, so you're encouraged to keep playing until you do.

You can also spend real money on Uncharted Points to unlock these items right away. Naughty Dog did not share any specific pricing details for the game's currency system.

Naughty Dog also shared a "multiplayer roadmap" for Uncharted 4 that details the content coming to the game after its release. As you can see, Naughty Dog plans to deliver quite a lot of free content from summer through spring 2017. One particularly noteworthy new addition is co-op, which comes out this fall. Take a look at the image below to learn more.

People who buy the Uncharted 4 "Triple Pack" ($25) will receive the previously announced Uncharted 4 single-player expansion (the first ever for Uncharted), as well as two multiplayer packs. These come with a range of items, including weapons and vanity wares. Descriptions for the packs are below, but specifics are being saved for a later date, it seems.

MP Pack #1

  • Long Gun
  • Booster
  • Skin
  • Hat
  • Taunt

MP Pack #2

  • Pistol
  • Booster
  • Mystical
  • Hat
  • Taunt

Finally, Naughty Dog shared a list of Uncharted 4 multiplayer modes that will be available at launch. You can see the names of these playlists below, while a full breakdown of each is available on the PlayStation Blog.

  • Ranked
  • Command
  • Team Deathmatch
  • Plunder
  • Warmup Playlist
  • Trials

After years of development and multiple delays, Uncharted 4 is now due to arrive on May 10 exclusively for PlayStation 4.

The multiplayer is fun, fast and really addictive. And look at all the free stuff. The micro transactions are for crazy fans that don't have much time to play the MP. While the campaign is what I am most excited for, the MP is definitely worth playing.

Selling vanity items is all good, but making microtransactions for gameplay items kind of neutralizes the free DLC.

Glad they are giving us the maps for free including other free stuff. Vanity items are completely optional so that means I don't HAVE to buy them. Great way of keeping players engaged.

Uncharted 1 and 2 were great, I never touched 3. Golden Abyss was impressive even though it wasn't an amazing game. Uncharted WAS going to be something to make me consider getting a PS4 but with all these micro-transactions I'm quickly realizing that wont happen. This is kind of a microcosm of gaming as a whole for me anymore...

@NoahRoalson: Jesus Christ. You can't play a potentially amazing game because of micro transactions? What's wrong with your brain?

@NoahRoalson: missing out on a good game due to something completely optional? Though I wouldn't buy a system for one game only anyway.

I hope all this extra stuff doesn't ruin the game. I really enjoyed the multiplayer beta.

@Supabul: The NDC made sense though. There was no way those games could become BC on the PS4, and many PS4 adopters were former 360 gamers who completely missed that generation. The same wasn't true for Halo, which was actually a Halo 2 remaster that got out of control and was broken because of it. And they still got BC.

@senorbusyman: Uncharted 2 is probably the best PS3 game in my opinion.

Good for them. Despite its popularity, it isn't always easy finding mp games for uncharted games, especially for paid dlc maps.

And they should provide the single player dlc separate from the mp, why should anyone pay $25 for a mp map they might never use?

So it will be like gta v online and those stupid shark cards, watch them nurf weapons and make grinding for xp and currency a priority to keep their income going, the trophies for mp in uncharted 4 don't help, i don't want nothing to do with online mp.

Curious what the co-op features will be in Autumn 2016. Couldn't care about the rest, buying the game for the epic single player, not MP.

It's as if they expect to have a lot of people playing the multiplayer. Barely anyone cares for the multiplayer mode as it's generic. However, possible story DLC will really piss fans off if it's not free.

@cboye18: i don't think they care about how much people play their mp, all they care about is how much money they make thru the microtransactions, this is why their special and collection editions were mp dlc focused.

I see that Naughtydog is following behind 343 Industries foot steps. Smart minds will appreciate the competition rather than hating it.

@kentray1985: Thankfully, it's the single mode is post-launch DLC against pretty much everything else for that washed-up FPS. Fingers crossed the SP won't be a short, underwhelming mess too.

@sladakrobot: Until those things that can be earned through playing the game take absurd amounts of luck/time to get... The problem is that having MT encourages developers to push these things further away from the player to coerce them into buying them.
