Uncharted 4, Last of Us Dev Possibly Teases New Story

Does everything happen for a reason? Or is life random? That could be the theme of something new from Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann.

With no new games announced after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, fans might be wondering what Naughty Dog will make next. Now, director Neil Druckmann has teased some information about a project he's thinking about, and it sounds quite interesting.

Druckmann recently spoke to The Frame about his creative process. There are some big unknowns here, however, as we don't know if the new story he's thinking about is for a new game, Uncharted 4's franchise-first single-player add-on, or something else entirely like maybe a new book; Druckmann wrote the 2010 graphic novel A Second Chance at Sarah.

Whatever the case, Druckmann is obviously an accomplished writer and director, so it's always interesting to hear what he's thinking about next.

After the interviewer said a theme he's noticed in Druckmann's past work is the idea of going back to see if you can revisit the past and change the present; or going back in time to understand why a character feels the way they do about something.

"You've noticed a pattern that I haven't," Druckmann said. "But that's interesting and it's interesting in that I think about the story I'm working on right now; [that theme is] definitely there. I think a lot of times because I think about myself or other human beings and what are the events that have shaped us? What are kind of the choices that have defined who we are and have led us to this place?

"I think it's also tied to human nature or human choice versus destiny. Having grown up not in a very religious home, but where religion was a big part of it, and this concept that everything happens for a reason," he added. "Even when horrible things happen, like in our family or to friends, you would hear this statement: 'everything happens for a reason.'

Druckmann continued: "I'm just wrestling with that concept; is that true? Or is it just totally random. And never quite coming to a good answer and maybe that's why I just keep exploring those concepts."

His entire chat with The Frame is incredibly fascinating. Go read/listen to it here.

Naughty Dog continues to support Uncharted 4 with new multiplayer content and is also working on the franchise's first single-player add-on. Beyond those, however, the developer has no announced games. The studio has talked about the possibility of The Last of Us 2, while there has also been chatter of Naughty Dog making a completely new game.

Uncharted 4, which launched in May, is the last game in the series that Naughty Dog plans to make (though there could be an Uncharted 5 with a different studio).
